Translation of `Salat`

Please note that in all cases, the translation of Salat in chapter 9 and other verses which speak more of a commitment/obligation will be translated accordingly to reflect their difference from the Salat of the believers that involves specific steps and times.

I don't think we should leave any word in Arabic. Translate all of them, even the names. I voted for "bond."

But then again, maybe it's just one of those words that can't be translated into english.
It's too late to take my vote back, but here's my suggestion

Leave "jinn" and "salat" as they are in the Quran, but at the end give an explanation of why the word wasn't translated and what it CAN mean. I think that'll work until we can come up with a good term to convey the meaning of salat and jinn. what'd ya think?

Somehow I chose "commitment" when I wanted to choose "bond" (I guess I was half-asleep). ;D

I just read 2014 about how "Salat" is for The God's remembrance. Can we say that "Salat" is the "remembrance process/method" then? If I succeeded in reaching this state of "remembrance", then I think that "bond", "commitment", "link", and "contact" are all covered as well. Just a thought D

i am addressing this message to not only all the concerned members of this forum but specifically LAYTH.

layth, is chapter 9 the only part of the scripture where salat is best translated as bond? you have to take note to the fact that chapter 9 is a surah without a bismillah.

in fact the surah itself starts out like this

"This is a revocation from God and His messenger to those with whom you have made a treaty from among those who have set up partners"

the "no bismillah" makes this surah quite unique from all other chapters in the scripture! brother, would you kindly show me what WAKAS was talking about? why would "contact-method" be inappropriate under that circumstance in chapter 9? does"salat/bond/contact-method" retain the same meaning throughout the scripture? if not, does it have similar meanings in one chapter and a different meaning in other chapters?

let's just say, we leave it as "the bond"? how will the new meaning of the scripture be effected from the previous understanding? will the "bond" be the same as "contact-method"?

This chapter creates a problem as Salat is understood throughout the Scripture as a vehicle used especially by Mumins to avoid wrongdoings...By linking it with mushrikeen, and then using it as a measure of their repentance...You can see the problem.

Actually the same problem is still there, but using bond lessens the issue as bond can be more generically understood.

An alternative to the meaning of Salat that I recall discussing a long time back was the word law/instruction/path (or an off-shoot of these words) making upholding Salat to mean upholding the path

I see that Salat getting the most vote....!! But my opinion would be ...if its a translation than it should be 100% translation.....Now how that could be done can me another issue...

Perhaps it is thinking of it as a special word has caused the problems? Perhaps it should be considered "more generically"? Just a thought. What the "bond" refers to, is clearly discussed in the context of chapter 9.
