hi guys, i guess am giving my intro quite late considering i have joined the group and have been participating in the forums since october 7.
well, i accidentally came across this site during one of my discussions at beliefnet on quran, and i felt quite glad, i did. coz for years, i knew there were things misunderstood, and mis interpreted among the muslim world, too many things that didnt make sense..so, i used to refer to Quran whenever i wanted to clarify something. i just didnt agree and feel right about the traditions mixed up with islam. and yeah, i come from a sunni background in india.
so, when i came across this site, it all made sense. it felt good to know that there were people who believe in God,who didnt fear to think or understand stuff they didnt understand and people were willing to discuss and search for the truth , instead of sticking to blind beliefs. coz a couple of times, when i had discussions with my family, cousins and other sunni members, they would end up concluding that 'this is how it is & we should'nt question it' or they would end up showing me hadith to prove any of their points. discussions was not considered right. following was considered right, instead. and this mere fact was so contradictory to what Allah says in Quran.
And yeah, they follow the hadith and recite the Quran( concentrating on the pronounciations, the tone etc and not understanding it). infact, thats what all of us are taught very early in our lives. we are all taught to read arabic.. so that we can recite Quran. i am one of them. i can read arabic and cant understand a word of it.
i didnt feel right about all of it and then started reading the translations in english. thats when i realised, we are doing it all wrong.To sum up, Here are my beliefs
i beleive in Quran as a message from God.
i dont disregard Hadith. i consider it as history than anything else.
and as for the rules and regulations in it most of it seems to be cooked up to suit religious leaders or mixed up with traditional practices. so, i choose to question them. i dont mind following things i see sense in, be it from the Hadith or from anywhere else.
but no blind beliefs or traditions in the name of islam for me.well, thats my story.

I was also taught to read Arabic but not understand it. I am learning now though, and I recommend 'Arabic through the Quran' by Alan Jones (only ?12). Also, use the tools at www.studyquran.org
There is quite a few of us from the UK on this board, and I'm always happy to see one more.

and M_Mehdi, to begin with, i started on with the yusuf ali translation which one gets in saudi. now, i read a considerable lot than i did.
and wakas, thanks for the site. shall check that out. its funny, aint it, when one can read and write but cant understand? P

LOL...Yeah, I went to a "muslim" school and we were taught the same way.....So I could read and write arabic but couldn't comprehend it if my life depended on it! Does that really make much sense??? Then again my teacher couldn't understand a lick of Arabic, but I guess it would have been too much to ask of my former school to hire a teacher who spoke Arabic and ACTUALLY knew what he was saying! shock .......lol.....Bermuda "muslims" are a riot!....Oh and Welcome to the forum.....though you were a member before me...oh well..lol )

yeah, u r right, ur name does have a J-Lo feel to itthanks for the welcome.
hope u have a good journey called life.dunno about bermuda muslims, but arabic is spoken in only a few countries. so, i guess the rest of the world goes on reciting Quran in arabic considering the recital holy. i rememeber we were/are told that if we recite some particular sura some no. of times(say 100 etc), we would gain direct access to heaven or we get 500 steps closer towards heaven etc.
now, does that make any sense?
