Male and female conduct outside of marriage

I was just wondering whether or not anyone had any ideas as to how men and women are to behave towards each other outside of marriage, according to the Quranic basis.
Would male and female friendship be allowed? One peice of evidence to support this is the story from the Quran of Soloman and the Queen of Sheba.
As per Quranic principles, in a Quran-only state, male and female people would be equal and so I think under the Quran, contrary to common sunni thinking, free mixing would be allowed to an extent, . The main reason hadiths advocate segregation is to mainly keep women out of public society; we know this is wrong according to the Quran but does God advice us on the matter further?
