66:3 - Allah discloses a matter to the Prophet, but it is not in the Qur'an?

And when the prophet disclosed a matter in confidence to some of his wives, then one of them spread it, and God revealed it to him, he recognized part of it and denied part. So when he informed her, she said "Who informed you of this?" He said "I was informed by the Knowledgeable, the Expert."
I cannot find anywhere in the Qur'an where the Prophet is informed about His wives. I am taking it now that, Allah may have communicated to the Prophet in some other way/s. However they are not a part of the Recital (The Qur'an), and therefore not part of the Guidance. It still does not give hadith books any status along the Qur'an.
Any other opinions?

Yes this was for the Prophet regarding his wives. The Prophet was very lucky that Allah was communicating with Him directly (mainly via the Archangel Gabriel). The Sahabas were also lucky to have the Prophet among them. If you check the Medinah Charter, it says that Allah endorses it, and this could not happen if Allah was not communicating to the Prophet other matters besides The Quran.
For our guidance though, The Quran is enough because it says so.
Hadith gatherers have tried to get information about the life of the Prophet to capture some of these communications between Allah and the Prophet.
For me, this is why I do not rule out the Hadith completely as a source of information, but I do not take the hadith as being legally or morally binding.
As for the matter in the ayat, there is a hadith that reveals that the Prophet was fond of Honey, that some of his wives were jealous of one in particular who brought him honey, and so they banded together making up a story that honey did not smell very well on him, and since the Prophet was very clean, and also considerate to his wives, he decided to stop using honey. This is one part of the story which the Prophet decided to hide. So Allah advised him of what happened, telling him that his wives have no right to make unlawful to him what Allah made lawful. (I might have distorted the story as this is off the top of my head).
