        Salam ALL

Amatullah I'm not very good at translating Quran or explaining it but your posted verse says" and tell the believing women to subdue their eyes and maintain their chastity. They shall not reveal any parts of the bodies, except that which is necessary." I don't know about anybody else but i maintain my chastity on a daily basis without having to lie to anybody.
I see girls go to school and work, who throw off their hijabs as soon as they get far away from home and to add insult to injury they slap on a ton of makeup and lots of jewellry (not that there is anything wrong with makeup because i wear it).
now the sentence"they shall not reveal any parts of their bodies, except that which is necessary". I feel most parts of my body are necessary for me to run my daily life and to express myself, i mean read the story LoteTree told , don't you think that her mouth was necessary to her and she was struggling to use that too.
i wear sensible clothes(jeans and a long top/long skirt and long top etc) but i won't wear anything that can put me in danger of doing injury to myself.
I could never live inside a hijab.

            Assalaamu alaikum Tahira

I know there are alot of girls who cover their hair with veil, but still were sexy clothes, use alot of make-up and have bad behaviour. I guess it has its reasons but i really dont think its good. But theres a difference between covering hair and covering also ur face. I know people with niqab and its not easy to do anything with it, not eating and even not breathing - which is neccesary to do. But what do u have to do wiyh ur hair when u r with ur non-mahrams? Is it really nessecary to show the hair?

            Salaam!

I don't think its fair to say that if men find a woman's dress too provocative, that they should merely lower their gaze. I don't think its possible for a man to lower his gaze when a woman walks by in provocative clothes. Nothing to do with religion, just the male biological sexual response. Hormones flood his body that he has no control over. In some cases these hormones can make him do things that he normally would not do hence the unbelievably high sexual assaults in western countries esp. north america (U.S. = sexual assult every 6 minutes, actual rape reported almost every 5 mins, these are last years stats, i dont know for 2005)

Its control over media/education that enables women in western countries to continue to feel safe even though they live in a "rape hotbed" so to say (sorry i couldnt think of another way to describe it).

There is a liquid known as spanish fly (just using this as an example). Its not a magic liquid, it simply creates an irritation in a woman's genitals to such a degree (and in such a way) that on almost 85% of women, they will get up and want to sleep with the first guy they see, whether they want to or not, whether they like him or not.

Now, if a man used this, it would be a crime. No one here will dispute that. Causing a woman to go sexually insane, and sleep with someone she would normally not sleep with. This is an aspect of sexual assult.

Now, when a man sees a woman's shape, no matter what culture (its not as much the breasts as it is something else, and all cultures in the world keep this area covered), he will get excited. It will flood him with hormones. His own natural "spanish fly." For the safety of women, and the sanity of a society, i think that this "look but don't touch" should be discouraged in the west. We can argue all day about different cultures where women wear different things and get away with it, but these are vain arguments for the simple fact that we are not looking to mimic those societies. We are looking to create a society that has its own system of right and wrong. Now the Quran says to wear modest clothes. Thats well and good. But understand modest from this perspective, that a man will get excited by the simple shape of a womans body.

ANd hijab? Not that i am completly for Hijab, but its a scientific fact that 85-90% of a woman's pheromones are released from the hair on her head, and pheromones, even before a man sees a woman, will help to determine how excited he will become (older women release less pheromones). It's not that I personally would like to see women cover up, it's just that they should take responsibility for some of what happens. ANd maybe they are not completely to blame, television and other media flash images of women all over the place to sell products. It is enough to get most men excited. Obviously since naturally, it is a woman who attracts the man (biologically speaking) she has a built in insecurity to always be attractive. This makes sure that men stay attracted. Corporations capitalize on this insecurity to sell even more provocative clothes. ANd to keep selling them every year. Their #1 consumer market? Women ages 15-45.

Men and women might be equal under the law. This is the law of God, and no one will dispute this, but they are not equal otherwise. I'm not saying one is better than the other. Women could be better than men, what I'm saying is that there is a significant difference between men and women, they are not the same thing as is emphasized in the west. This identicality is a danger and it might work, just as other systems might work, but its not what we as followers of the Quran want to achieve. I have noticed that more than the westerners themselves, muslims living in the west jump to the west's defense. Yes, we all have a disdain for traditionalist culture in the east that sometimes hinders personal growth. But that doesn't mean that we replace our system completely with a foreigner's system that does not serve our purpose.

                Wa alaikum asalam Amatullah

If hair wasn't necassary why did Allah create it? If we are not meant to be seen why do we have individual faces? If we are all the same why aren't we equal? If men get impulses looking at women don't women get impulses looking at men? These are just a few of the questions i can never find answers to. Why do we have to wear hijabs because they(men) have a weakness.
Allah created us so perfectly , so beautifuly and then tells us to cover it all up. It doesn't make sense (to me).
My friend Anne asked me a question a couple of months ago, she told me she has a friend who works with her, her friend wears full hijab but gets harrased by a muslim collegue all the time. she asked me "isn't her hijab supposed to protect her from these kind of men"? If the hijab can't protect her from sexual predators what else can? All i could say to Anne was"there will always be monsters out there" and she replied " i don't think her hijab is going to protect her from them either".

Are you telling me that women don't get excited at the sight of a man's body? Some women go wild wink

It will flood him with hormones. His own natural "spanish fly." For the safety of women, and the sanity of a society, i think that this "look but don't touch" should be discouraged in the west.

Men and Women can equally look and don't touch!

Sanity of a society is at stake because men get excited over women's shape? -)

Thats well and good. But understand modest from this perspective, that a man will get excited by the simple shape of a womans body.

                    And women don't?
Men and women can be equal in that respect!!!

ANd hijab? Not that i am completly for Hijab, but its a scientific fact that 85-90% of a woman's pheromones are released from the hair on her head, and pheromones, even before a man sees a woman, will help to determine how excited he will become (older women release less pheromones).

Oh yeah and men don't release pheromones?
Sweaty men can send some women mad!!! -)

It's not that I personally would like to see women cover up, it's just that they should take responsibility for some of what happens.

We should all be responsible. A man getting excited over a womens body does not give him the right to imprison her in a Arabian style Hijab. Men and women should be educated to deal with their sexaulity and not hide it or supress it. Nor should any man has the right to supress a women's sexuality.

ANd maybe they are not completely to blame, television and other media flash images of women all over the place to sell products. It is enough to get most men excited.

Women are not to blame! Why should they be? Why should they be ashamed of their sexuality? We need to educate men and women to be responsible adults. And not use "most men get excited" excuse to imprison women in a black cloak!

                    We all have our insecurities
(Men have insecurity about the size of their third leg wink )
(but its fair to say I don't have that insecurity -))

But no man should use the above as excuse to put women in a Hijab!

Yes, it is true Women has been used to sell products. But it is changing now. Have you forgotten the "cocoa cola" advert?

Women are now being used to sell products to women. From cars to Vidal Sasoons "I am worth it" shampoos.

In bollywood cinemas the focus has moved from the sexuality of the Heroine to the sexuality of the "Hero". In every bollywood film now the male gets all the lavish attention on his body...a lavish attention that once was only reserve of women...

Men and Women find each other attractive. Men and Women will always be interested in each other. Women's sexuality has been supressed by men for thousands of years. It is time that a balance is restored between sexuality of men and women. Instead of alienting men and women from their sexuality we need to educate ourselves to deal with our sexuality...and perhaps celebrate it? -)

I have noticed that more than the westerners themselves, muslims living in the west jump to the west's defense.

They jump to the defense of freedom, freedom of individuality. Freedom to choose and choose to be free. We should all stand up for freedom!

Yes, we all have a disdain for traditionalist culture in the east that sometimes hinders personal growth. But that doesn't mean that we replace our system completely with a foreigner's system that does not serve our purpose.

                    foreigners system?

                    freedom is a foreigners system?

                    Regards,

                      Alaikum assalaam

Whats the difference between ordinary visible? What is and what is not ordinary visible?

                      Salaam

Khi- Salam. Exactly my point. GOD didnt leave this for the scholars to decide. Each woman can decide this for herself according to the time and place she lives in. Thats the flexibility which GOD has given and no ones there to fix it. If you ask me then hair would obviously fall under the category of ordinary visible. GOD Bless!

                        Salam free- minders

I was sitting here trying to imagine a girl in a hijab trying to enjoy life and the thought of visiting a theme park also crossed my mind , so naturally the two thoughts got mixed up. i ended imagine what it would be like for a girl/woman wearing hijab to sit on a roller coaster ride or any other theme park ride, then a question entered my mind. would they allow a female wearing hijab on to a theme park ride, i mean wouldn't it be dangerous for her getting tangled up in her hijab.
I have never seen women in hijabs going deep sea diving or mountain climbing or horse riding or sports of any kind. Women in hijabs are restricted to the kind of things they can or can't do( It doesn't have to be the activities i have mentioned).
If a girl in hijab had to do school plays how many different parts in different plays could she do whilst wearing hijab?
Allah created expressions on our faces, how do they show these expressions without showing their faces?
If women in hijabs are protected from temptations and don't tempt men into doing evil, does this mean women in hijabs don't sin or commit adultry?

                            Peace Tahira,

I think you may be thinking a little too much about the subject of hijab and could give yourself an unnecessary migrain. There is noncooperation between those who surrender and those who oppose. That is, you need not conform to their ways in order to seek enjoyment. This is a transient world, it passes. What we percieve is only temporary happiness and distress. Avoid them and be devoted to Allah where you will find happiness that lasts.

Whether you dress code is a simple thong or loin cloth, to a burqua in my opinion is all up to you. Who is the more modest one? Maybe the former, or the latter.

                            Joe

I still wear head hijab, just because my family still don't know my veiws on hijab (since they are the type that even if you show them blatant proof, since their minds are made up, they'll deny regardless)...not because I like wearing. I plan to take it off, when I leave for London, and let them know how i feel about head coverings (and sunnism in a whole). Just giving myself some time for mental preparation.
