Peace be upon you,
I would like to try an exercise in this thread if everyone is willing, there is never any compulsion.
I would liek us all to stop writing it like this "Hadith", and start replacing that with "story" (notice the lower case).
I guarantee it will help make the concept clear to any who will translate the word consistently.

This is an exercise to help us demistify the language. WHy "Ayat" and "Al Quran"? Why not "sign" and "proclamation"?
We are talking in english so lets translate and bring the clarity. As I said, there is no compulsion, but there should be no fear of translation.

Ayat means signs does it not?
Quran means recitation?So what is the benefit of playing word games?
Accept these things as metaphors but don't play with the meanings perhaps?

thank you, that was helpful. i can imagine that it must be difficult for young children who are taught hadith alongside Quran.

There is no mystery here because we both know what the words refer to. Those who don't know those Arabic words will soon catch up, and so those Arabic words will not look unfamiliar to them anymore!We are talking in english so lets translate and bring the clarity. There is no compulsion and there certainly is no fear of translation but it makes more sense to me if we use the original Arabic words since the discussions and studying here are mainly about the Quran. If we don't use the original Arabic words some people would think we are discussing something else other than Al Quran. And also because Quranic Arabic words are safer to use as translation cannot always be accurate. For example, can you translate the following and still stay true to their meaning
Ayat Al Quran
Ayat Al Kitab -

Taj, your inability to to do a simple exercise should show you that you are "serving" the arab language rather than the message. Deep down, underlying all this is the idolization of Arabic that has been ingrained in us all.
And the exercise has helped me immensely, so I offered it to those who are not afraid, who realize the God's hands are not tied by a language.

This was just a bad example, but not an incorrect assemssment as evidenced all over this forum.

Fair enough. I get what u mean.

Quran means recitation?But I guess, the reason for what u state is.......When we say Quran, It means a specific book containing verses from God. Though it might translate as recitation, in English, 'recitation' is a general word and has a general meaning(Not specific to God's verses)
Again when we say , Ayat we mean Ayat of Quran.
And 'signs', as in english also becomes a general word and can mean much more.Peace!
