i have often wondered why Allah commanded them to sacrifice a heifer.
but using Qd And Lanes you can come up with heads.

Can I ask which QD - (Quran Dictionary) you are refering to? Is it the Dictionary of the Holy Quran by Abdul Mannan Omar or is it a different one? If you are NOT refering to the one by Abdul Mannan Omar, can you give me the references to the one that you ARE using?
i have often wondered why Allah commanded them to sacrifice a heifer.
A good reason was formulated in The QXP in that it was GOD's way to demonstrate to them and to get them to willingly accept the fact that there are absolutely no divine qualities in Cows or any other type of cattle for that matter. This understanding sounds pretty plausible to me.
A personal understanding of my own is that Allah had commanded them to destroy the very idol that they have fashioned and erected; i.e. the Golden Calf.
Here is why I believe so...
In 267 Allah commanded Moses' people to slaughter/rip apart/destroy a heifer. Remember this particular animal is the one that they sought to worship and subscribe divinity to.
Now in 268 when they asked exactly what it is, GOD said that it is one that is neither too old NOR too young, but of middle age. I believe that the calf that they have made can fit this description because for one, they did not fashion it as a really old or elderly looking cow, nor did they make it as a newborn or infant cow.
In 269 they asked about it's color and GOD said that it is a yellow or fawn-colored one. A sight to behold and very pleasing to all who gaze upon it. Supposedly, they made their idol out of Gold which is why it is said that they have fashioned a Golden Calf. Indeed a Golden Calf has a very bright and rich yellowish color to it and is very dazzling and pleasing to the eye of the beholder.
In 270 when they asked what kind of heifer she is, GOD said in 271 that it is one which has not been trained to till the soil or water the fields. And it is one without any blemish or marks of a working cow. Keep in mind that in 268 GOD says that it is a Middle Aged one. At that median age, cows are either working the fields or being geared/trained to do so. But this particular one fits neither description. Their idol Does fit the description since it has never been trained to till the soil or water the fields. And it is one without any blemish or marks of a working cow.
As I said, this is a personal understanding of my own and I realize that I can be way off base with it. But I admit that it is not something I have given much thought to nor is it something that I think about alot because I personally don't see it as something as pressing as feeding the poor, establishing the salat and contributing towards zakaa', giving the Quran and the message to people, trying to better myself and correct my behaviour, etc.

The word heifer is Baqra which is also the title for sura two - i think we should look at what the whole sura two is about to get a picture of what the meaning of the word is.
might surprise some of us-is it talking about the animal or not.

This is what I have said the translation is talking about to better our bahaviours.
And the calf well that is another one of their stories -i think.
Using Burhans you see they translate AAJILA as hasten and in some places its translated as a calf.
I don?t believe it is a calf but that is a biblical story embodied in the translation.
I think The Israelites believed in The God and not calfs.
I might do the calf aya?s one day though.
