Atomic contact?

I am a Biochemist and my Physics is really crap! I sometimes wonder when I pick up somehting, what sort of physics is between the atoms of my fingers and the atoms of something I pick up? The electrons are spinning around the atoms all the time and do they stop spinning, do they contact each other, and if they do not then what is the force involve when I try to lift an object with my fingers? shock

In the quantum world electons are not discrete particles but we recognize them as their probabilty in a place. you use work against the gravity to pick up the object. Electronmagetic force are thousand times greater than gravity, thats why when you walk on earth you do not just get into the earth because repulsion between you and earth electrons is much stronger then the gravity.
I found physics very intriguing especially string theory A good intro can be found with following pbs movie by Brian Green based on his book Elegant universe (also a good intro the quantum mechanics, general relatitvely, and string)

I agree that quantum mechanics is confusing at first and it is still puzzling even to physicist today. String theory is latest theory trying to answer all the fundamental forces at once, yet no body know all its essence, and some physicists still claim it is not a valid scientific thoery but rather a theory of philosphy.
