      Peace,

The only restriction is that you do not approach 'Salat' while intoxicated.

Other than that, I would say 'no, it is not forbidden'.

          As SAlaam Alaikum,

          Is Alcohol/whine forbidden to drink?

          salaam

          Peace sister

I have to say that the Quran was clear in this subject; it clearly told us that drinking "Kamr" is "Rijsun" a very bad deed motivated by the Shaitan

"O you who believe! intoxicants and games of chance and (sacrificing to) stones set up and (dividing by) arrows are only an uncleanness, the Shaitan's work; shun it therefore that you may be successful. "

          (90)

-> Celar that "Khamr" is not something clean as well it is Shaitan work and Allah is telling us to SHUN IT,

Let me add sister that "Khamr" does not really mean alcohol, the Arabic word is common especially the word "Khamira" which is something they buy in the Arab countries that cause the cake or bread to expand, it is actually bacteria as far as i know ie. sort of rotten to a limit that will not be harmful to us when we eat it, of course you know the harm you get when you eat rotten food

also if you ever bough raw sugar cane and leave it for long time you will see that it starts to smell like "Alcohol", in fact this is how they manufacture the white alcohol, they extract it from rotten sugar canes

Consequently Alcohol in the Arabic countries is called "Khamra" this is the street common name and the professional Arabic name is "Khamr" that is used in the Quran

Therefore and according to 590, The true believers/submitters should never come near it "Shun it"

I actually used to be a heavy drinker years ago, I was drinking heavily from 19 to 22 then from 22-26 my drinking was far less due to the fact I never liked it, it tastes horrible, it stinks, it made me stink and aggressive and drive like mad and possibly fight with anyone, and sure the headache is a must as well sleep disturbance and stomach problem, in a way I could not find any thing good other than a couple of hours being high, so it was easy for me to put my drinking down in 4 years and when I married at 26, my wife hated it so I quit for good and can't be happier for 15 years now, so I know what alcohol is as I have been there but what surprised me that I read in the Quran that Paradise will have Alcohol but was described that it will taste great and it will not make us drunk as WELL IT WILL NOT CAUSE HEADCHE TO US, and when I read this and thought about the agony I used to go through when I used to drink ?especially the must have headache? i quickly realized how useful and great for humanity ?the prohibitions of the human Khamr by Allah?, He knows better than us for sure

          Peace

            Peace NoProgressive,

Alcohol or alcoholic drinks are not specifically declared forbidden ('haram') and there is a good reason for this in my opinion.

Alcohol is the antidote to propylene glycol and methanol poisoning.

It has benefits but it also has harms (which are potentially much greater). I personally avoid drinks with alcohol simply because there are so many nice drinks without it - and nothing beats a cup of ice-cold water in my opinion.

A person who is intoxicated loses the ability to judge things and the harm comes from these social effects, as well as the physical harm to the liver, organs and brain with continued and excessive use.

The root for "khamr" is related to "khimar" - a covering - so that 'khamr' - or alcohol tends to cover so to speak (meaning to dull or obscure) the ability to judge.

You may drink it, but as the verse says, someone with understanding will avoid it.

            Coming to Ahmed's post...

I think what you mean is that it is YEAST, not a bacteria.

Yeast is needed to ferment sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. All alcohol is made in this way - any carbohydrate within plant material can be converted to alcohol by yeast. Grapes produce wine; barley/rye is used to produce beer, whisky and bourbon, potatoes are used to make vodka, sugar cane/molasses is used to make rum and so on.

            Regards.

              Peace all,

              Is Alcohol/whine forbidden to drink?

              1). Is alcohol/wine forbidden?

2). Is it okay to to sneak off and remove my headscarf?

3). Is the headscarf mandatory or not?

              4). Are tattoos haram?

5). Should I pray with or without the hijaab?.......

6). Should I STOP praying until I Know how to?

              7). Can I get involved with a non-muslim?

These are just Some of the questions I have witnessed from you since you have joined this forum. I've never replied because I realize that EVERYONE who comes here needs to time to grow.

However, I must say that I have noticed two things about you young sister.

1). You sure ask alot of questions. The majority of the questions you have asked so far, you could answer yourself if you just pick up The Quran and read it. Instead of always coming to this forum and asking people their respective observations concerning The Quran, you should use that energy to search for that answer yourself. You are duty-bound to do so. You ask questions expecting people to just GIVE you the answers. That is NOT the way to learn. You must ask GOD for guidance, pick The Quran and search for these answers yourself.

2). You also seem to be asking ALL THE WRONG QUESTIONS!! I am sorry to express this to you in this manner and it is not a personal attack. You ask if it's okay to sneak around w/out hijaab but wear it in your fathers presence. You ask about tattoos. And now you are asking about alcoholic beverages. These sorts of questions make it look like you are not only seeking answers, you are seeking The Okay to do these things and you are asking others here these questions to get the justification you are looking for.

I realize that you are young and that you live in a traditional muslim household. I am sure that you are in a very difficult position. However, seeking means of rebellion and asking people here a million questions that you could very well find the answers to yourself will only make your life more difficult than what it already is.

Please forgive my forthright tone and I say this to you out of sincere concern, not out of any contempt towards you.

Concerning point number one I have raised

And DO NOT uphold what you have no knowledge of. For the hearing, eyesight, and mind, all these YOU are responsible for.
              (1736)

              Concerning point number two......

The ones who took their Deen as amusement and games, and were Preoccupied With This WORDLY LIFE. Today We forget them as THEY forgot their meeting on this day, and they Did Not heed Our revelations.
              (751)

Peace Be With You My Sister,
              Damon.

                Dear Damon,

While I completely see your viewpoint, I will remind you of what the Lord said when our Prophet dismissed a seeker of truth

"He frowned and turned away. When the blind one came to him. And what makes you know, perhaps he is seeking to purify? Or to remember, so the remembrance will benefit him?" (The Message 802-5)

God guides people in His own way and to His own time...

"Your Lord has not left you, nor did He forget. And the Hereafter is better for you than the first. And your Lord will give you and you will be pleased. Did he not find you an orphan and He sheltered you? And He found you lost, and He guided you? And He found you in need, so He gave you riches?" (The Message 934-9)

Hmmm. the Quran has 114 Chapters in it, some reaching 150+ ayats. You want me to go through the whole thing in one day? Sorry but my the index that I have, does not cover every topic that I want to know about!

And EXCUSE ME, but HAVE I NOT STARTED A QURAN STUDY GROUP??????? YES SO DON't ACT AS IF I DON'T READ THE QURAN, when I try my hardest to fit at least one chapter a night into my schedule, AND THEN POST ALL OF MY NOTES ON THIS FORUM!!!!!

2). You also seem to be asking ALL THE WRONG QUESTIONS!!

                  I don't care.

Most of my questions have been on a "haraam or not" basses, not some "should I do it ??"

You say that I come a from a traditional household, and ebcuase of my beliefs I am seeking rebellion... no.

Tatoos--- My mother actually took me and my sister to a tatoo parlor to go get one a few months ago, and we only didn't get it becuase I have to be 18 regardless of my mother being there.

Scarf--- MY FATHER is the only one that poses the problem.

Alcohol--- I'm NOT asking becuase I want to drink beer. I don't even like the taste (and I have tasted it). I want to know becuase I know some people believe that it's ok and some not. So at the least I wanted to read the arguments.

                  salaam

nice to have u back and wish u and ure family the best for 2006 and after!

concerning noprogressive - i had the same ideas about her questions but then i thought about myself at her age or even a little older, when i started being interested in islam (20 years ago) My worst question back then was about salat - if i couldnt hold back gaz ops during ritual prayer was it valid or not lol Thinking back at myself i just wonder...

peace noprogressive, true coran is a long way to read and even longer to understand - and i dont pretend i did it by now!
But could i just propose that u use the research function, coZ all these subjects have been quite thouroughly discussed on this forum.

                      Peace NoProgressive, Damon, Elke, all

but to be fair we have to say she's not only asking questions waiting for us to answer them but she is also trying to find the truth in studying the quran as we can see in many other threads where she ponders about the meaning of different verses and shares her views about them with us...

Go ahead NoProgressive but the advice of Elke concerning the research function is a good one!

                        Peace all,

Oh boy, what did I get myself into? I wanted to help by pointing out what others have not and just like that Damon is attacking poor little NoProgressive.

                        Anyway......

First of all Brother Layth, I am very well aware that GOD is the One who guides and He does so as He sees fit. Also, I believe that because she is so young, she has a better fighting chance at that age than alot of us did when we were that age ourselves.

More Importantly, you are mixing apples and oranges Layth. 802-5 illustrates how the Blind Man was ignored, frowned upon and rejected. That is not what I did with this young lady. I gave her advice which is what she made this thread for.....to get advice and feedback from other members here. As for 934-9, well I truly cannot see how that fits with any part of this discussion. No offense intended Bro.

                        Peace damon,
nice to have u back and wish u and ure family the best for 2006 and after!

Peace to you too sister LK and May GOD make 2006 a wonderful and prosperous year for you and your family.

concerning noprogressive - i had the same ideas about her questions but then i thought about myself at her age or even a little older, when i started being interested in islam (20 years ago)

My advice to her didn't concern that she was searching, it was concerning what it is that she's searching. It also concerns how when she needs an answer about what The Quran says, she's always asking others when she could just as easily research and find those answers herself, just like many of the rest of the members here.

Your question was about gazing during salat, she is asking about tatoos and alcohol. Do you see the point that I am trying to make? At her age she has a very impressionable young mind and the older people here have an obligation to give her the most appropriate advice for someone her age and maturity level. I have seen many threads initiated by her where I feel alot of the older members here have given her terrible advice. One such thread is the one concerning her taking off the hijab behind her fathers back. I was very disappointed with the responses by some people in that thread and thus I felt compelled to give my two cents and re-iterate the advice that Layth had given which is what you would expect others here to say in response to her question.

peace noprogressive, true coran is a long way to read and even longer to understand - and i dont pretend i did it by now!
But could i just propose that u use the research function, coZ all these subjects have been quite thouroughly discussed on this forum.

My point exactly!! Not only that, but she uses the excuse that the Index of Her Quran is not fully exhaustive. Poor excuse because if she has inernet access, then she too has access to the same internet search functions as the rest of us. A good start would be www.studyquran.org among other Quranic search functions. So that really is no excuse.

As Salaam 'Alaiykum NoProgressive, My Sister....

Hmmm. the Quran has 114 Chapters in it, some reaching 150+ ayats. You want me to go through the whole thing in one day? Sorry but my the index that I have, does not cover every topic that I want to know about!

Did I make the suggestion that you go through it one day? This kind of response shows the lack of maturity that I am speaking about. You took my post as a personal attack and you are now lashing out at me and throwing tantrums as the part with all capital letters clearly demonstrate.

Also, you can use the index search on the free-minds QT page or studyquran.org or openburhan or any of the other of thousands of Quranic search functions on the web. They are as equally within your reach as they are to anyone else sis.

The all caps lets me know that you are yelling at me on screen, but that's alright sweety, I'll look past that and stick to the topic. My response to you concerning this is this.....

If you are studying The Quran Every Night, as you claim, then why is it that you Still have to ask where something is in The Quran or what does The Quran say concerning such and such, etc.? In fact, you posting this part of your tantrum could have been left out because it is irrelevent to the points that I have raised in my prior post to you.

2). You also seem to be asking ALL THE WRONG QUESTIONS!!

                        I don't care.

Yes, that's quite obvious. You didn't have to tell me.

Tatoos--- My mother actually took me and my sister to a tatoo parlor to go get one a few months ago, and we only didn't get it becuase I have to be 18 regardless of my mother being there.

The point is you definately want that tatoo. You admit that the only reason you didn't get it is because of your age. For me, a tatoo is no big deal and I certainly wouldn't argue or debate somebody about a tatoo being haram or not. I think is says alot about a person who's even willing to engage in such a sensless debate. The point I am trying to make is the motivationsbehind many of the questions you ask.

Alcohol--- I'm NOT asking becuase I want to drink beer. I don't even like the taste (and I have tasted it). I want to know becuase I know some people believe that it's ok and some not. So at the least I wanted to read the arguments

If you have no intentions of drinking beer then why are you concerning yourself with this??!! I have no intentions of drinking or smoking so I will not even enquire about it. You only ask the questions that are on your mind or at the least floating in the back of your mind. If you are serious about pleasing GOD then you should focus on questions that demonstrate that and not questions that we'd expect, well not so serious people to ask.

Scarf--- MY FATHER is the only one that poses the problem.

As you already know, I truly sympathize your position and you already know what I believe is the way in which you can approach this problem.

Now, are you ready to calm down and be adult about this or are you going to yell at me some more?

                        Salaam My Sister,
                        Damon.

                          As Salaam Alaikum Damon,

This kind of response shows the lack of maturity that I am speaking about. You took my post as a personal attack and you are now lashing out at me and throwing tantrums as the part with all capital letters clearly demonstrate.

Shut the heck up already. You lashed out at me, and you were all pesonal! Telling me to go read the Quran adn look it up for my ownself. MOCKING me with all of the questions that I have asked.

You are the one who is IMMATURE, by basically telling me to go look it up my ownself, becuase you are tired of reading my questions. I don't give a rat's tail about you, so why are you reading my post if you are so annoyed?? It's not as if I am saying, "DAmon please answer my questions". No. I'm general, and I'm not personally asking YOU to answer them.

You are immature because you mock me, tell me to go look it up myself, make a display that as I don't refer to the Quran for anyhting, all in public. What about PM??? Oh I'm sure that you wanted everyone to see.

WHatever Damon, go get a life.

Also, you can use the index search on the free-minds QT page or studyquran.org or openburhan or any of the other of thousands of Quranic search functions on the web. They are as equally within your reach as they are to anyone else sis.

No. I'm using FM's forum, thank you.

The all caps lets me know that you are yelling at me on screen, but that's alright sweety, I'll look past that and stick to the topic. My response to you concerning this is this.....

Yes, I am yelling at you. Stick to the topic? Why can't you stick to the topic? You're the one who has gone OFF TOPIC and told the whole world that you are tired of my questions.

If you are studying The Quran Every Night, as you claim, then why is it that you Still have to ask where something is in The Quran or what does The Quran say concerning such and such, etc.?

Damon I know that you may be wrapped up in a world, where you think that only your opinion is correct, but as for me I like ot read other people's arguments as well and form one myself.

Let's look at all of the questions (so you say) that I have asked, that you seem to claim are on a "haraam or not" level.

                          1). Is alcohol/wine forbidden?

                          THat's 1.

2). Is it okay to to sneak off and remove my headscarf?

I didn't ask that! Get you facts right! What I asked is it worth it? I wasn't looking for Quranic verses, ayats, etc,etc... but other peopel's opinions about a delimma that I am facing. Is it seeking approval? Heck no. But would I like other people's input on the issue? Sure, why not. What's wrong with asking for advice per se?

3). Is the headscarf mandatory or not?

I don't think that I've ever really asked that here, because I've always been of the opinion that it isn't. Maybe I have asked for a definition of the word "khimar"....

                          4). Are tattoos haram?

                          1. (but where can i find that issue addressed in the Quran? DOes the Quran talk about tatoos? Does the Quran go into how much is too much when it comes to changing his creation???)

5). Should I pray with or without the hijaab?.......

I didn't ask that. Read the topic. I didn't ASK should I pray with our wihtout the hijab! I asked other women who DON'T wear hijab, if they pray with it on or not. Can I find in the Quran where it says , "Those who don't wear hijab during the day, wear it when they pray?"....NO! I wanted to DISCUSS that with other women. I was DISCUSSING the issue! I was NOT asking "should I or should I not".

6). Should I STOP praying until I Know how to?

Can I find that in the Quran as well Damon? Does the Quran address that issue??

Read the topic. You would know that I am afraid of putting innovation in my prayer. Geesh.

                          7). Can I get involved with a non-muslim?

Didn't ask that either, what I asked for was a CORRECT TRANSLATION of the verse! And then I asked for other people's opinions on an inter-faith marriage. Is it so wrong to have a discussion?

So as we look... it's really just 2 questions that really have dealt with "haraam or not". The rest are just asking for other peopel's opininions, and really just HELP on what I should do in whatever situation that I am.

In fact, you posting this part of your tantrum could have been left out because it is irrelevent to the points that I have raised in my prior post to you.

How was your post ever on topic?

The point is you definately want that tatoo.

Yea, sure I would like a tatoo. But me mentioing what I had mentioned, was to refute your claim that I come from a "tradiitonal household" as if ALL of my family holds traditional views. NO. Just my dad.

You admit that the only reason you didn't get it is because of your age.

Yup I sure didn't, because I was pretyt content that it's ok to get a tatoo. But time goes by, and your views become more gray.

For me, a tatoo is no big deal and I certainly wouldn't argue or debate somebody about a tatoo being haram or not. I think is says alot about a person who's even willing to engage in such a sensless debate. The point I am trying to make is the motivationsbehind many of the questions you ask.

Wow, I was debating/arguing if a tatoo is haraam or not? Brother it's obvious that you haven't even read my posts.

I've only ASKED. I've never gone bakc and said, "well blah blaha, so you're wrong".

Oh yes, would I LOVE for Tattoos to be ok? SURE! I badly want some proof that it's ok. BUT you sure aren't finding me ARGUING/Debating that it's ok, after I've freaking ask if it was or not!!!

Whre did I ask, and then go back and try to say "it's ok, becuase blah blah" (that woudl prove motivation). Oh wait, I'm looking at the thread right now. I made ONE post, the initial post!

Of course it would make since to ask a question, when you want to know, and you want to do somethign!

I'm not just going to say, "Is it haraam to go to Africa?" when I have no intentions going, nor am I interested in going, and I haven't stumbled upon an issue that makes me think about it.

But i woudl make much since to ASK if something is haraam or not, when I'm interested in doing it! You can call that wanting to argue with people, but UNTIL I come back and start actually ARGUING with people who gave me replies... DONT accuse me of having some "motivaitons behind" them as if I won't accept an opinion that is against what I want to do.

If you have no intentions of drinking beer then why are you concerning yourself with this??!!

Becuase I know that there are some Muslims (like my ex step mother) who believes that it's ok, and it worries me that she may be doing something haraam!

I'll yell at you all that I want.

                          salaam

                            Salaam,

A glass of wine to the dinner isn't bad at all, hmm ask the people in France.

I guess all kind of over consumptions of food, drinks even water can kill us or make us very ill.

                            Use your God giving brain!!!

                            Peace Sis Maria

I appluade NP for asking all these questions, I wish I did when I was that young, this is the only way she will learn about her religion in the most quickest way

there is never a silly question and the Quran encouraged us to ask the people with knowledge

                              Peace to all

                                Peace Progressive

I feel that you can ask questions as long as you keep your part by studying the subject of your inquiry.

I see that you may be a little annoyed with Damon, but do not let annoyance push you to transgress bounds set by God.

                                Question the reading

                                Why is that?

This seems to contradict, how come?

                                Is this what God means?

Has this term been used before in the reading in a similar context?

You should get yourself a notebook and keep notes and questions. You can have your own index to subjects when you are done. Then when you go at it again things may be easier to piece together. You can start approaching from different angles. See which words are used ad if they are repeated elsewhere, etc. Take your time. Seek advice from those who know.

                                Joe

Ok so tattoos are kind of up in the air, alcohol or at least yeast based alcohol looks to be a possible no no depending on interpretation, but what of tobacco or marijuana smoking. I am seeking understand a few things and i am just curious. I know it has probably allready been discussed here, but I was just curious about these others.

and what is taught of addiction in general like caffine?

                                    congratulations NOprogressive,

You have just shown your true colors and motives behind being here and now that the truth has reared its head, you threw another tantrum....an even bigger one this time. Are you familiar with the saying "The truth hurts"? It sure does, doesn't it.

I don't blame your age at all, it's all on you kiddo. There are and have been others here who are younger than you and have demonstrated way more maturity and much more seriousness than you can possibly show yourself. So it's not the age, it's the simple fact that you lack appropriate maturity and intellect. You know that others here see this and it's bugging you.

There is a reason that I stopped posting here at this forum and the behaviour displayed by you and certain others here are just one of them.

I'll grant your request and leave you alone and of course it wouldn't be worth it for me to reply to your last tantrum, so I'll just leave it as it is.

                                    One last thing......

WHatever Damon, go get a life.

I think this episode has highlighted the need for a Q&A / FAQ.
The answers in the FAQ would link to answers given in the various thread + a summary.

NP's question are standard ones that will be asked over and over again.

A job for the mods I would say.

                                      peace.

                                        As Salaam Alaikum Damon,

                                        congratulations NOprogressive,

                                        LOL

You have just shown your true colors and motives behind being here and now that the truth has reared its head, you threw another tantrum....an even bigger one this time. Are you familiar with the saying "The truth hurts"? It sure does, doesn't it.

Funny, becuase I have no motive to be here except learning about Islam. But whatever Damon.

I don't blame your age at all, it's all on you kiddo. Are you just mad becuase you mocked crap that wasn't even true? Accusing me of asking questions, that I never asked. You're a liar.

Just becuase I choose not to get into deeper issues like, "Was Mary a virgin?", does not mean that I am immature. What's immature is argung with people who you are asking for help from, and you will find htat i DON'T argue/debate with people who I ask questions, you just go around LYING about me and accuse me of doing it. You've been proven a LIAR, and you wont own up to your mistake.

                                        What's immature is

1.) Going off topic to prove a point.
2.) Exposing your distaste for me in public, instead of just PMing me and telling me your issue.
3.) Expecting to be well recieved when the first thing you do is MOCK everything that you think that I have said.
4.) Telling me to go read the Quran.

Just becuase you don't take my questions seriously, does not mean that I'm not serious!

There is a reason that I stopped posting here at this forum and the behaviour displayed by you and certain others here are just one of them.

Sorry if you ever thought that I noticed you were gone.

I'll grant your request and leave you alone and of course it wouldn't be worth it for me to reply to your last tantrum, so I'll just leave it as it is.

                                        You've already replied.

Those who need to get a life are the people who are on forums day and night posting meaningless questions. win

                                        Damon.

Funny becuase you seem to have had all of the time half reading everything that I have said.

                                        salaam

                                          Salam sister YESprogressive,
Dont listen to that fellow named "Damon". He attacked/insulted me as well. Go check out what he wrote to me at

I believe your questioning is very good particular at your age. Many people at your age including myself have asked many questions like that. Most of them which i asked as a sunni were even stupid and irrelevant like "what was the prophet's favorite color? how close do we have to trim the moustache? how long to keep the beard? etc etc". But there were many relevant questions too and you seem to be asking only or mostly relevant ones. Excellent very good although you come from a sunni background. May GOD guide you rightly . GOD Bless!
