    Salam "agentxxx",

    peace all,

on the 10th of this month is id-al-adha and people in pakistan are busy buying animal for slaughtering, since the last ten years i have stopped this practice, now instead every year i give the money to someone who is poor, this year i wanted my friends to donate the money for earthquake victims but most of my friends disagree and say that sacrifying an animal on id is a compulsary duty and there is no other way.
i would like to know what you all think?

WHAT IS THE LOGIC BEHIND THIS?
WHAT DOES THE QURAN SAYS ABOUT THIS?

    peace.

JK- There is no Eid in the Quran and the sacrifice is LIMITED TO THE PILGRIMS. The whole world doesnt have to do it. GOD says in the Quran
The animal offerings are among the (hajj) rites decreed by GOD for your own good.* You shall mention GOD's name on them while they are standing in line. Once they are offered for sacrifice, you shall eat therefrom and feed the poor and the needy. This is why we subdued them for you, that you may show your appreciation.
If you go with the conext it reads
Surely, those who disbelieve and repulse others from the path of GOD, and from the Sacred Masjid that we designated for all the people - be they natives or visitors - and seek to pollute it and corrupt it, we will afflict them with painful retribution.
We appointed Abraham to establish the Shrine "You shall not idolize any other god beside Me, and purify My shrine for those who visit it, those who live near it, and those who bow and prostrate.
"And proclaim that the people shall observe Hajj pilgrimage. They will come to you walking or riding on various exhausted (means of transportation). They will come from the farthest locations."
From here on the context is clear. You may read on if you want. "Muslims" take 2226 out of context thereby claiming it to be for everyone on earth while this is not the case.
*2236 Animal offerings from the pilgrims conserve the resources at the pilgrimage site. Also dont forget GOD says in the next verse, following 2236
Neither their meat, nor their blood reaches GOD. What reaches Him is your righteousness. He has subdued them for you, that you may show your appreciation by glorifying GOD for guiding you. Give good news to the charitable.
    GOD Bless!

and people called the mayan's savage? Any god that asks of you a sacrafice from it's own creation is just silly. more man made rituals meant to ward off evil spirits and bad luck. Warped. i commend you on not only overcoming such a silly ritual but also for turning it into a sacrafice that bennefits humanity.

JK- Only as a reminder read
Neither their(the sacrificed animals') meat, nor their blood reaches GOD. What reaches Him is your righteousness. He has subdued them for you, that you may show your appreciation by glorifying GOD for guiding you. Give good news to the charitable.

Ok cool he can subdue an animal, but to sacrafice it? that's sick and twisted and a complete waste of a beautigul creation. I don't buy it. If the word was that he subdued it so that we make make feast of it for the old or sick? then maybe

JK- Sacrifice is the same to feed te poor at least in the Quranic context. Dont confuse this with the Biblical one. GOD Bless!

So the sacrifice here is for those that can afford it to slaughter an animal and then gift it to the poor?

what i heard through the media is that this year 2.5 million pilgrims are performing hajj, that would means almost 5 million animals will be slaughtered in mecca only by the pilgrims , now would not it be better to donate money to the poors instead of giving them a bag of meat to eat?

                peace sawtooth,

believe me only 10% of the meat is given to the poors , the rest of the 90% is send to friends, family members and influencial people or stored for barbecue parties after the eid.

                peace.

JK- Donating money to the poor is probably the worst solution. Poor people dont know how to handle money correcty and may waste it. Also in Pakistan the poor people are sent out by mafia bosses who collect all the money from them so NO this is not idea at all. The best way is to give them what they primarily require which is food and shelter. As for the 2.5 million pilgrims, nowhere does GOD fix the date of hajj to a 3 particular days in a year BUT gives us the four known months to perform it in them.
Hajj shall be observed in the specified months(plural)*. Whoever sets out to observe Hajj shall refrain from sexual intercourse, misconduct, and arguments throughout Hajj. Whatever good you do, GOD is fully aware thereof. As you prepare your provisions for the journey, the best provision is righteousness. You shall observe Me, O you who possess intelligence.
*2197 Hajj can be observed any time during the Sacred Months Zul-Hijjah, Muharram, Safar, and Rabi I. Local governments restrict Hajj to a few days for their own convenience. See 937

Brother I am not suggesting that the money should be given to the professional beggars, that indeed is not a good idea. I give the money to a former watchman, who had worked with us for almost 30 years, an honest, pious, sincere and hard working guy who cant beg, cant work now and has no other financial support. People like him are around all of us, it gives me a million times more satisfaction/peace to spend money like this rather then spending it to slaughter an animal. I have been requesting/debating my friends to spend this money on those around them, but they have their own logic.

An average animal for slaughtering/scarifying cost around 12000 rupees; the good ones are around 25000 rupees and so on, the maximum asking price for an animal this year is 350,000 rupees for a male goat, the reason the owner said on TV today is that on one of its ear the name of Allah is written and on the other Muhammad .
100s of millions will be spend on slaughtering of animals in pakistan alone, i wish they are spend to improve the living conditions of fellow citizens
