The 90/10 Principle
Author Stephen Covey Management ProfessionalHave you read this before?
Discover the 90/10 Principle. It will change your life (at least the way you react to situations). What is this principle?10% of life is made up of what happens to you. 90% of life is decided by how you react. What does this mean?
We really have no control over 10% of what happens to us. We cannot stop the car from breaking down. The plane will be late arriving, which throws our whole schedule off. A driver may cut us off in traffic. We have no control over this 10%. The other 90% is different. You determine the other 90%.
How? By your reaction. You cannot control a red light., but you can control your reaction. Don't let people fool you; YOU can control how you react.
Let's use an example.
You are eating breakfast with your family. Your daughter knocks over a cup of coffee onto your business shirt. You have no control over what just what happened. What happens when the next will be determined by how you react? You curse. You harshly scold your daughter for knocking the cup over. She breaks down in tears. After scolding her, you turn to your spouse and criticize her for placing the cup too close to the edge of the table. A short verbal battle follows. You storm upstairs and change your shirt. Back downstairs, you find your daughter has been too busy crying to finish breakfast and get ready for school. She misses the bus. Your spouse must leave immediately for work.
You rush to the car and drive your daughter to school. Because you are late, you drive 40 miles an hour in a 30 mph speed limit. After a 15-minute delay and throwing $60 traffic fine away, you arrive at school. Your daughter runs into the building without saying goodbye. After arriving at the office 20 minutes late, you find you forgot your briefcase. Your day has started terrible. As it continues, it seems to get worse and worse. You look forward to coming home, When you arrive home, you find small wedge in your relationship with your spouse and daughter.
Why? Because of how you reacted in the morning. Why did you have a bad day?
A) Did the coffee cause it?
B) Did your daughter cause it?
C) Did the policeman cause it?
D) Did you cause it?The answer is " D".
You had no control over what happened with the coffee.
How you reacted in those 5 seconds is what caused your bad day. Here is what could have and should have happened.Coffee splashes over you. Your daughter is about to cry. You gently say, "It's ok honey, you just need, to be more careful next time". Grabbing a towel you rush upstairs. After grabbing a new shirt and your briefcase, you come back down in time to look through the window and see your child getting on the bus. She turns and waves. You arrive 5 minutes early and cheerfully greet the staff. Your boss comments on how good the day you are having.
Notice the difference?
Two different scenarios. Both started the same. Both ended different. Why? Because of how you REACTED.
You really do not have any control over 10% of what happens. The other 90% was determined by your reaction. The 90-10 principle is incredible. I believe, in a way, many know about 90/10 principle, BUT only FEW who apply it.
The result, Millions of people are suffering from undeserved stress, trials, problems and heartache.
We all must understand and apply the 90/10 principle.
Believe or NOT, It CAN & WILL change your life!!!

Peace. This is a fantastic general principle for living!! I have been trying to implement it in my life recently, with great results.(You have the power to do the 'right thing'.)
Can the moderators put this thread in the general section so it gets more coverage? thanks all. -
Salaams All,
You are right .The first time I heard this was from George bush telling sadaam Hussein you need to be proactive and not reactive.
This is a general theme of Kaballah.
God Bless.

Peace be upon you all,
Yes! This is a CRUCIAL part of the message of the God, the RESPONSE!!
The RESPONSE!!
The RESPONSE!! D
But we have to first WAKE UP before we can be alert enough to respond properly. We have to understand the parts of BEING so we know what to do. The following is copied from my post in salaat section called "Behavioral Programing" .
Below are the 5 phases or every behavioral event.
-
The initaitor of the event which is a situation that comes to the person in the form of a thought, an emotion, an external object, a challenge, etc.
-
A reaction to the situation, which is an Automatic Reflex (not meditated by the conscious part of the brain - a "knee jerk" response), that originates in the subconcious. This reaction is composed of three elements.
a) A Verbal Thought that purports to explain the situation, evalutae it, explain the action to be taken, and why, etc. "Why is this happening to me", "He is so stupid", etc.
b) An Image that shows the potential consequence of the situation, what action to take, etc. "Image of yelling, running away, being sensually involved, etc. "
c) An energy which is teh essence of the emotional component of the reaction.
-
An action or inaction according to the verbal thought, image and energy.
-
The result of the action. There is success of failure (relative or absolute) depending on whether the action was in harmony or not with the physical or social environment and the goal's of the person's life.
-
The emotional sequel to the result of the action. Accordingly there will be pleasure, peace or pain. If there is pleasure with the potential for peace, then tehre will be happiness in the persons life, otherwise there will be unhappiness.
The KEY to the correct outcome of the five chain of events is in the second phase!
We have the ability to REPROGRAM the second part, and this is the purpose of "salaa".
One has to get into the most receptive state in order to be effective in reprogramming. This is the Alpha brain wave state which is the MIDDLE state between being awake and sleep. It is this Medi-state that gives us the word "meditate". It is meditation that allows us to "salaa".
The Word of the God is not useful to us unless we REMEMBER (knee jerk reflex) the Laws of the God (proper behavior) when we get to the crossroads/challenges of life.

Peace be upon you all,
The RESPONSE is also being alluded to in the example teh God gave to Ibrahim where it was shown how The God gives life to the "spiritualy" dead.
Ibrahim was to take FOUR birds, TRAIN THEM, put them on mountains and CALL THEM, they will RESPOND with speed.
Birds and mountains carry great symbolism in the "Koran" as well as older teachings.
The bottom line is that the RESPONSE based on TRAINING is being shown.
-
Peace idol-free and all. I think that is a an excellent analysis in your two posts. Response is free-will and we can respond differently in accordance to our knowledge/experiences'. Re-programming the response according to our knowledge is what makes us learn from our mistakes, and also enables us to make different(better or worse) choices.
Peace all. -
Peace be upon you Enquirer,
Thank you, but I do not take credit for either post, it is just information I have been taught by others.
In any case, I urge you to take this and seriously reflect on it in regards to your life. (all of us) It is really amazing in my opinion. Many people ruin thier lives because an event happens, for example, someone looks at them the wrong way and the subconscious throws up the thoughts and images that we have ingrained in our spirit from movies, Tv, etc and next thing we know, we are in jail for murder.
Thats an extreme example, but has happenned many, many times.
We respond the way we do based on how we have seen our parents respond, neighbors respond, etc.
We have to REPROGRAM ourselves, and the television PROGRAM is not the answer.
This is why those who enter hell will respond "we were not of those who programmed(salaa)."
