    okay my fellow free-minders...most of us have probably been told by christians about the "contradiction" in the book (al kitab) concerning mary being the sister of aaron, though they lived over a millennium apart...

    Qur'an 1927 Then she came to her people carrying him. They said "O Mary, you have come with something totally unexpected!"
    1928 "O sister of Aaron, your father was not a bad man, and your mother was never unchaste!"

    could it be that one day some archaeologist will find evidence that mary was the sister of aaron?
    could "sister" be a title given to her because of her lineage?
    maybe we haven't studied this verse enough...as which was the case with verse 434 the supposed "wife beating" verse.

    i would like your opinions on this.

      PEACE

      I believe the title is given as a lineage back to Aaron. I personally think its very likely back in the days they used to address people like this.

      But using the Quran to answer that question i'll present a few points and then obviously we'll take it from there. I'm not an arabic expert so if i make a mistake then please do correct me;

      akhunor ukhtun carry two meanings from what i can see;

      Blood brother or sister and
      Brotherhood/sisterhood in clan and faith.

      The verse we are discussing uses the word ukhtun. The following examples use the word akhun;

      And his people came rushing towards him, and they had been long in the habit of practising abominations. He said "O my people! Here are my daughters they are purer for you (if ye marry)! Now fear Allah, and cover me not with shame about my guests! Is there not among you a single right-minded man?"

      And unto (the tribe of) A'ad (We sent) their brother, Hud. He said O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Will ye not ward off (evil)?

      And to (the tribe of) Thamud (We sent) their brotherSalih. He said O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. A wonder from your Lord hath come unto you. Lo! this is the camel of Allah, a token unto you; so let her feed in Allah's earth, and touch her not with hurt lest painful torment seize you.

      And unto Midian (We sent) their brother, Shu'eyb. He said O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other Allah save Him. Lo! a clear proof hath come unto you from your Lord; so give full measure and full weight and wrong not mankind in their goods, and work not confusion in the earth after the fair ordering thereof. That will be better for you, if ye are believers.

      Now this is where I get stuck so someone whos familiar with arabic help me out. Do akhun or ukhtun carry the same meanings or are they used exclusively for one to meanbiological brother/sister and the other as a lineage line in the family and not direct brother/sister.

      PEACE

        Peace

        I responded to a similar inquiry made by Ali Sina.

        http//www.geocities.com/fingolfin_hk/Did_Jesus_escape_Crucifixion.html

        I think the answer is quite simple. There may be more to it, till then I shall not speculate.

          Peace be upon you,

          There is no proof whatsoever of these peolple as being Literal, so where are the dates coming from? Thats where the problem stems from. There is a lesson in there somewhere, we have to dig it up.

          What is the root of "Harun"?

            Sister Of Aron = Ukhta Haroona

            Maybe it refers to the 'order' / 'lineage' of Mary and the clan / order she belongs to... As 'benei Yisreel' which came from tribe of "Levi". Her father (Zakaria / Zacharias) was a priest of 'Aaronic Order'..
            The 'Aaronic Order' is a highly respected order by the common (Jewish) folks.. due to their high-above-standard morality and politeness....
            Only member of the 'Aaronic Priest ' can enter the 'Qodesh Ha Qodashim' (Holiest Of Holy)

            And also from Christian Source
            http//askelm.com/restoring/res025.htm

            Recall that Mary was a kinswoman to Elizabeth, the wife of Zacharias who was an Aaronic priest and the father of John the Baptist, and Elizabeth herself was recognized as ?a daughter of Aaron? (Luke 16).

            Maybe 'Ukhta Haroona' are more correctly translated to be "Sisterhood of Aaron" / 'member of Aaronic Sisterhood'.

            Allah knows best...

            Salam / Peace

                Peace be upon you Jafar,

                You said,

                "Only member of the 'Aaronic Priest ' can enter the 'Qodesh Ha Qodashim' (Holiest Of Holy)"

                Is it possible AL-MIHRAB/the sanctuary in the Quran refers to the holy of holies? We are told Mary was in AL-MIHRAB in the Quran. Zakarriya came out to his people from there after communicating with the Lord.

                I look forward to your response.
