Lowering Your Gaze--- What Do You think?

As SAlaam Alaikum,
What do you think of the verse that tells believing men and women to lower their gaze? What do you think is meant by that? Do you believe that Allah is talking about when you feel lust, or just everyday, random contact between the sexes?
I'm wondering becuase I like movies, and I wonder if I am doing anyhting wrong with seeing them....
Even more I want to write a script.....
Do you think the verse is referring to when people aren't gaurding their modesty???

As I understand
My rather lengthy life behind me has brought the experience of myself !!!and others that
LUST is addictive! If you look at a beautifull woman (or man) and see her as a human then there is no gaze!
But if you are projecting your lust within this, it will be addictive and can come to a point that the opposite sex is confronted as smoething else than human beings. Each human being is carrying the SOUL of GOD and should be approached with great respect.
If LUST is taking over, LOWER YOUR GAZE and let it pass.
Then you have to train yourself to get control over it. The essence of our creation is to get hold of our Selfish desires to grow beyond it.

To look steadily, intently, and with fixed attention.
I just always thought it was just "looking"... no matter in which way. wow... you learn something enw everyday. life has just gotten easier for me!

i believe believers should look away if anything in the vicinity is off morals or pricipals, like a woman with a mini skirt and damn beautiful legs lol , same with women, they should not look at a hunk walking or sitting close by, in reality most humans donlt do that, this really proves that the Quran is a book of guidance, it tackles every minute act that can put us in fault against moral and principals
I do this for a long time now, i walk a lot in the streets and in australia you see a lot of hot almost naked women, and truly i straight look into the ground while passing them, i get the urge bad to just have one look but i always now succeed to beat that urge and it only last for a aminute as you pass that person on your way then that person disappears, i love it, great guidance indeed
The trick is to recite this three words in your mind at that time (Aghdid Min Basarak", which simply means lower you vision

My thoughts are that we are to strike our sight beyond the 'rocky' surface of the physical and see the moving spirit in another, like when Musa struck the rock and water ushered forth.
I feel to lower the vision is to see past the ever changing surface and see the eternal spirit.

Yes, I agree that we are being told to transcend the physical of our brothers and sisters. There is a time and place for sexual attraction, but as with any pleasure, it is addictive and destructive when they become the our masters. So we must be disciplined and transcend the emotion of lust.
We all know how sex is used to promote everything, it is a very powerful attractor.

My understanding of that verse is about an attitude and behavior toward the opposite sex. An example of that attitude is in Mary's attitude toward the angel in form of a man and Moses's attitude toward the two ladies in Quran. PLease note in the verse the "guass al bassar" (lowering the gaze) goes hand in hand with "yah'fadhou fouroujahum" (protect their private parts). In other words, it is all about what may lead to unlawful sex. Also, as we can see, you can be fully covered and yet still those in whose heart there is a disease will gaze. I think it is all in the mind.
And God the All-Mighty knows best.

4237-Those who avoid THE GREATER CRIMES AND SHAMEFUL DEEDS
4 31-If ye avoid THE GREAT (THINGS) WHICH YE ARE FORBIDDEN, We will remit from you your evil deeds and make you enter at a noble gate.
53 32-Those who avoid GREAT SINS AND SHAMEFUL DEEDS, Only (falling into) small faults--verily thy Lord is ample in forgiveness.
I don?t think that simply looking at and admiring the opposite sex is forbidden unless you over do it and your gaze/attitude becomes offensive/obscene and causes discomfort for someone.
I totally avoid looking at women who are with their family even if they are extremely attractive, but otherwise I do look at them

It certainly is all, mostly, in the mind. Just look at the word used Abssarihim/Abssarrihin from the root Basara..
The word used is Bassar and not Nathar. Nathar is all about looking, but Bassar involves much more than just using the eyes.Very good point. I have never thought about the difference between nathar and bassar but there is certainly one! I did a quick search on bassar using the super tool of our Brother Burhan-) and it is worth noting verses 7198 to 201. It goes definetely beyond a simple look, there is a sense of wisdom/guidance to grab, in other words, it is about the perception of what is good and what is wrong when faced. And it is also worth noting that it addresses both men and women, which confirms my undestanding of the Quran that there is nothing such as "men are weaker in terms of sexual temptation" and therefore women are the devil!!! (the well known spread theory among most of the traditional schools of thought). It is all about the mentality and what is going in the mind of people in general.
Thank you Sister again for pointing to the difference in the expression, I will reflect more on all those verses inchallah.
