    Peace bro

I believe the arabic word Ightiab means back biting which mainly to talk ill about someone in his/her absence

SHAKIR O you who believe! avoid most of suspicion, for surely suspicion in some cases is a sin, and do not spy nor let some of you backbite others. Does one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? But you abhor it; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah, surely Allah is Oft-returning (to mercy), Merciful.

-_- Ahmed, that in no way answers the question ik was asking. He asked for a definition of the word. I'm sure he is aware of that verse which is why he asked for its definition.

I don't have a definition for you, I would think it is probably defined in some way somewhere else in the Quran. I have to run to class for now though.

well as far as i understood the question, i stated that it means "talking ill about someone in his/her absence", that is the Quran definition according to the verse i posted

I also believe it is defined straight after the underlined sentence " ", which literally means "Would anyone of you like to eat the meat of his dead brother", and that metaphore sounds to me as Ightiab, i.e. back-biting another believer

          peace

          thank for your replies

....but would that be talking ill about a person if it's true? Or talking ill about a person period?

And just to clarify i wanted to know the meaning of back-biting but in the context of the Quran

          thanks again

Back-biting was mentioned once in the Quran in the verse I posted above, as far as I believe the word itself is commonly known and used between the arabs which is Ightiab

I.E. Talking ill about someone IN HIS/HER ABSENCE

the absence is an important factor to constitute the Ightiab

the verse I posted also and clearly after forbidding the Ightiab, asked us if any of us like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?

see that metaphor is simply meaning that a dead brother (in faith) is absent because he is dead and we shopuld not talk ill about him because he is absent

I searched the whole Quran and only found the above verses that talk about Ightiab, I believe that the prophet though explained it in details in the hadith

            Allah knows best

sorry, but i dont care for hadith; It's probably forged in Muhammad's name

And thanks a lot for your reply and the explanation on the 'dead brother' analogy. I compltely understand now.

Do not move your tongue to hasten it.

It is we who will collect it into Quran.

Once we recite it, you shall follow such a Quran.

Then it is We who will explain it.

I don't think Muhammad would disobey the Lord.

              peace !

I don't hold the hadith to the same level I hold the Quran, the hadith for me is nothing but a mere history record, you have to bear in mind that the verse I posted earlier considers Ightiab a major sin, Mohammad will fall under this verse as a brother in faitrh and he is dead i.e. he is absent therefore most of the fabricated hadith that defame him are nothing but Ightiab and should be ignored

i only take from the hadith what is qualified by the Quran verse that Mohammad has possesed an excellent charachter, therefore any hadith that shows the contrary is nothing but Ightiab

                peace bro

yes i agree back-biting is a major sin, understandably so.

But thing about hadith, there are some positive hadith for example that act as if Muhammad knew the future, when he didn't. And besides if any of that God felt was relevant for us he'd have mentioned it in the Quran.

Shall I seek other than GOD as a source of law, when He has revealed to you this book fully detailed? Those who received the scripture recognize that it has been revealed from your Lord, truthfully. You shall not harbor any doubt.

Say, "If the ocean were ink for the words of my Lord, the ocean would run out, before the words of my Lord run out, even if we double the ink supply."

If all the trees on earth were made into pens, and the ocean supplied the ink, augmented by seven more oceans, the words of GOD would not run out. GOD is Almighty, Most Wise.

The Lord's words do not run out, is the point. It is my belief that "Quran is all we need" but to each is own peace bro ! God bless !

Don't take it the wrong way, i know you only use hadith for historical purposes.

Isn't it amazing though that God used the word hadith in the Quran (7185, 12111, 316, 3923, 3927-29, 456-7, 5234, 7750)before the fabricators fabricated what it means now?

                    Mate

The Quran clearly showed that Mohammad has other roles than a post man, if you would like to debate it, i will be happy to do as such and take it bit by bit witout any over whelming mass, we only trying to find the truth as we live 1400 years after him

                    peace bro

Peace all. I wonder whether ghiba(normally translated as backbiting.) means 'talking about someone without proper knowledge of that person'.( ie talking about a particular person based on unknown/unseen/unknowable knowledge or baseless speculation....Is ghiba related to ghayb?) That would make more sense,as i think many, many people talk about others in their absence. Sometimes we have to warn someone about someone else to make them aware of a potential danger in that person...Its not always practical to inform that person while the other person is present. This would make the verse a warning against unfounded opinions against people,or prejudices. The surah in its entirety seems to back this view up.(see 496 also.)
                      Peace.

Peace enquirer. That actually makes a lot of sense. I wonder if there is a etymological connection there with ghayb. I hope an Arabic speaker can add on to the discussion.

                          as i explained before man

Ightiab means to talk ill about someone while that one is Ghaib, i.e. is absent

                            Salaams / peace

Critisizing someone behind their back is termed as back-biting. Being critical of people in front of them is often viewed as being rude or nozy even if one is critical in a seemingly polite way. So how can one honestly explain the problems of others to them without any frictions? Sometimes it can become necessary to talk about the issues of others (directly or indirectly) we don't agree with because many such issues adopted by them can interfere directly with our own lives too .. depending on one's relationship of course. Hope I've made myself clear. So, can it be that sometimes people discuss critical issues of others in their absence to avoid creating unpleasantness or quarrels? Just asking for my own information ..

That is way intention is so important

if you are discussing something with another about a third person who did something bad just to express a point like warning the other peroon etc from falling into a trap etc, and you 100% not intending to defame that person then there is nothing wrong with it

if you really mean to defame that person in his absense even if that person did wrong, then it is Ightiab

i agree it's probably the most practiced sin period.

How we avoid it Avoiding gossip and things like that are pointless and only lead to harm. We should be fair, it's unfair to talk 'stuff' behind somebody's back when they are not there to defend themselves.

                                    Peace folks

Check out http//www.studyquran.co.uk/GYB.htm its listed as #8 on the list. According to the definition, it's talking about someone in their absence, even with truth.

The best way to avoid this if you just need advice about something from someone else, is to leave names out of the conversation. Keep all parties anonymous. In general, people love idle talk and I surely have been guilty of talking for hours about every person me and my friends have ever known... pointing out the good, pointing out the bad. The quran warns us of idle talk and to just walk passed it without comment. When I am conscious of my actions though, I like to leave names out of conversations, specifically when pointing out the bad.
We should pardon each other of any faults, so picking at them with other people wouldn't be a good idea in general.
                                    Great topic
                                    Peace
