Explain 9:29.
-
Salam.
929 Fight those who do not believe in God or the Last Day, and they do not forbid what God and His messenger have forbidden, and they do not uphold the system of truth; from among the people who have been given the Scripture; until they pay the fine, willingly or unwillingly.
I have been talking to some sunnis here and we cannot agree - what God and his messenger have forbidden. The word and is the key issue of the dispute.
I told them that prophet Muhammad can only prohibit stuff he finds in The Quran.
They tell me that he has received sunna and hadith from The Exalted God Most Wise.I need an ayya that will solve this "problem". It's not a problem for me as much as it is for this whole community.
Peace.

Peace Alen,
The verses in context 928-33 are about fighting a conglomeration of pagans, Jews, and Christians who ?believe not in Allah nor the Last Day?, etc. until they are powerless.
?Allah and His Messenger? refer to Qur?an; a clear distinction is made?
Yahlifoona biAllahi lakum liyurdookum waAllahu warasooluhu ahaqqu an yurdoohu in kanoo mumineena
962 To you they swear by Allah. In order to please you But it is more fitting that they should please Allah and His Messenger, if they are Believers.

peace,
Perhaps you can refer them to 661
066.001
YUSUFALI O Prophet! Why holdest thou to be forbidden that which Allah has made lawful to thee? Thou seekest to please thy consorts. But Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
PICKTHAL O Prophet! Why bannest thou that which Allah hath made lawful for thee, seeking to please thy wives? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
SHAKIR O Prophet! why do you forbid (yourself) that which Allah has made lawful for you; you seek to please your wives; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. They tell me that he has received sunna and hadith from The Exalted God Most Wise.
Its likely the people you are discussing with have not even read AQ. Perhaps you can ask them to find an example of the word "hadith" or "sunna" being used to refer to Muhamadd's hadith/sunna in AQ.
I wrote this summary as an introduction to the history of hadith/sunna
http//mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/think-786/Rethinking_Tradition_Modern_Islamic_Thought.htmFrom my experience of these discussions, it greatly depends on the person. If they have a logical/reflective/forethoughtful mindset then you can have a great conversation. Not about accepting each others position, just simply exploring possibilities and weighing up each side.
To get a quick idea about their mindset, ask them if they admit prophet Muhammad was a human being / imperfect. By their reaction you will be able to tell if discussion will be fruitful.

If you join this word and then read the sentence would the meaning and conclusion remain the same?

If I would have already studied it, what was the point in drawing your attention to the comma and the word repent and requesting you to enlighten us whether the conclusion would still be the same or it may somewhat change the position. Requesting for the opinion from a person who has already conducted research does not imply that one will necessarily refute it. Please let us benefit from your study on the subject.
