The plural alrusul is used there.

        Salaam all,

About Noah and his people. I was reading this morning too and I want to ask all who is fluent in Arabic. First, we know that Noah (either you take it literally or not) is a messenger.

We have sent Noah to his people, so he said My people, serve God, you have no god besides Him. I fear for you the retribution of a great Day!

Now, assuming that Noah is a single person, then what is this ayat mean?

And the people of Noah, when they denied the messengers We drowned them, and We made them a lesson for mankind. And We have prepared for the wicked a painful retribution.

When I read it, I see multiple messengers being sent to the people of Noah. So, first of all, is the above translation correct? Is it really multiple messengers instead of one? An answer to this question would probably shed some light to my understanding regarding the issue of Noah. And also, reading from the previous verses do not, according to me, that the multiple messengers include Moses or Aaron for instance. Thanks.

        =adley=

It is a good question actually

the answer is simply as follow, Noah was only sent with a simple message that there is no God but Allah, and those who rejected him must be considered rejecting all the other rusul because this is the main message that was delivered by all, sort of a metaphore indeed

        Allah knows best

        cheers

          Hello All

          Just a quick observation

why Allah selcted Noah out of all the prophets He mentioned and opnly mentioned the period he lasted within his people?,

i can see one explanation only, which is to highlight the lengthy period he stayed within his people calling then to one message "La Ilah Ila Allah"

          peace

it does make sense. From Surah Noah you can clearly see that Noah tried every single way possible. so yes, i do believe he lived 950 years as God willed it. Isn't Noah also one of the earlier messengers?

And we granted him (Abraham) Isaac and Jacob, and we guided both of them. Similarly, we guided Noah before that, and from his descendants (we guided) David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron. We thus reward the righteous.

So Noah came before Abraham, and David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses and Aaron were Noah's descendants. I would say Noah was one of the earliest messengers, so life span back them could have been much longer than it is now.

And also his age being mentioned of Noah's and not others also signifies how hard Noah tried. And for how long. How steadfast he was.

Noah is not necessarily one of the earliest messengers, though earlier than our own messengers Noah is. There have been many rusul over the years of our stay here in this world, sometimes one, usually more than one at a time to one nation. Jibreel mentioned that He has not named some messengers.

And also his age being mentioned of Noah's and not others also signifies how hard Noah tried.

One can try harder at doing something in a short period of time than another who has also tried hard over a longer period of time. I do not think the period of time assigned to Noah signifies how hard Noah has tried. Noah has basically been met with the same response as other rusul have been met with.

Predictionsomeone will claim that this is an 'allegory' of some sort

So what if someone does or does not? Why belittle people? Giving the insult before they have a chance to give their views, if they happen to take this as allegorical, does not make what you have done right.

              Joe

I never said Noah was one of the earliest as a sure thing, I thought he was. Do you know for sure that he wasn't? What are your sources? One is allowed to think/speculate aren't they? Are you expecting everyone to agree to YOUR point of view? Come on..

Okay then, you tell me why Noah lived 950 years? (not being sarcastic)

Didn't mean to insult or belittle anyone. If I insulted anyone I truly apologize. I never said that someone's view of this verse in particular as allegorical as a BAD thing. Not my view, but doesn't make it right or wrong good or bad.

And what have I done exactly?

                  Peace All,

Interesting thread. I have a few thoughts for both sides of the argument...

First, I've read in a number of places that the human body is completely re-generated every 7 years. In essence, every cell in your body dies and a new one replaces it over the course of 7 years. So, an 80 year-old person does not have 80 year-old cells, but no more than 7 year old cells that 'learned' to appear aged. It would be good if some of our scientific/medical members can confirm or deny this with reference. If this stands as true, then essentially, age is "learned" and not a fact of life. But then, this would contradict the qur'anic verse(help?) that states God grants us knowledge and then takes it away as we age.

If this can be reconciled, then it stands to reason that a person given the proper insight and mental strength could certainly live as long as God willed.

                  Peace,

Yes, we know now through Quantum Biology, that these things are maybe possible. Through new research we know now that it is not 7 years, but for every type of cells it is different. Some cells regenerate every two days even. Now they're researching people who needs glasses if they can learn their eye cells to 'heal' themselves, i have read about one person doing this, to bad one person is not convincing the medical world. The body has powers that are unbelievable. One researcher commented in his notes, that 'the ages mentioned in the Bible are not that unbelievable any more'. Still i'm carefull with this. As also i need a bit more proof on understanding that verse.

                  Peace

I never said Noah was one of the earliest as a sure thing, I thought he was.

You did say he was one of the earliest whether you were certain or not. I'm sure next time you'll be more detailed when you say what you mean. I believe my statement would be the same even if you had mentioned that you were uncertain.

I would say Noah was one of the earliest messengers

Do you know for sure that he wasn't?

I did not say that Noah was not one of the earliest for sure.

                    What are your sources?

What are your's that you would accuse me of saying this?

One is allowed to think/speculate aren't they?

I'd encourage this, but I do not think all people are allowed to think depending on the enviroment in which they have their abiding place.

Are you expecting everyone to agree to YOUR point of view?

                    I did not say this.

Okay then, you tell me why Noah lived 950 years?

No, besides, I did not say Noah lived 950 years.

And what have I done exactly?

It seems you have understood what you did.

The word "sana" does not necessarily have to mean a solar year of 365 days.

If we assume Noah was a human being, then your interpretation would mean that he lived 365 x 950 days??

There is also the word "a'am" in the same verse.

The verse says he lived among his people for 950 "sana" minus 50 "a'am"

                      Does "sana" = "a'am". ?

There is a possibility that the word "sana" describes a periodic motion of any heavenly body other than the sun, that the people of Noah's era used to mark the passage of time.

It's true the movement of the Earth in it's orbit around the Sun once every 365 days is described as a "year".

But , we can also accept that the rotation of the Earth around it's own axis once every 24 hours is in fact a "sana".

Likewise, the stages of the moon ( from full moon to new moon ) , which we call a "month" may also be described as a lunar "sana".

Consider this equation. Noah lived for 950 cycles of the moon ( 950 lunar sanas ) , minus 50 "a'ams" ( solar sanas ).

If each solar "sana" ( a'am ) is made up of 12 lunar "sanas", the equation would be

                      950 / 12 = 79.167 - 50 = 29.167.

This means Noah lived among his people for approximately 29 years. D

                      Just my theory...

2914 And We had sent Noah to his people, so he stayed with them one thousand less fifty years. Then the flood took them while they were wicked.

So he lived till the age of 950, did our ages deteriorate (sp?) over time? What are you guys' thoughts?

Predictionsomeone will claim that this is an 'allegory' of some sort

                        An allegory indeed,

                        ????, ?? ???? ???, ??? ??? ??????, ????; ????
And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died
                        (Genesis 929)

This text is not refering to a person, but a period of time. The name of this era is "rest" or "comfort", hebrew Noach. Though I cannot see why the author of this verse writes that it was after Noah's death that the flood came, since he was on it.

                            Salam Darbaari

You stated that 950 years ( Believed to be the age of Noah as per 2914) is not against Sunnatullah .

                            i sure did .

Do you honestly Think that 'The people of Noah were given that Longevity by GOD' ,...

why do u need to ask "do u honestly think?" ?! (thats Enquirer's sunnat) . and when did i say anything about people of Noah living 950 years . Koran only mentions Noah living 950 years .

then He sets out to give The People of Ahmad/Muhammad an average age of 65-70 years ? Isn't that an In-Justice and Discrimination ?

no injustice . according to the Koran , Allah has blessed some people more than others . now THAT is the sunnatullah .

and sorry for the really late reply .

                              Peace brother Tay, all,

First, I've read in a number of places that the human body is completely re-generated every 7 years.

I agree with brother Arnold that some cells of the body are re-generated every few days. Red Blood Cells have an average life span of 120 days. Stomach lining cells have a life span of 2 days. Most central neurons however do not regenerate and some of them can last an entire life time.

Following article sheds light on how it is possible to lengthen life spans of humans scientifically and how human life spans of 900+ years are scientifically possible and plausible
