1:6

The straight path is defined in 6150-160, and it is a set of deeds more or less similar to the Ten Commandments. Either is correct, but think, can you go TO a path? Or do you go along the path?

peace nerspi, all,
A few points of interest
16 Ihdina <here> alssirata almustaqeema
In the Arabic of 16 there is no "ila" <here> which could have easily been used to mean "to". One could say "to" is implied but just as easily say it isn't.
"guide us along" would imply we are already on such a path, when I dont think this is necessarily the case for all.
"guide us to" would imply we are not on the path at the moment, when I dont think this is necessarily the case for all.
So, in real life, it could be either. Perhaps this is why it is left open.
As a contrast, there is an "ila" in the following usage
...wa (and) ihdina (guide/direct us) ila (to) sawai (even) alssirati (path)
Interestingly, in the above usage the two disputants were not guided/directed at the time of asking, thus "ila" / "to" is appropriate here.
However, since 16 is phrased as a petition/request, it could still imply "to" in my opinion.
Ideally a conjunctive word incorporating both meanings. Some translations eliminate the use of a conjunctive, e.g. "Show us the straight way" by Yusuf Ali.

Salaam all
Since the caller recognizes God and that He is the one to ask, I would say they are necessarily already on the path. The first commandment of the Straight Path is to "Not set partners beside God".

exactly, so it's ok to say 'along' instead of 'to'?

sorry but i have yet another question
if 16 would be 'along', then would the meaning of 17 change?
16 Guide us along the straight path.
17 The path of those whom You have blessed, not those who have incurred the wrath, nor the misguided.something seems different here.
ok if it would be 'to' instead of 'along' it would make sense to me, because it would mean we're in between and asking to be guided on a particular path (the straight one), but that would also imply that i don't recognize the path i'm already on as the straight one... but i do
so if it's 'along' then it would be like asking God to guide us along one path and not guide us along the other, and that would imply that He guides people on the other path too, but where does He guide them to?
i don't get it, maybe i don't understand english very well, i'm sorry, but could someone please explain this to me?
