I forgot to mention one another thing. There's a difference between a submitter (muslim) The verses that talk about observing salat are for the Mumins.
Muslims are the ones who submit to the laws of the Almighty. Then once they get good at that, they progress to become 'faithful'. Mumin get raised to higher ranks in the hereafter.Your questions should be answered here

Specifically the 3 compulsory acts include
- Standing (25.64)
- Bowing (48.29)
- Prostrating (both 25.64 and 48.29)
BTW the order of facing the Ka'aba is in 2144 and also continued in 2149 and 2150.
about disobeying allah, i think it is those SPECIFIC LAWS in the quran which is beneficial and often ignored, which leads to human failure and demise.
Exactly. We know that God is not in need of us. Which means anything he tells us to do is for our own good! Remember God wants us to win in the end. Quran is our guide towards victory. So whenever I see a law in the Quran that's how i look at it If it benefits me then I ask how? That's really important in helping us surrender to the laws of the Almighty.

That is why we do salaat - so that God may redeem us all. We received words from him, seven most-repeated verses which every Muslim includes in his salaat to God. They make up the first chapter of the Qur'an, Al Fateha(The Opening.) Its believed that Adam received same words from God. Because Adam built originally the first place of prostration(which is now the ka`bah) it would make sense that they are the same or similar words of that which he had received.

I don't think it is a good article at all. Too many assumptions based on hadith.The word Al Salaat in `arabic comes from the word "to link"(el salawa) which is what Muslims understand salaat to be; a link between God and Man. This link refers to, obviously, a spiritual link instead of a physical one.
OK. Why not take that as a base to understand Salaat.
The author goes back to the traditional meaning of "prayer" and starts again from there. Why?
If you can't break away from corrupt hadith interpretations, if you can't understand the quran through it's context, you will never know what it's talking about. -

yeah this is definitely traditional and hadith based. Quran tells us that Abraham (w/ his son) built it.

why do we have trouble understanding the basic message in the quran? what could we do to gain a better understanding of the quran issues concerning salat, and etc...
Our activities are not without purpose/meaning/benefit. When we understand why we have to do a thing, it will become easy to comprehend how we have to do it.
Allah is talking to intelligent creatures and the language is very simple - all we need to do is to understand why we have to pray then we will know the best way to do it.

- Edges of the day are the times of sunrise and sunset, so I am not clear what this repition means?

TARAF means a side of a thing in which case the edge is the extreme end of the side.
When I divide the day into two sides, I have the left as well as the right sides which I could refer to as Left Taraf and Right Taraf accordingly.
The verse you quoted above mentioned ATRAF and not TARAFAYN like in the other verse of Timing.
If we divide the day into 3 parts, we have ATRAF. If you interprete the ATRAF to mean after the Prostrations as it is mentioned in the other verse, then you get the interpretation as follows Glorify Allah during the 3 Salaat and after the 3 Salaat.

An interesting read...I only disagree with the final section on the # of units as they have been explained in the Scripture as being 2 (1 if shortened).

not necessarily they can be more than 2. IMO At least 2 (depending on circumstances). I think just 5 minutes isn't asking a lot for GOD ALMIGHTY. The quran tells us that in the case of war they shortened their salat, but is that shortage in time? or units?
Glorify Allah during the 3 Salaat and after the 3 Salaat.
My understanding is you glorify God as much as you can, while sitting down, laying down, on your sides, etc... Constantly remembering God and Glorifying him. Since that guards us against evil and puts us in the best place to do righteous works etc.....

But does it really says that we shall bow down physically? And what good does that do to you? To bow down physically it feels like I'm doing idolworship of the ground or something else around me.
But to bow down with my soul is different, haven't you heard of that sayings, I have laid down the whole of my soul into this....
And I must say that I agree with Layth about his new findings, I have myself had this understandings for awhile but don't share it with someone. But I was thinking that the night timings was for the mumins not for the muslims. So I had had this understandings of 2 salat times for muslims.

I'm leaning more towards 2 salat times than 3. but i havn't decided yet. But again, knowing the times is useless if we don't know what salat is. -

Excellent ijtihad on your part. By breaking down the arabic in the aya you have made it quite simple for others to understand exactly how many salawat are needed during the daytime hours. To me, its both MENTAL and PHYSICAL. I am NOT worshipping the ground, I am worshipping GOD. The act of bowing and prostrating are ways of showing my submission to God. Tell me when in the Quran it says on the Day of resurrection
A. All the angels will be kneeling
B. Whoever God is speaking to will fall prostrate... is this not physical?

yes, i read Wakas's article.
I think what Damon (right?) says about Salat being different things depending on context is correct. Kind of like the whole Jinn thing.
I always thought that Salat was anything that you do to "connect" with God.
What Kyle says about the importance of the timings being sunrise and sunset makes sense. That's why i think the 2 time salat makes more sense.what soul2squeeze said about Omeiza's interpretation I can't comment on since it has to do with the arabic of the verses.
What does "glorify" have to do with "salat?" -
also, i don't think prostrating is physical.
It's a metaphor for obeying/submitting. physical prostration does nothing to your INNER self, the part that counts. It is only to SHOW others. Your physical prostration can be a lie, your mental prostration cannot be. -

MY phsyical prostration does nothing to MY inner-self.
However, to me MY physical prostration helps me grow inside.

I agree no-one should pray in front of people to show off. That's strictly called out in the Quran.

Alright these set of verses put an end to 'no physical prostation' theory
343 "O Mary, be devoted to your Lord and prostrate and kneel with those who kneel.
2125 And We have made the Sanctuary to be a model for the people and a security. And they took the location of Abraham to make the bond. And We had entrusted to Abraham and Ishmael "You shall purify My Sanctuary for those who visit, those who are devoted, and for those who kneel and prostrate."
3113 They are not all the same, from the people of the Scripture are a nation that is upright; they recite God's revelations during the night and they prostrate.
4102 And if thou are with them and you maintain the bond for them, then let a group from amongst them stand with you and let them bring their weapons; and when they have prostrated then let them stand guard from behind; and let a group who has not yet bonded come and bond with you, and let them be wary and let them bring their weapons with them. The rejecters hope that you would neglect your weapons and goods so they can come upon you in one blow. There is no sin upon you if you are impeded by rainfall, or if you are ill, that you place down your weapons. And be wary. God has prepared for the rejecters a humiliating retribution.
That verse puts the end to 'no physical prostration' view. That is a demonstration of a real life salat taking place (in time of war).
7117 And We inspired Moses "Throw down your staff;" and it swallowed what they invented.
7118 Thus the truth was set, and what they did was made of no effect.
7119 They were thus defeated there and then, and they turned in disgrace.
7120 And the magicians went down prostrating.
7121 They said "We believe in the Lord of the worlds."
