Why Not All Three????
-
peace bro,
o Damon discussing slw?
I'm sure you know my view already, but the core meaning of slw means "go/turn towards" (see 7531-32) and since every occurrence of it in 'al quran' is positive, we can expand on this basic meaning to
"go/turn towards in a close/positive manner"
This is pretty much a fact. Not only does this core meaning fit in every occurrence, it is also supported by slw's various Classical Arabic meanings.
For better readability, i chose "bond".
if one ponders upon this word, and considers how one bonds to/with something/someone, one should come to some very interesting insights and hopefully clarify their approach to "salat".

Peace,
I believe it are 4, as i also believe salaat refers to implying the rules of the Quran, as salaat also means following closely, as in refering following the Quran. This concept is forgotten many times. So it would mean the above 3, plus following/implying the Quran and it's rules, as in creating the Divine System. Then which one or two is meant in a verse depends on the context.

Yeah, I sorta couldn't resist... ;D

Yes Wakas, based upon some recent pondering, reflecting and conclusions I've come to recently, if I were to settle on just one word it would definately be Bond.
Please allow me to elaborate a little bit with a similitude of my own.
You may have two people who have decided to date and see each other. They hope to establish some sort of bond with one another. After some time, they establish this bond. They may not be around each other 24/7 but the bond is definately there. At any given time during the day they can each do some self reflection of what the other person means to them. However, this bond becomes stronger and more established when they make it a point to make the time to be together and enjoy one anothers company. It even actually reaches a point where their bond with one another reaches a very Intimate level, if you know what I mean.
So throughout the day, while pursuing my normal activities (work, school, family, social life, etc.) I can remind myself about my Bond with GOD, but at the times of fajr and 'eshaa, I will make it a point to make the time bond with GOD on a more intimate level. During these times I focus strictly on GOD and nothing else and strengthen my Bond with GOD. I do this through reading and reflecting on the quran, through du'a and through re-affirming my commitments to GOD. I believe it can be one or the other or all three during my personal one-on-one time (Bonding) with GOD.
Please keep in mind that I am applying this particular understanding only to those verses of the quran which speak of the salaa' as a timed book/decree. I believe this understanding fits the context of those particular verses.

Peace arnoldyasin,
Actually I include that understanding in the part that I consider to be commitments. What I have placed in bold in your statement above is what I understand to be the commitments. I see the commitments as implying the rules of the Quran, as salaat also means following closely, as in refering following the Quran.

Peace,
I missed that. Then we agree on three.....

peace Damon,
If I may expand upon your analogy... if one has a bond with someone/something, it makes one act differently also. If the bond is important to them, one acts in such a way to preserve & strengthen that bond. This is a natural thing and one that is ongoing. This is a powerful component of "salat", and it is this aspect that is expanded upon in many many ayatin/signs of 'al quran'. For example, 2241, 2945, 1187.
For example, in your analogy, a bond one has with their partner would make one act in such a way to preserve and strengthen that bond. Whether it be not cheating on them with someone else, giving them a gift from time to time, being kind to them, thinking of them before you do anything that may jepordise the bond you have, asking for forgiveness if you do something bad etc. Many acts can be done to "uphold the bond".

Yes, I agree with you 100% and I believe you what you have just explained is meant in the verse that says the salaa' protects one from evil and vice (2945).

Peace all,
in the poll layth put up i hesitated between bond and commitment. Finally chose commitment because it means an effort that you undertake... be it to cherish a bond, to fulfill an obligation...
A bond can be always there - and we all have a bond to the divine, to other people and so on - but that doesn't mean that we respect this bond and do something positif for it.
Just my 2p...
