    salam/peace

What is required for marriage, using al quran?

    As far as i know

    1. 2 witnesses? (basing it on memory) is this correct? What number of witnesses, would you mind posting the verse/verses?

    2. Dowry is required. As far as i know there's no minimum/maximum. And it can be agreed upon and paid later?

    3. I have heard that the marriage should be public, what if there is a problem that from one side there would be NO family invited? So a public marriage is not best for the couple involved....

    4. Anything else i am missing?

    5. a -Where do sunnis get the 'wali' idea and the parents MUST approve idea? b - any basis in the quran?

p.s. also.... if you don't mind posting similar threads

    thank you and God bless

        Salam,

I have read through all of these verses about marriage in Quran and I don't found so many rules about it.

I couldn't find anything about witness to view the cermony and the wage or dowry it can be whatever u like and can afford to the bride.

For me it seems like a marriage is a relationship u have in a legal way and it must be meant to last for a long time but we know that God is merciful and allows us to get an divorce if we cannot co-operate and live a peaceful life together for some reasons.

My understanding is that God leaves it open for us to arrange a weading feast or whatever we like but it is not an obligation.

To announce that I want to marry her and she want to marry me and to give some dowry is enough as God as a witness.

But to have people as witness and to make an marriage certification is for your own safety and how you like things to be made for u and in the country u lve in.

        Peace sis Maria

I think that the most important thing in marriage is that people who are around you understand that you are wife and husband, not just flatmates or acquintances; i.e. they know that there is committment.

The rest depends on your faith and how you treat each other.

Then of course the state should also know (making this relation official), because that's how rights are preserved. Of course this depends on where you live. In the West, in general, this is becoming less important.

            Peace All

Very interesting topic, nice work Bro Imran )

I'm also confused as to what exactly are the quranic laws and what are the traditions and cultural norms regarding marriage.

I have a question relating to this same topic would 2 people be considered married in front of God if their parents don't know but everyone else does? Let's say for example, friends, co-workers, etc all know but because of circumstances the families don't know as of yet.

Also, do two people really need a paper to state they are married for God to witness their marriage?

            Peace

              peace s2s and all

first of all thanks so much sis maria, s2s and samia for your responses. God bless you !

              s2s

the parents don't need to know if the two of you getting married/or are married if you are independent. Which from what i can tell you are. So if everybody else knows, or many do then yes you are married in front of God

Also, do two people really need a paper to state they are married for God to witness their marriage?

i dont think so, u should do that eventually.. but as long as the public knows (as they do in your case) you don't need a paper. Marriage is a contract remember again aimed at protecting one another. God witnesses all things, paper is not for him its for us.

YUSUFALI There is no blame on you if ye make an offer of betrothal or hold it in your hearts. Allah knows that ye cherish them in your hearts But do not make a secret contract with them except in terms Honourable, nor resolve on the tie of marriage till the term prescribed is fulfilled. And know that Allah Knoweth what is in your hearts, and take heed of Him; and know that Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Forbearing.
PICKTHAL There is no sin for you in that which ye proclaim or hide in your minds concerning your troth with women. Allah knoweth that ye will remember them. But plight not your troth with women except by uttering a recognised form of words. And do not consummate the marriage until (the term) prescribed is run. Know that Allah knoweth what is in your minds, so beware of Him; and know that Allah is Forgiving, Clement.
SHAKIR And there is no blame on you respecting that which you speak indirectly in the asking of (such) women in marriage or keep (the proposal) concealed within your minds; Allah knows that you win mention them, but do not give them a promise in secret unless you speak in a lawful manner, and do not confirm the marriage tie until the writing is fulfilled, and know that Allah knows what is in your minds, therefore beware of Him, and know that Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing.

the red part is wanna be sure about.it says, term and writting in different translations.
term sounds like, after they divorce and need to wait the prescribed time.which is the one i think it is,not 100% sure...
and writting sounds like marriage contract.
can anyone help me out with this, thanks alot in advance
                    take care

ok im back, u were wrong, the thing is,with quran u have to read all together to get the message, and this is the case with this verse, which i went to check it after replying before, and i found the verse before it was answering the question, and all for being lazy and looking myself.i seek refuge in allah from lazyness!

2234 And for those of you who pass away and leave widows behind, then their widows will have a required interim period of four months and ten days. So when they reach their required interim, then there is no sin upon you for what they do to themselves equitably. And God is Expert to what you do.
2235 And there is no sin upon you if you openly propose marriage to these women, or you keep it between yourselves. God knows that you will be thinking of them, but do not meet them secretly, unless you have something righteous to say. And do not consummate the marriage until the required interim is reached in the Scripture. And know that God knows what is in your souls, so be aware of Him, and know that God is Forgiving, Compassionate.

so the term is that period of 4 months 10 day the quran talks about......
                        thanks anyway imram
