    Peace

No, I'm not sure I've heard of that one, or more truly seen such a statement with my own eyes. The praised one was ignorant of divine precepts in my opinion.

      Salam.

Excuse me but we're getting off the subject here. The title of this subject is clear and no one is providing any answers.
I have read in the Qur'an that Allah Most Powerful says that there is evidence in the Injeel that the next messenger will be the one who won't be able to read or write.

      Am i right or wrong?
      Allah Most Merciful knows best.
      Salam.

      Peace,

You are wrong. And 'ummy' refers to non-scripture people, not that he couldn't read or write....And off topic?????? It is Phoenix's thread, and he quoted some 'proofs' which i commented, please don't off-topic things when it is certainly not....

        Salam Alen,

I believe that the prophet can read and write.

This is an article in free-minds regarding the prophet's illiteracy.

          Peace Phoenix,

          peace be upon you all,

As we all know, the hadith make muhammad (our messenger) look like some evil person. The only reason the messenger cannot be evil is if all of those hadith were wrong. Can they all be wrong? I don't think so. I don't think they are all fabricated. I think that who the hadith talk about wasn't really the messenger.
I think the Quran was written a few decades, or even centuries before 570 AD. Then this person, or a group of people come along and the manipulation of the Quranic words begin.
They took "mecca" from the quran and turned it into Holy Mecca.
"kaaba" was turned into Holy Kaaba.
"masjid al haram" was turned into The Holy Majsid Al Haram.
In the same way, their leader may have adopted the title "Muhammad" or "the one with praise."
And he became the beloved Muhammad we know today.

This is just a hypothesis, of course. Nothing too serious. Just wanted to share my thoughts.
          peace

I think due to high degree of fabrications, it has become extremely hard to ascertain which hadiths are close to the truth. Let's take a look at WTC attack. The event took place not more than 10 years from now, yet there are so many versions of hadiths regarding it which are hard to ascertain. I am personally not sure whether OBL is a real person or not. This is in the era in which people have technologies such as internet, cameras, etc. How about the hadiths whose time gap is 250 years?

Btw regarding "Muhammad", my quran reading leads me to have feeling that "Muhammad" is a general description instead of a definite person 1400 years ago. The name of the messenger who received quran is Ahmad. I don't know if some of you guys have the same feeling as mine. Based on this, the hypothesis of Phoenix seems reasonable (that "some" people just borrowed the title "Muhammad" for their goals - please also read my analogy with WTC attack above). Just want to share my feelings and please CMIIW.

            Peace,

I heard that Muhammad is not a name..a description means The praiseworthy one or Praised Person. But maybe just maybe, this is totally my opinion,i think God chose to not use the prophet's name but description to show us the identity of the prophet was not impt or relevant but the message is impt and God is most impt,as too much focus on humans could lead us away frm the message.just a thought.

            Salam bros and sis

                Salam.

I think that it's not even important if Muhammad wrote the Qur'an with his own hand or if he ordered his friends to write it down, what is important, is that we follow IT.

                salam.

Also, all arabic names have meanings. it doesn't necessarily mean they don't refer to real people

Muhammad tells the Katib (secretary) verses and the the katib wrote what Muhammad said. But it was not mean Muhammad is illiterate.

                        Hello All

I?m not going to agree or disagree regarding te word ?Ummi? however in the following verse we read

And you did not recite before it any book, nor did you transcribe one with your right hand, for then could those who say untrue things have doubted.

                        (4

-> Clearly it says ? ?, ? And you did not recite before it any book,?, i.e. Mohammad never read a book before, then it says ? ?, ? nor did you transcribe one with your right hand?, while this means that Mohammad may or may not be literate, what follows next indicates that he was illiterate ? ?, ? for then could those who say untrue things have doubted.?, i.e. Mohammad was illiterate before the revelation of the Quran because if he was literate, the people at his time would have doubted him

                        Salam

The direct object in the phrase (? ?, ? nor did you transcribe one ) does not refer to the qur'aan, as you know. It does not necessarily imply that he did not write down the qur'aan , as it cannot imply he did not read the qur'aan after it was written either. In fact, what it says is Mohammad neither read nor had he written a book BEFORE. When you say I never did this before, it would emply that this is your first time.

If he was illiterate, how was he able to check that the qur'aan was written correctly? How did he, for example, made sure that (in the name of God) ( ) should be written without an "alif", but should be written with an alif elsewhere, as in ( )? The examples are many. In fact, believing that Mohammad was illiterate does much more harm, as it opens the door wide to allegations that there are errors in the Qur'aan.

                            I agree again

When you say I never did this before, it would emply that this is your first time.

                            I agree

possibly he became literate after the Quran revelation or possibly halfway down the revelation, i really don't know nor it will matter to me

How did he, for example, made sure that (in the name of God) ( ) should be written without an "alif", but should be written with an alif elsewhere, as in ( )? Well, as I said he might became literate after the Quran revelation or half way through it

but what I'm sure about that Allah was the one in charge in collecting it and compiling it as He told us, the humans did the job during Uthman time and Mohammad was not really living during that time, so for Mohammad to qualify it during Uthman is invalid, at the end of the day Allah was the one who guided whoever to collect it and compile it in one book

                            Cheers

Al Kitab is not necessarily equal to Book. KItab = kataba = promulgate a law.

Muhammad before getting spirit from Allah, never recite or transcribe Kitab, as his Kitab was Abu Jahal's kitab.

                                    Peace bro "AB" and all,
Yes these are marvellous points brought up here and ive thought about the verse you brought up too. Maybe Prophet Muhammad was literate before the rev of Quran but didnt have pratice with a book/scripture neither did he write one before OR better yet he never actually wrote a book or story like most of the poets were doing at that time but he did have the ordinary understanding of the letters and could read and write. This would explain it, i guess. GOD Bless!
