        Salaam Waleed,

In my country, the physical will appear due to the nature of the prostration which literally bang your forehead into the ground. Not that hard, but you can feel the pain if you're not used to doing it. The mark will appear after we do it long enough. Besides the 5 prayer, all the Sunnah ones are done with that exciting method of prostration as well.

It is pathological (kind of fungus) and is caused by prostrating on the ground without cleaning afterwards (just like what might happen to the feet); or prostrating on a rough surface (straw mats) where fungus build in the small layers. It could occur after a short period of prayers. Have you asked yourself why women do not have it? Because they do not pray outdoors, and they take care to prostrate on a soft mat so that they do not have any undesirable marks. This means one can avoid it.

As for the verse, the word " " does not translate into "marks". It is better translated into "characteristics", which is not a tangible thing.

            Peace be upon you,

I did all the raditional "prayers" when I was sunni and I never got any mark on my forehead. I cannot confirm if it is fungus or banging your forehead or rubbing it with sandpaper. But I know that placing your head on the ground just by itself does not give and "rug burn" on your forehead.

As was stated, the "mark" implies characteristics, not a literal mark.

Mark of a religious MAN - yes ) because i never saw a woman with it !

i prayed 5 times a day for 15 years and never got this mark...just some redness or pressure marks that vanished a few minutes after

i know many people here that pray five times a day - they don't have the mark

the one that have "sbiba" around here are the ikhwan al muslimin, political muslim brotherhood...they have not only the marks but the beards, jellaba and everything that goes with it

My guess they use onion or garlic and rub their foreheads...this would explain the smell... another guess mostly men go to the mosque - so may be the floor is not clean and they forget to wash "after" the prayers...

ok, i guess you understood that i don't like them...

              Peace
              lk

                peace all,
for all you ex muslims out here, what's the deal with the mark on the forehead the old religious men get? I was told that it happens when you pray 5 times a day regularly and never miss a prayer.

                Salam.

I have a friend in Frisco and he has a mark on his forehead from all the prostrating.
I pray 3 times a day and i only have the marks on my ankles when i am in the sitting position.
I also feel my leg muscles have become stronger because i often get up from prostrating without the help of hands. Sometimes.

                Salam.

                    Salam,

well we surely know muhammad and his companions never probably had the comfort of a mat at many times in their lives.THey were out at war,and in the desert travelling for business etc.So it is highly likely, prostration on the desert sand and rough ground, though clean, could have contributed to most of them having the scars due to prostrations. It is nothing to do with whoever has the scar is religious, but it happens to be a way of recognising muhammad and his companions at those times as they could be distinguished by the "mark", just merely by looking at them, as the pagan arabs probably prostrated even to their idols much much less frequently than muhammad prostrated to God.Salam..just some of my thoughts.

                      Peace be upon you Matinbhagat,

I dont care if they prostrated on razor blades, you can still do so without getting marks. Its not rocket science, yuo can verify for yourself. These people were convinced hat this mark makes you "Holy", so they get rough with thier foreheads to look pious. Thats all that is going on here.
