Tajweed

Hello .....
I have been hearing about 'Tajweed' especially so in the thread started by someone called Jim where he wanted to add music to the Quran. God said read 'iqrah' right? So what it is with Tajweed? Does one need to sing out melodically? If so, it is even in the Quran?
Don't add music ...add music...
confusedpeace and love..

Salam,
Traditionally, Tajweed of the Quran is the knowledge and application of the rules of recitation so the reading of the Qur'an is as the Prophet Mohammed recited it. The same pauses, inflection and pronounciation is supposedly passed down from generation to generation and there are strict guidelines to follow. This is why when you hear the Quran recited the "melody" sounds the same. You will find that the way the words are pronounced in Tajweed rules is sometimes very different then how one would expect the words to be spelled in the Quran.
Traditionally, the reason for Tajweed rules is to Guard the Quran and preserve it from distortion. The story goes that the Arabs mixed with non-Arabs after the spread of Islam, and the Muslims feared that the Arab tongue would become corrupted with this intermixing. It then became mandatory for rules to be put down that would preserve the recitation of the Qur'an from mistakes, and guarantee the reader of the Qur'an integrity of pronunciation.
Please note This information is based on tradition. I am not citing Quran verses or giving you this information based on what I have read in the Quran.
At this time I have not personally searched the Quran to verify this information.

This is an interesting discussion.
I propose that the so-called 'tajweed rules' of recitation of the Qur'an are not mandated by the Qur'an but are the manufacture of faked hadiths dating to about 300 years after the death of the Prophet.
What are the thoughts of people on this forum? Tajweed or not to tajweed, that is the question...

Peace,
I was actually trained to "Tajweed" and I still practice it, and find it spiritually uplifting.
However, that does not mean the practice is correct. I just try to take what I can spiritually from it, and accept that the Qur'an can be read in any way so long as the meaning is not intentionally distorted.
