There's this movement, I think probably in the states, where women are opting for laws to allow them to go topless too. Men do it of course when they're hot and playing sports so it seems sensible for the women to be allowed to do so too. They can only pop out a breast when breast feeding here in the U.S.

    Salam.

I think they will allow that eventually but what about those rapists they have there? What when they come from jail?
    You know?
I can't be for that cuz in the Quran The God tells women to cover their bosoms, correct? There is a reason women were given this order.

I can hold myself but there are lots of them out there who can't.
    Sadly.

    Peace.

      Peace,

I also was (or still am) a bit confused about how a woman is supposed to cover up. I mean the way women used to dress in the old times is not the same as how women dress nowadays. I don't think that there is a certain rule of how women are supposed to cover up (although I do believe the bossom is a necessary part to cover up), aslong as they look decent. And the question ofcourse than is what is decent? Everybody has his own interpretation of what decent is. Some may say that tight jeans is not decent, some may claim that a short skirt or a sleeveless top is not decent, but in my own opinion these things are very decent. The opinions differ and this also has to do with someone's background.

My female Carribean friends for example like to dress (as how I see it) in very sexy and provocative clothes (very short miniskirt and low cleavage). And it's not only their way of dressing that comes accross as provocative, but their behaviour. The way they look at men and use their sexual attraction to catch a man's interest. It's, how I like to call it, a Carribean "thing". So my conclusion is that a little nudity doesn't always have to be wrong or seen as undecent, but it's most of the time about the behaviour of a woman. It's the way a woman carries herself. It also has to do with the background of woman. A woman from the Carribean who is used to wear very little clothes in her original country, may dress the same way as she did in her country when living in Europe. This might be seen as undecent by Europeans, but to this Carribean woman it can be considered as very normal.

Where and when do you cross a line?

it seems like your female carribean friends are not muslims and i think you're wrong about your conclusion is that a little nudity isn't wrong. yes it is. your female carribean friends shouldn't do that, but i understand since they're not muslim, they don't believe in afterlife and these types of people have this thing to get the most out of this life as possible, but that's still wrong. they shouldn't use sexual attraction to get a man's attention, this is not why we're here, these women should get to know a man based on his inside and a man should get to know a woman based on her inside and see if they are compatible and then spend their lives together, we're not here to attract each other sexualy and have sex and then go our seperate ways, we're not animals. so your female friends shouldn't do that and if you have male friends that do that it is also wrong, they shouldn't.

and like i said nudity is supposed to be between a husband and wife.

and the question still stands, should men also cover themselves,
i don't remember reading exact words in the Qur'an but i think we have to cover ourselves too.

it always depends on where you draw the line between "veiled" and "nude", or "covered" and " little nudity".
I understand the dress code as being adaptable. Depends on time space and circumstances. But what counts just as much, whereever u r, covered or not, is also the attitude - for men and women alike.

See 2431 for an actual answer.

Please note, dress code in 'al quran' is only for those who wish to uphold 'al quran'.

im well aware of this verse, but that doesnt negotiate the fact that it is not concidered private parts in all cultures, many just look at them as food for babies, with roughly the same sex appeal as banna/apple baby food. If we are to take it absolutely litterally as you proprose here. I would say it is ok to go around with the vagina showing, afterall, the Quran only says to cover the breasts, and those are the only private parts specified for women. Lengthen the garments. how long is that? and compared to what? how you used to have them? what if you where butt naked?. At the end of the day it is left for each and every one of us to decide for our own. The Quran is not clear on this, but have some guidelines.

              peace

And the already married from the women, except those who become widowed; God's scripture is over you; and permitted for you is what is beyond this, if you are seeking with your money to be protected and not for illicit sex. As for those whom you have already had joy with them, then you shall give them their wage as an obligation. There is no sin upon you for what you agree to after the obligation. God is Knowledgeable, Wise.

And do not come near adultery, for it is a sin and an evil path.

                242
The adulteress and the adulterer, you shall lash each of them one hundred lashes, and do not let any pity take you over God's system if you believe in God and the Last Day. And let a group of the believers witness their punishment.
                243
The adulterer will only marry an adulteress or one who is an idolatress. And the adulteress, she will only be married to an adulterer or an idolater. And this has been forbidden for the believers.

And those who do not call on any other god with God, nor do they kill the life that God has made forbidden except in justice, nor do they commit adultery; and whosoever does that will receive the punishment.

O you prophet, if the believing women come to make allegiance to you that they will not set up anything beside God, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their unborn children, nor fabricate any falsehood, nor disobey you in any matter which is righteous, then you shall accept their allegiance, and ask God to forgive them. God is Forgiver, Merciful.

Alen, when someone rapes another person it is not because the person is sexually attracted to that person. It's an aggressive crime that has nothing to do with how the attacked person looks. Surely you've heard reports of women raping men, or men raping grandmothers, etc? There are instances where the person who rapes another does not even have an erect penis and remains flaccid throughout the attack.

Rape does not = Attack based on sexual attraction

I said rape is not a sex crime, but it is. What I meant is that it is not sexually motivated. So people don't just rape people because they think they're hot. I learned that it is usually a control thing.

Regarding the original question My question is why shouldn't men cover up? What purpose do we have exposing our private parts or extra skin?
Your question is a logical one, but once you think about it, why does anyone need to show off their beauty other than to ask for people to harass them? Anyone, man or woman, who shows off their beauty isn't right in the mind.

This is a very good question, and I will (inshaAllah) find a verse which says to "maintain chastity" "conceal private parts" or something to that effect that is broad to apply to both men and women.

I think people will agree that men, for the most part, are the ones commiting the sex crimes and forcing sex. Child molestation in women is much less than a male molesting a child from what I hear on.

My mother is right that women dont think like "that" all the time, but men do, if not, most of the time.

Oh children of Adam, We have granted you garments to cover your nakedness, and as means of adornment for you. The best attire is that of piety. This (in itself) is one of the signs of Allah. Perhaps, they would bear (that) in mind.

Here we see we have to cover ourselves up. Very clear.

The submitting men, the submitting women, the believing men, the believing women, the obedient men, the obedient women, the truthful men, the truthful women, the steadfast men, the steadfast women, the reverent men, the reverent women, the charitable men, the charitable women, the fasting men, the fasting women, the chaste men, the chaste women, and the men who commemorate GOD frequently, and the commemorating women; GOD has prepared for them forgiveness and a great recompense.

Both are mentioned to be chaste. We are commanded to be chaste, and for those who are of the part of the list mentioned in the verse, there is a forgiveness and a great recompense. So clearly we both have to be chaste and cover ourselves up.\

This is the next part, what is chaste? Well, Allah gave us logic. He gave us good judgement and bad judgement and allows us to choose right and wrong, and He guides whom He pleases. So this is a great outline for a "dress code".

                      023.005
                      YUSUFALI Who abstain from sex,
PICKTHAL And who guard their modesty -
SHAKIR And who guard their private parts,

Personally, I go with pickthal on this one and Shakir too. Yusuf's translation is too extreme and is not inline with the other two.
So either way, we are supposed to gaurd out modestly, or to maintain chastity. As you see, this is from Al-Mumeneen, the believers. The context is about believers so we can see that this is regarding believers. As you can see it does not mention male or female. So the believers are those who gaurd their chastity.

So, gaurd modesty, what is modesty? Well, if you someone looks at in a lustful way, or if you think that someone might, then make it so they dont. Simple )

Tell the believing men that they shall subdue their eyes, and to maintain their chastity. This is purer for them. GOD is fully Cognizant of everything they do.

If we are supposed to subdue our EYES, does this mean we can wear short shorts and show off our chests and intimate parts? What would that be like? Its like a woman who is wearing a hijab but wearing a miniskirt and showing clevage. So logically, cover up.

Its really very simple. Dont wear clothes that show your private parts, or that makes someone (other than family like mom dad brother etc and whatever else the Allah allows) look at you like "that".

                      Hope it helped.
