Those in whose hearts is a disease - thou seest how eagerly they run about amongst them, saying "We do fear lest a change of fortune bring us disaster." Ah! perhaps Allah will give (thee) VICTORY, or a decision according to His will. Then will they repent of the thoughts which they secretly harboured in their hearts.
And those who believe will say "Are these the men who swore their strongest oaths by Allah, that they were with you?" All that they do will be in vain, and they will fall into (nothing but) ruin.

Wouldn't it depend on circumstances? For example in a place of work you might find yourself friends with any of the above because that's who's around but on a political level (allies) it may be different. People depending on what they believe may go against you then
I have to say my own closest friends are open minded ones with a live and let live attitude whatever there backgrounds. As I've got older I find I can't discuss everything with those who are not.

If a person is your neighbor, or a coworker in your office, or a fellow traveler etc. you are to be a friend of him/her. You should wish him/her well; you should help him/her when he/she is in distress etc. and etc. His/her religious belief has nothing to do with you. What you can not do is to let them have the control over your being or becoming or management of your wealth.
The powerful Christian states shall not be your friend in any way. You may enjoy their patronage and pseudo friendship but only with the expense of your identity, your control over your wealth. You can buy their friendship of such kind only by selling your freedom.
This is the case especially for those who belong to the Middle East in particular.
Wilayah or friendship is a matter of economic, political, and cultural guardianship and international relation, not of individual-individual social relation.

This makes perfect sense with what someone said about time of war/1400 years ago.
You can be their friend expect if they drive your from your homes. etc. etc. Again, this applies to EVERYONE, even Moslems, Buddists, Taoists, etc. -

In ancient times, there was hardly any travel and so in their communities people of the same race and religion tended to live together with some very small minority who are not of their religions. So all ancient scriptures including Islam can only look at their members not being converted to other religions. However in modern times, travel is so common and immigration is rampant. As such, in a modern community very often we many races and religions living together. But the economy is so integrated so how can there be no interaction among such different believers? We cannot have companies employing people of the same faith only. It is not good to those who are not large enough to form one company as they would be jobless. Living together, friendship cannot be based on religion and we should be smart to know why we believe our religions and keep such religious practice outside the common space of interaction. This is possible because many of the moral principles required in the common space of interaction do not conflict at all as it only requires treating each other (irrespective of religious beliefs) with respect and care. We should understand that as a friend, he/she would at times would want to share with us their beliefs they think is right. If we do not wish to be converted just tell them so. If they persist, they must be very ignorant about human skills and just walk away then - no need to feel hurt.

Personally, I dont care to befriend them untill they revert to Islam.

We wont know who's muslim and who's not until we get to know them pretty well... as long as they don't invite you to forget God or go against his command, i dont see why we shouldnt be friendly towards others.

601 O ye who believe! Take not my enemies and yours as friends (or protectors),- offering them (your) love, even though they have rejected the Truth that has come to you, and have (on the contrary) driven out the Prophet and yourselves (from your homes), (simply) because ye believe in Allah your Lord! If ye have come out to strive in My Way and to seek My Good Pleasure, (take them not as friends), holding secret converse of love (and friendship) with them for I know full well all that ye conceal and all that ye reveal. And any of you that does this has strayed from the Straight Path.
602 If they were to get the better of you, they would behave to you as enemies, and stretch forth their hands and their tongues against you for evil and they desire that ye should reject the Truth.
603 Of no profit to you will be your relatives and your children on the Day of Judgment He will judge between you for Allah sees well all that ye do.

The Quran also tells us that we can marry christians and their food is allowed for us, but it would be very difficult for us do this if we are hostile towards them.
What about the nations split in religion, like mine. Do I have to hate some of my fellow countryman becouse they are catholics, and love indonesians just becouse they are muslims??
