Charity only to Muslims?

I am not sure what the Quran says, but can we give charity to non-Muslims? Would it count as charity or is it gone to waste?

I came to this conclusion few years back even when I havent known the concept of free mind muslim
that Allah is the most knowledgeable of what is going on in our mind and heart, so He will give you what you deserve to have if you give away charity with pure mind based solely on humanity, without thoughts of riya i.e. showing off, the one that is count is your heart and intention, not the final results or where the charity end up to, as long as you don't not know if it's gonna be used for bad cause.
