None of the other forum sections seemed to be appropriate for this topic. If I am mistaken, I apologize. Please move it to the right section, if that is the case.

I have a question. I'll start off by giving a bit of history about myself, so that you all understand the context, God willing.

I was given an IQ test when I was a teenager. The result was 121. That might sound like a decent IQ to have, but not when you come to understand how that number was calculated. As I recall it being explained to me (if anyone knows these details to be inaccurate, feel free to correct me) there is an individual IQ score associated with various subjects (reading comprehension, vocabulary, etc.). The scores are tallied up and averaged out, resulting in your "official" IQ. Most of my IQ scores, as I recall, ranged from 140-180, except for one. That was one of the two math scores. I do not recall the exact score; only that it was under 100. The woman explaining the test results said that if not for my other scores being so high, I would have been diagnosed with a "learning disability." For those who are not entirely familiar with the English language, "learning disability" is the politically correct phrase for mentally retarded.

Having that one substandard IQ score might not seem like a big deal. I should be grateful for all of the other areas of intelligence God blessed me with, right?

Tell that to someone who has difficulty multiplying double digits, but desperately wants to attend college. Suddenly, all that "intelligence" seems like God's idea of a cruel joke. '(

I'll make you smart, yet too stupid to do anything productive with your life! Muah ha ha! >D

The Koran (as I understand it) tells us that one scholar is worth more than many worshipers, in the eyes of God. So does the Koran explain why God would want someone to be born partially retarded? confused

      Peace to all,

Hether, I dont think it would be called partially retarded, maybe your just not too good at math yet, try studying a little more, you will get it enought o get through college believe me. God gives us all strengths and weaknesse, you said you scored higher than averahe on all other areas so maybe God is evening your intelligence out by making you have to work extra hard on math, its just a test by God, do you want to work at what you want or expect God to hand you everything?

        Peace Heather,

For those who are not entirely familiar with the English language, "learning disability" is the politically correct phrase for mentally retarded.

No it is not. In terms of characteristics, learning strategies, etc. Learning Disabled (LD) is different than Mentally Retarded (MR). This is why special education programs are divided into three different disciplines

        1. LD (Learning Disabled).
        2. ED (Emotionally Disturbed).
        3. MR (Mentally Retarded).

American Association on Mental Retardation definition of MR
Mental retardation is a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior as expressed in conceptual, social, and practical adaptive skills.

Most people have some kind of learning disability. We compensate for our disability by leaning on our strengths (adaptive behavior). MR have significant limitations and also lack such adaptive behavior.

For example, some people are highly visual. They cannot solve a math problem just by reading it. They adapt by leaning on their strength and draw a visual representation of the problem and suddenly they are a math wiz.

Having that one substandard IQ score might not seem like a big deal. I should be grateful for all of the other areas of intelligence God blessed me with, right?

Yes. You should be thankful indeed. If you were MR, you wouldn't have been able to write this.

Tell that to someone who has difficulty multiplying double digits, but desperately wants to attend college. Suddenly, all that "intelligence" seems like God's idea of a cruel joke. '(

The god bestowed on you strengths in many areas. At least you can recognize the digits. If your difficulty is in arithmatic then use a calculator and try to discover how to use your other strengths to overcome your learning disability. It doesn't matter if you are entirely familiar with the English language or not, it is not correct (politically or factually) to call yourself partially retarded. It is unfair to yourself and to the many people and especially children that keep trying until they learn to compensate for their disability. It is because of such misunderstanding that many bright children are hopelessly left behind by those who think that they are "partially retarded".

        I hope this helps.

        Peace,

        Ayman

Uhm, no. I simply wanted to know what the Koran had to say about it.

          Thanks for the reply.

              Salam.

Dear sister, trust me, The God Almighty gives us all a fair chance. I believe that The Almighty God gives us all the opportunity to be born with the same brain and intelligence capabilities.

Get this Janet and Hans are living in the cabin somewhere in the forest, right? They eat healthy, they don't smoke, drink alcohol, they have never used any drugs, legal or illegal, they don't know stress, they don't get up every morning to punch in at some big company, they eat healthy food, grown from the land, not in the factory, then they have a baby and the child grows like them and at school this child gets 170 I.Q.

Now imagine the child from the parents who live in Los Angeles, mother is a call girl and father is a drug abuser. This child lived in a house where parents smoked and got high every day and lived under stress all the time. Can you imagine the I.Q of this child?

I think it's very important in what enviroment a child grows and with what kind of people you grew up with.

But i can tell you this for sure, Heather this number they gave you means nothing and i'm not saying this because i'm your friend, i'm saying this because 100 years from now they will invent a new form of "measuring intelligence" and in the year 2106 you might get a new score, you might get 370.
Can you imagine what score would Noah get? Abraham? Moses? Jesus? Muhammad? Muhammad's first door neighbor?

Heather, i got good news for you i read this article once and it said that people use to think that there are only two geniuses mathematical and musical genius.
Today, every scientist will tell you, you can check it out, that every single human being is a genius on his/her own field.

I may not be the best in math, i know i stink as a singer and i am sure that i have no voice when it comes to singing but i know how to write and i got 10 scripts as a proof. So, you can see that i'm no-genius as a musician but at the same time i am a genius as a writer.
Every person is good at this and bad at that.
This has been confirmed by today's science.

              Peace.

Alen, thank you for your reply.

I agree, much of what you said is probably true. And even if I do have some unusual difficulty with math, I do not consider myself incapable of overcoming it. I'm tempted to go into more detail about my math difficulties, but the point of my original post wasn't to ramble on about my personal problems. Ultimately, my experience with the IQ test just made me curious as to what the Koran had to say about people who actually are born partially retarded, if anything.

Via PM, someone explained to me that the line about "scholars vs. worshipers" is actually from hadith. That sort of makes my question irrelevant. -[

PEace Sis Heather and welcome to the forum bravo

I agree with all who replied, especially Bro Allen's point that this test really means nothing in the end. I believe many famous inventors were said to have really bad I.Q. scores so go figure.

Plus i suck at math, always have and always will. But i consider myself a smart person because while i suck at even the most basic of math problems, i'm really good at other skills. So don't let a number get you down. That number will only be as influential as you make it.

As for your question about a "scholar", spiritual understanding cannot be measured with and I.Q. test. At the end of the day, i can invent the cure for AIDS but while it may be amazing, my heart can be like a stone. In my opinion, when the quran talks about "those who see" that sight is not the sight of the eyes and the mind, but the sight of the heart. The understanding of the heart. So a person like Terry Schiavo could be clinically brain dead, beyond retarded even, but potentially could be way beyond us in terms of spiritual understanding.

peace Heather, I don't think you are partially retarded. Maybe math isn't your thing. Or maybe the way you are doing math isn't the best for you.
We are all born with our limitations. Just do the best you can. God knows what you do.
And a scholar is one who uses his head. Don't abandon reason.

                                salaam heather,

iq scores do not mean anything except how the outside world percieve you to be intelligent. the reason why i am very good at math(at least i think) is because i practiced a lot of mathematics when i was young. in fact, i was forced to practice to get perfect scores on exams but at the same time i enjoyed it ).

even though i think i am good at math, i just still do not understand "the 19 quranic code" even though it seems like they say it is a denominator of the quran, as i got into details i thought that's not always the case. in fact, i still do not understand why 19?

i think self-awareness is the best form of intelligence, the gist i get from reading the quran, once i start reading the quran i forget a lot about the outside world and i just... feel good )

                                  Peace all,

I would like to add my 2 cents in addition to the wonderful replies by everyone else here.

God has made all of us imperfect in one way or the other. The only criterion which really matters is righteousness. The important thing is not to be spiritually retarded out of one's arrogance. One could be a mental genius but still be spiritually retarded out of one's own choice and thereby have shields placed on one's heart, eyes, tongues and ears. God explains this phenomenon in al-qur'aan

1745 And when you read the Quran, We place between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter an invisible barrier.
1746 And we place shields over their hearts, that they should not understand it, and a deafness in their ears. And if you mention your Lord in the Quran alone, they run away turning their backs in aversion.

365 The revelation of the Most Honourable, the Merciful.
366 To warn a people whose fathers were not warned, for they are unaware.
367 The retribution has been deserved by most of them, for they do not believe.
368 We have placed shackles around their necks, up to their chins, so that they are forced in direction.
369 And We have placed a barrier in front of them, and a barrier behind them, thus We shielded them so they cannot see.
3610 And whether you warn them or do not warn them, they will not believe.
3611 You can only warn him who follows the reminder, and reverences the Almighty while unseen. Give him good news of forgiveness and a generous reward.

216 These are the ones who have purchased straying for guidance; their trade did not profit them, nor were they guided.
217 Their example is like one who lights a fire, so when it illuminates what is around him, God takes away his light and leaves him in the darkness not seeing.
218 Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not revert.

2171 And the example of those who disbelieve is like one who repeats what he has heard of calls and shouts; deaf, dumb, and blind, they do not understand.

570 We have taken the covenant of the Children of Israel and We sent to them Our messengers. Every time a messenger came to them with what their souls did not desire, a group of them they would reject, and a group of them they would kill.
571 And they did not consider it might be a test, so they were blind and deaf. But God would have accepted the repentance from them; but many of them were still blind and deaf. God is watcher over what they do.

2573 And those who when they are reminded of their Lord's verses, they do not fall on them deaf and blind.

2781 Nor can you guide the blind from their misguidance. You can only make those who believe in Our revelations hear you, for they have submitted.

This spiritual retardation is the real retardation which will count on the Last Day.

God has given us enough reason, logic and mind to understand and verify His message. As for those who are mentally retarded to such an extent that they cannot use their mind and reason in a meaningful way, The God says the following

4817 There is no burden on the blind, nor is there any burden on the cripple, nor is there on the sick any burden. And whosoever obeys God and His messenger, He will admit them into paradises with rivers flowing beneath; and whosoever turns away, He will punish him with a painful retribution.

991 There is no blame to be placed upon the weak, or the sick, or those who do not find anything to spend on, if they are sincere to God and His messenger. There is no argument against the good doers; and God is Forgiving, Merciful.

                                  Peace

Thanks once again to everyone who replied. I think all of your posts have been helpful to me.

And I'm glad to have read the quotes you posted, Tanveer. I was a bit troubled thinking that God may hold someone with Downs Syndrome to the same standards as someone whose mind is fully intact.

Maybe you have dyslexia with numbers? Y'know, Albert Einstein had dyslexia .

Tough I think Heather is most likely underestimating her IQ, yet her question shoots itself from "n". ;D I am looking through the lens of logic and philosophy, and I find problem with the very question Heather is directing.

Even if a genius learns and try to convey, could a self-confessed partially retarded person understand a divine wisdom?

                                        Peace,
                                        Edip
