99 Names of Prophet Muhammed?

Just received an email with the "99 Names of Prophet Muhammed." Some of the names were, "Hamid, Noor, Mashir, Mamood..." To me this sounds like trying to elevate him to godlike status by giving him 99 names as God has 99 attributes, basically putting him as an equal to God. I've never heard of any other prophets with "99 names." roll
Is this more innovation from certain sects?
I personally believe so since Quran tells us the Messenger is no more than a plain warner2.119 Verily We have sent thee in truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner But of thee no question shall be asked of the Companions of the Blazing Fire.
5.19 O People of the Book! Now hath come unto you, making (things) clear unto you, Our Apostle, after the break in (the series of) our apostles, lest ye should say "There came unto us no bringer of glad tidings and no warner (from evil)" But now hath come unto you a bringer of glad tidings and a warner (from evil). And God hath power over all things.
7.184 Do they not reflect? Their companion is not seized with madness he is but a perspicuous warner.
7.188 Say "I have no power over any good or harm to myself except as God willeth. If I had knowledge of the unseen, I should have multiplied all good, and no evil should have touched me I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings to those who have faith."
