Indeed, it is the other way round, we need to believe in God because we are moved by God, and if we don't believe in him, we won't be moved, and won't make any progress in life, spiritually speaking. He doesn't force us to improve ourselves, if we don't want to.

Could you please explain what spiritual progress is?

          Chapter 8416 -19

Oh, I swear by the afterglow of sunset,
And by the night and all that it enshroudeth,
And by the moon when she is at the full,
That ye shall journey on from plane to plane.

There is surely some element of progressive change referred to here. It may be a metaphor for many things, the process of becoming a moral person, a refinement of the consciousness, or a journey of the soul that continues after death.

"the process of becoming a moral person, a refinement of the consciousness,"
If thats your definition of spiritual, then there are alot of people who dont believe in God,that are "spiritual".

Thats patently untrue, millions progress and improve themselves without this belief.

salam alan. you may have studied evolution. if you believe that evolution is the manner in which all things have come into being, then be true to your belief, and examine the origin of evolution. you, may find, that allah is the origin of evolution. then again you may not. allah decides whom he will bless.

you confuse, that for which you have seen evidence, with the truth. because you have not seen the evidence, does not exclude it from being the truth. scientific minds are those open to all possibilities, and being open to the possibility that allah exists is scientific. to close your mind, and thereby exclude allah, is unscientific.

there are some of us whom allah has blessed, the blessing is we have been shown his way. there is no doubt in our minds any more, that his way is the only way, the way of truth.

                allah is the truth.

                  Hello,

I believe in evolution and I believe in God. There is a lot of evidence for evolution but scientists still do not understand everything about it (genes, nucleotides etc). Even with all our advanced technology science has not been able to produce one simple living cell from inanimate organic matter. God set the laws for evolution

                  1837
His friend said to him, as he debated with him, "Have you disbelieved in the One who created you from dust, then from a tiny drop, then perfected you into a man?

                  2788
When you look at the mountains, you think that they are standing still. But they are moving, like the clouds. Such is the manufacture of GOD, who perfected everything. He is fully Cognizant of everything you do.

                  327
He is the One who perfected everything He created, and started the creation of the human from clay.

Recently science has found that clay and cosmic dust particles have the properties of binding together amino acids which are the main components of a living organism. Scientists have found that the mixture of clay particles in water would provide a much better scenario for life to originate from than in just water.

                  2130
Do the unbelievers not realize that the heaven and the earth used to be one solid mass that we exploded into existence? And from water we made all living things. Would they believe?

Also people mention that how could God create such savage creatures. Well they may seem savage to us because they are completely different specie with a completely different psychology. If you want to see how different a dog's psychology (a specie so compatable with humans) is to a human's then you should watch "The Dog Whisperer" on the national geographic channel. The program shows how dogs bite each other on their necks and pin each other to the ground on a daily basis and if the same discipline isn't applied to pets, then they will develop dominance issues.

                  2218
Do you not realize that to GOD prostrates everyone in the heavens and the earth, and the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and the mountains, and the trees, and the animals, and many people? Many others among the people are committed to doom. Whomever GOD shames, none will honor him. Everything is in accordance with GOD's will.

This verse shows that all species apart from humans submit to God's laws. They do not have the freedom of choice. You can see this for yourself by watching the "Dog Whisperer" program which shows that dogs do not rationalize or reason or even reflect on the past or worry about the future, they simple live in the now and react depending on what their instinct tells them.

The Quran also talks about the evolution of planets and other heavenly bodies.

                  Peace

Nice topic alan... i like to add mine... This mind of mine wants to play in this thread for a while.. hope you don't mind ;D

Firstly i like to say my standings is on there is a creator behind all this, not an entity that entirely desires worshiping, but rather desires to experience this creation... a mysterious hand (or maybe voice) that influence our evolution of life and thinking indirectly and not infringing our free will. And we are a light being... just waves and energies which are connected from the source of the energy. We just live here to learn about life experience on this earth. I believe in possibilities and not concrete proofs. So this is one of the possibilities that i had managed to built.

This creator gave us free will to decide what to do with ourselves... this free will too is kinda double edged sword though... and i think this is enough to interest the creator to experience it (or maybe the creator don't want to be alone after it has become aware of it's beingness). The created might not be aware of the creator or vice versa... thus if the created is aware of it's creator, the created might want to understand what the creator wants or the purpose of it's creation whereas if the created is not aware of his/her/its beingness they might just do what they willed to do. The self-aware created might want to help the creator creates, or might want to test and experiment the possibilities of the vastness of the creation thus they are called a co-creator. Ancients might call them God, archaeologist or modern people might call them demi-god or idols or maybe mistaken as God. Whatever it is i like to keep the creator as an unfathomable mystery to keep the possbilities open.

Maybe some would say it's not free will but free choice or maybe free expression. Define what you want, the important thing is we can think and decide to do what we want... regardless of the laws outside... the laws outside might have some cause and effects though which can limit the choices that can be made outside us.... So we are doctrined with this laws and rule, regardless of human law, physics law, the so called God's law or what not. We are free to do what we want. Other creations other than human in this earth is also free to do what they want. Thus there will be some who want's to be God's servant/workers and other's who want's to respect the free will aspect, or others that's just want to what they like regardless of respecting other's free will. So this forces will help and accelerate the evolution further. From chaos comes order. When the condition of evolution is complete comes new chaos then comes new order. Comes pain then a new birth... How beautiful is creation...

One way or another, the created will realize it's true purpose of it's existence and will want to return to the source, his/her/its origin. And to return the created might not want to leave his brothers/sisters behind. Depends on their choices. Thus his/her/it might want to stay a while longer to help others evolve like his/her/it did.

On to the smaller picture of this tiny earth evolution and the human speck...

I found this site that explains about critical thinking and his thoughts on what's happening around about religion, history and what not... maybe you guys are interested.
                    http//churchofcriticalthinking.org

This guy depict the world timeline and seems like it has some missing link in it... (the Poof thing is funny ;D)
                    http//churchofcriticalthinking.org/images/timesum.jpg
Seems like there's an intervention in the evolution on earth don't you think?

Religion, what most would call divine scriptures did help us a lot in realizing who we are. It could also narrows our minds too. If used properly it can focus our goal of life to a certain point. Aid and guide the created to become aware of itself. I think heaven does exist. But most probably not like what we think, The fiery Hell i'm not sure. who wants to go there anyway. Whether it exist or not, these two places converts to the feeling of joy and pain. From the fulfilling of desire comes joy, from the hotness of fire comes pain. Physical pain is just an electrical impulse from the body to the brain. But joy comes from the heart don't you think? Pain can just be washed away or ignored if you know how. So if one can focus to joy and not to pain can it go to hell? Can a joyful person can be forced to go to hell? i don't think so. For them it's always heaven. No matter where they are. Same to a painful person, what they sees is only guilt, regrets, anxieties, fear and all those negatives... So i don't think they can be compatible with the joyful peoples in heaven.

I'm prepared to face all of the possibilities, that is my purpose of existence... so if one would think believing in God is their insurance to not to go to hell, the door is already opened for them to stay there (how nostalgic, i used to think like that ;D)... God promises that right? Stick to that promise if you want, you'll eventually get it. Just don't be shocked or in denial if things is not like you expect it to be in the afterlife. One day (time does not exist there though) in the abode heaven after all ones desires are fulfilled, they will want to move on to something else... they will want to return to their creator. I don't worry much though, the mystery hand (who/whatever that is) will always guide us and teach us what we should learn wherever we are.... yay yay
