what is sabath?
-
Peace,
Modern-day Jews and Nazirites still promote and practice adhering to the Sabbath, which begins Friday evening after sundown and ends Saturday night after sundown, usually marked by the sighting of three stars in the sky. The Jews have always upheld the seven-day-week concept, and some of them based this concept on the four phases of the moon, placing the Sabbath occurance at every 7 or 8 days...

I once asked a Hebrew speaking person about the meaning of "Sabath\ Shabath" and was told that it meant "gathering" and was first used for the gathering of the israelites in the "Red Sea" when Moses was taking them outside Egypt. I can't verify if this is true. Maybe Arnold or Arnab can shed some light.

Peace Samia,
I once asked a Hebrew speaking person about the meaning of "Sabath\ Shabath" and was told that it meant "gathering" and was first used for the gathering of the israelites in the "Red Sea" when Moses was taking them outside Egypt. I can't verify if this is true.
I've also asked a few Hebrew-speaking people what "Sabbath" means, and one of them mentioned it as a day of gathering. However, one Jew told me it is taken from a Hebrew word meaning "conclusion or culmination", referring to the end of the Jewish week (i.e. seven days). The others said it's used as an adaptation of the Hebrew word "shabbat", meaning "to rest or cease", which is a description of their being forbidden from doing work on this day... According to historians, though, it had a different meaning by the time of Jesus, and this is illustrated in the Septuagint. By then, the word "sabbat" was taken to simply mean "week". For example, Jesus' parable of 'the Pharisee and the Publican' describes the Pharisee as fasting "twice a week" (dis tou sabbatou), literally, "twice of the Sabbath".
Either way, I think the best descriptive definitions of them in translation are probably (1) the culmination, (2) to rest or cease, and then (3) week. And according to Jewish history and legends from the Torah, the first "shabbath" was held after Allah created the heavens and the earth, which describes a culmination, conclusion, or even a cease/rest from further creation.

Peace,
Sabbath literally means 'rest'. In the Quran, the real sabbath is sleep. The Jews have a divine one day-off. It is impossible to observe because you can't truly rest and don't do any work unless you sleep this whole day. I guess that was what Jesus tried to say to the Pharisees

Peace Rami,

What do you mean by "the real sabbath is sleep"? Some people consider the day of assembly (629) the Islamic sabbath day, even though I disagree with this view. The Qur'an implies that muslims are not required to observe the Sabbath; it was only decreed for the Jews and Nazirites, the ones who ended up "disputing it" (16124).

I have to disagree with this one. Throughout his ministry, he instructed his followers to continue following the Law of Moses, which included observance of the Sabbath. He never told any of his disciples to forsake this day, which was decreed by Allah, and Jesus observed the Sabbath throughout his lifetime, which clearly shows that it's possible to observe it faithfully...
Now, I have a question I've heard that the Jews observed the weekly Sabbath, but they also held a special Sabbath observance every seven months, and then again every seventh year. Is this information correct?

Peace Bilal,
The day of assembly is like a market day. People are busy shopping so God warned of deserting the Salat in this day. God said that the sabbath was decreed on people who disputed it. How can they dispute it before being an obligation on them? Regarding sleep being a sabbath, read the following

The seventh month Sabbath is accompanied by an atonement
Lev 1628 And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.
Lev 1629 And this shall be a statute for ever unto you that in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and do no work at all, one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you
Lev 1630 For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
Lev 1631 It shall be a sabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever. The seventh year Sabbath is a rest of the Land itself
Lev 252Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD.
Lev 253Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof;
Lev 254But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.Peace,

I can agree with you on the day of assembly. It was probably a market day of some kind, and this explains the Qur'an admonishing them to remember the salaat. However, the Hebrew term "sabbat" and the Arabic term "subat" may refer to the same general action, but the proper noun "Sabbath" is not the same thing as the Arabic common noun "subat". The Jewish Sabbath was a literal day of rest for them, and they were required to observe it. Failure to do so could result in severe consequences, even death. The Muslims are not told to observe any specific day(s) of rest, and therefore, we don't observe the traditional Sabbath. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think Allah will wipe us out and throw us into Hell for 'not sleeping'.

However, the scriptures never mention Jesus breaking the Sabbath, and neither does the Qur'an. In fact, Jesus taught his followers strict observance of the Law of Moses. So, why would he teach his disciples to observe the Sabbath while he refuses to obey the law? By the above mentioned statement, Jesus was not referring to literally working on the Sabbath day; he was referring to spreading God's message and teaching from the Torah, an act that was encouraged by Allah.

salam siki. the term sabbath comes from the arabic and aramaic term for the number seven, sabaa. the origin of the sabbath is the commandment in the torah. to paraphrase the torah, allah said, six days shall you work and on the seventh day you shall rest. the kohanim, rabbis, scribes, and pharisees, knew the truth, and concealed the truth from the people.
this rule does not establish a single say of the week, for example, saturday, sunday, or friday.
this rule establishes is a six day limit on workdays. in other words, if you work from thursday to the following tuesday, then you should take the following wednesday off. if for example, you work thursday to monday, five days, and take tuesday off, then you can resume work on wednesday, as you have not worked six days without a break.
to paraphrase the quran, allah punished people for violating the sabbath, and there is no verse of the quran that says the sabbath has been removed, therefore i believe violating the sabbath is haram for muslims and momins. yes, i do observe the sabbath.
allah is the lawgiver.

Peace Bilal,

Yes, the sabbath is a literal day that the Jews rest on. It was called Sabbath because they rested in it. Not the other way around. If you didn't rest there is no reason to call it a sabbath. Regarding sleep, God is stating a fact that sleep is rest. It is not a positive or a negative command. Sabbath in the Quran was not Sabbath of the people but Sabbath of the sea. The Jews living beside the sea where ordered to fish six days and give a day as a rest for the SEA not them! So when they give the sea a rest, the fish felt safe and went to them, but when this didn't give the sea a rest, the fish escaped out of fear. The Sabbath was most probably a policy for successful continous fishing. By time, the Jewish sages made it a rest for themsleves. D Note the similar rest of the land every seventh year. Thats why God say don't transgress in the Sabbath! transgress who? the Sea. Thats my opinion ofcourse. ;D
The Jews accused Jesus of breaking the Sabbath, which was disobedience of God's law, punishable by death. However, the scriptures never mention Jesus breaking the Sabbath, and neither does the Qur'an. In fact, Jesus taught his followers strict observance of the Law of Moses. The Quran states that Jesus got the Evangel which removes some of the shackles that was on the Jews. This removal of some aspects of the Laws of Moses is a diagnostic sign of false prophethood. You are talking like the christians who wanted to sell Jesus to the Jews. No offence but Jesus was a heretic for the Pharisees because he was correcting serious deformities and misunderstandings in the Book of Moses. An examle of this clash is that God says plainly that Mohammed is mentioned in the Torah and the Gospel. The problem he is not. The word 'muhammed' is there which mean pleasant but it doesn't refer to any person. Same problem with Jesus, christians think he is refered to as 'Emmanuel'. Also the Book of Moses don't give a rat ass for the afterlife. These are all signs of editing and rationalization of the Tanakh in Babylon. All the Jewish Eschatology and incredible stories shifted into the tradition. This is my theory regarding the Jewish legends thats found in the Quran.
Peace Siki,
the term sabbath comes from the arabic and aramaic term for the number seven, sabaa.
Sabbath is not seven, its rest. So its 123456-rest 123456-rest. D
this rule does not establish a single say of the week, for example, saturday, sunday, or friday.
Yes, its work six days and rest the seventh. Bu the problem sometimes the Rest must fall with the feast days which gives the theory of lunar sabbath some credance.
to paraphrase the quran, allah punished people for violating the sabbath, and there is no verse of the quran that says the sabbath has been removed, therefore i believe violating the sabbath is haram for muslims and momins. yes, i do observe the sabbath.
Now you opened the gates of oblivion, this mean any command thats not nullified in the Quran and only mentioned in the Torah should be followed?! Circumcision, Stoning for adultery(the Quran only issue lashes for fornication), Feast months(mentioned in the Quran as if its well known! Were the first muslims Torah observant?!), Beards for men. Very possible D but you have to understand that the Sabbath in the Quran was a commandment for the Jews beside the sea. God gave that law at mount Sinai that was beside the sea(thats why Moses threw the destroyed Golden calf into the sea) so the sabbath was for the sea as mentioned above not a rest for man or you can say its resting from fishing. God nor man can rest a full day unless you are put in a coma state or sleep.
Peace,
Rami

Sabbath can be implied as the test day designed by God, for any walk of life when you can surely gather maximum material gain; the test is whether you make hay as the sun shines or you believe God can give even more all times; if you so believe stay away from the hunt.

salam rami. allah did not close the door. if allah did not close the door, we cannot close the door.
yes, the circumcision of abraham is a mark of a believer and fard i am circumcised. read the torah in hebrew to understand what stoning to death is prescribed for, it is not the same as what is prescribed for public acts of sex in the quran, two different issues. beard for men is fard, i have a beard. sacrificing animals by cutting the throat and jugular is also from the torah. there are many, many practices that muslims do, that are from the torah.
i have heard belalh repeat this superstition and fairy tale of jesus fishing on the sabbath by the sea and shackles. i heard another story from a preacher who claimed that the prophet prayed to ease the burden of muslims and allah then reduced the number of prayers from three hundred a day down to five. these ignorant foolish tales spread by illiterate ignorant preachers have deluded generations of muslims. hadith worship is another one of their ignorant tricks.
they have mixed up two hadith of isa. the first hadith is the one about a sahaba of isa who plucked a ear of corn to eat on the sabbath because he was hungry. the ignorant rabbis chastised isa, saying your followers are violating the sabbath. the rabbis were trying to protect their moneymaking business as police of the torah which they knew, and the illiterate people did not. they made up saturday as a sabbath to create a job for themselves. jesus told them, the sabbath is made for man, man is not made for the sabbath, did not david eat the shewbread on the sabbath in the temple when he was hungry. isa was threatening the rabbis that the ordinary person will be eating the special food of the rabbis, which frightened the rabbis.
the second hadith of isa relates to fish as food. the torah prohibits eating any carnivore, as does the quran. the rabbis then prohibited eating fish because all fish are carnivorous, one fish eats another. isa explained that fish with scales are an exception to the rule against eating carnivorous things, the quran says the same thing, and therefore the fish were turned into loaves of bread. in other words the fish were made lawful food for believers.
somehow the ignorant preachers got the two stories mixed up and have been preaching the lies they forged for a very long time.
allah is the teacher.

salaam
perhaps you may want to consider this
?sabbath;
HANS WEHR 'saturday'
LANE ?to rest; cease, or abstain (from work); to be, or become, quiet, still, or motionless; to sleep; to keep, or perform the 'sabt' (or 'sabatoo' to enter the sabt; to cease from seeking the means of subsistence, and the labouring to acquire gain; to observe the sabt.?radicals 's-b-t'
HANS WEHR ?to rest; to keep the Sabbath.?
LANE root ?rest; quiet, stillness, freedom from motion.? It also signifies ?the being confounded, or perplexed, unable to see one?s right course, and being (therefore) silent, or lowering the eyes, looking to the ground.?perhaps verse 16124 could give us an idea
16124 Innama juAAila alssabtu AAala allatheena ikhtalafoo feehi wa-inna rabbaka layahkumu baynahum yawma alqiyamati feema kanoo feehi yakhtalifoona
16124 The Sabbath was only made (strict) for those who disagreed (as to its observance); But Allah will judge between them on the Day of Judgment, as to their differences.perhaps you may want to consider this
16124 However, the 'sabt' was made a ruling to those who have differed in opinion about Him, as indeed God will judge between them on the Day of Accountability, regarding their differences.
in our understanding
a. the 'sabt' is a ruling
b. as a ruling, what is 'sabt'?could it be the day of rest?
could it be a time to shut up (keep quiet, take a rest or refrain, from arguing)?may God guide us all.
insha-Allah. peace.

Ok so you are mixing Torah and Quran. In the Torah, there is feast(hag) times. Is this the Hag the Quran talks about? So do we use the hebrew calendar. In the Torah it is prohibited to add to the Torah. How can you explain the addition of the Quran? In the Torah, camels are forbidden but allowed in the Quran. In the Torah you can't remarry ur wife after divorce but in the Quran you can do it twice. The Torah allows usury on gentiles, the Quran declares war on it. The kosher laws are entirely different etc etc. So u really can't follow both. You have to choose one. I thought of this idea before but it didn't work.
-
salam rami. you thought of the idea and it did not work. there is a reason why it did not work.
the reason is a misunderstanding of the meanings of the words in hebrew, or, a misunderstanding of the words in arabic.
allah does not make mistakes, we make mistakes.
i saw your post regarding saturday. akhi those sources are wrong. you will say how can they be wrong they are authorities, let me show you.
The English names for the days of the week derive from the Anglo-Saxon deities stemming from the native paganism of the Anglo-Saxons. An exception to this is Saturday, which takes its name from the Roman deity Saturn. To varying extents, most regions with dominant Germanic languages practise a similar naming convention, with most of their weekdays named for their native Germanic deities.
http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Days_of_the_week
wikipedia is correct, saturday is named after the planet saturn, and their god saturn, their god of agriculture.
Saturn (Latin Saturnus) was a major Roman god of agriculture and harvest. In medieval times he was known as the Roman god of agriculture, justice and strength; he held a sickle in his left hand and a bundle of wheat in his right... Saturn is the namesake of Saturday (dies Saturni), the only day of the week to retain its Roman name in English.
http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_(mythology)
i reiterate, the sabbath, derives from the word for the number seven. the seventh day, not saturday.
allah is the truth.

to paraphrase this ayat it says allah sent a book and instead of agreeing with each other men used the book to differ in envy. for this reason allah will guide those who believe to the truth, about what these people claim, when they say, it is different.
i believe this ayat is telling us, that people who claim the torah and quran are different, are doing so out of envy. allah sent the book to clarify that there is no difference. because men will still insist on claiming it is different, allah will guide only those who believe in the truth.

Interesting. Do you want to say that the Quran and the Torah are similar? I hoped so. This would have made things much easier. Or do you say they complete each other and thats why the God in the Quran says I have completed your religion?

salam rami. allah evolved man from a lithic people who knew only stones, to the men of today who use computers. as allah says he raises man by stages, the first stage is the torah, the second stage is the zabur, the third stage is the injeel, the fourth stage which completes the deen is the quran.
there is a deep connection between the torah and the quran. you can say similar if you like. the only way to see the deep connection is in the original language of the writing. go back into ancient phoenician, aramaic, and hebrew. find the words, understand their meaning and usages, then the torah, zabur, injeel, and quran come alive with a rich complicated finely nuanced accurate almost magical quality of precision. the more you understand this, the further the detail of the precision becomes obvious, constantly training each neuron in the brain to higher and higher performance.
allah is the one who raises man by stages.
