In his article on 538 , Joe said that aydiyahuma means "(Three or more) hands" and that it's in dual form. I want to know if the literal interpretation of "The aydiyahuma of the male thief and the female thief" indicates at least six hands between two people or just three or more (in this case four) hands?

        Hello,

aydiya is plural (>=3) = "the (more than three) hands"
huma is dual (=2) = "both"

So, aydiyahuma refers to the (more than three) hands of both (the male and the female thief).

        Peace

          Assalaam Alaikum

As to the thief, Male or female, cut off his or her AUTHORITY/INFLUENCE in compensation for what they have earned, by way of EXAMPLE, FROM ALLAH, for their crime. and Allah is Exalted in power.

          aydiyahuma NOT hands!

aydiyahuma means by his effort, owing to his activity, by or through him, by his means, scatter in all directions, disperse;Root word Yad, foreleg, handle, power, control, influence, authority, assistance
Hans Wehr Arabic English Dictionary 4th Ed. Page 1296- 1296 (yad) (aidihim)

There is no 'cutting' of hands either....

Forgive me if I'm being obtuse, but that's at least six hands, right?

                Hello JM,

Forgive me if I'm being obtuse, but that's at least six hands, right?

                It can be
                (1) at least 3 hands for both the male of the female thief (total >= 3)
                (2) at least 3 hands for the male thief plus at least 3 hands for the female thief, so at least 6 hands for both (total >= 6)

I think both understandings are possible, but it would need a more thorough study.

                Anyway,

                • in case (2), the word aydeen can not be seen in the proper meaning.
                • In case (1), the word aydeen can be seen in the proper meaning, provided one cuts both hands of the thieves (that's the opinion of saladin in this forum). But remember the sunni punishement is to cut the right hand, not both hands.

                Hope it is clearer,
                Peace

There is no cutting of hands, its a barbaric practice based on ignorance.

Waalssariqu waalssariqatu fa iqtaAAoo aydiyahuma jazaan bima kasaba nakalan mina Allahi waAllahu AAazeezun hakeemun

IQTAAAOO (Imperfect Passive Verb ) means to separate, sever relations, interrupt, silence ; Hans Wehr Arabic English Dictionary 4th Ed. Page 906- 912 (qata?a)

aydiyahuma means by his effort, owing to his activity, by or through him, by his means, scatter in all directions, disperse;Root word Yad, foreleg, handle, power, control, influence, authority, assistance
Hans Wehr Arabic English Dictionary 4th Ed. Page 1296- 1296 (yad) (aidihim)

Passive Verb , the action is directed toward the subject, which means that the subject receives the action.

Passive means a verb, or form of a verb, which expresses the effect of the action on the Subject of the verb, not EXTERNAL, but receiving INTERNAL impressions and influences

@JM Ask saladin, who is the 'agent' of the passive verb doing the 'cutting'?
