The Sunni/Zakir Naik explanation is that a muslim woman can't marry a Christian because he and his family might force her to convert, and because she's a woman, she won't be able to resist their efforts and will convert. A stupid explanation because it's too simplistic.

Thanks for the explanation. It's not just simplistic, but degrading to a "muslim" woman. Why wouldn't a man marrying into christians be affected by his wife and in-laws? Why wouldn't the muslim woman (and her family) affect the "no-muslim" and his family?
It is not applicable to the jews though, since for them a jew is some one whose mother is jewish. It will not, therefore, affect the children of a muslim woman marrying a jew, but the children of a muslim marrying a jewish woman will automatically be considered jews!

You're welcome. And yes, it is degrading. The premise of the Sunni/Zakir Naik argument is that women are gullible and weak and that all men are very authoritarian with their wives and kids.

You know what? Lots of people acknowledge that the Sunni and Shia religious laws for women are unfair to women, but many don't see that they also assume the worst about men. For example, Sunnis and Shias argue that women should cover themselves because men can't help being tempted to rape uncovered women. I'm serious. This is exactly what they argue. Also, some Sunnis and Shias make their little girls cover themselves up, which is wrong because it's telling little girls that they should worry about being raped or viewed as a sexually active woman. No woman should have to deal with that, let alone a little kid.

let me share with you my understanding.
in the past i used to believe in this world wide classification ( muslim, christians and jews), in the Quran we can find different classification

Those who believe, who recievd the Quran
Nasarah (christains) who recieved the bible
jews who recieved the Torah
2+3 are the people of the book.

226 Surely those who believe; and those who are Jewish, and the Nazarenes, and the Sabians, whomever of them believes in God and the Last Day and does good work; they will have their reward with their Lord, with no fear over them, nor will they grieve.

God always address the people who recive the quran by you those who believed he never say you muslims.

muslims according to the quran can be any one who believes in the scriprure he has been handed and follow it.
2781 Nor can you guide the blind from their misguidance. You can only make those who believe in Our revelations hear you, for they have submitted.

The people of the book who belived in the true bible and Torah and follwed them are muslims .

In brief those who follow the scripture given to them by God are the muslim and believer, those who don't are the disbielivers. a believer whether a man or a woman should not marry but a believer also according to 2221

Have you noticed how many Muslim girls are given in marriage to men simply because they happen to have been born into a muslim family and many men married "white women" from the people of the book without giving any consideration to the fact they were only allowed to marry the Mohsinnats peace

One of the benefits of being married to a muslim woman that can not be experienced with a mate of any other way of life are the things we have in common such as waking up together for the dawn prayer, stopping our busy day to observe the noon, afternoon, sunset, and night prayers. Praising God for the many blessings that he has bestowed upon us and the singleness of purpose that if God wills we will end up in paradise together.

Yes I should have added when he talks in "future" tense it applies to muslims also. Since at the time of quran being revealed it wasn't really a "book"...

When something is specifically prohibited, it is not legal, lets say , marriage with the 14 haram women mentioned in 4-22,23 and if some body does so with anyone of them , that marriage is null and void for all purposes and the state may punish all those involved.
whereas when a Momina wants to marry a Mohsin from the people of the book, that marriage is valid/legal in every way, however HE does not allow/recommend it.

No, it does not, the addressees are "O you who believe", "lamastamumuninssa", is being used as an idiom, and is valid for both, where as in 5-5 only mohsinnat ul ou tul kitab are being mentioned , there are plenty of Arabic words which could have covered both men and women of the people of book instead of "Mohsinnatul ootul kitab", had God intended to do so.

OK let me explain to you with an example,

let us say you are sick and I visit you. There are apples and bananas lying by your bed side table. I being a doctor, have more knowledge than you regarding your sickness, so I advise you to eat plenty of apples only, it means ,

that apples are good for you, so you should eat plenty of them cause they would benefit you at this point in time.
You can eat bananas too if you are hungry and don't find anything else, or if you like them very much and hence unable to resist them. But they may not be of any benefit to you, and you never know, that they may actually cause some bit of problem in recovery, that is why i did not recommend them.
Had they been harmful for your health, and i did not want you to eat them , i would say, "Do not eat bananas", and that would mean that you ensure that you do not eat them.

Same way, It is not recommended that Koranic women should marry the Men from people of the book, However they are not specifically prohibited, for example, like zanis or Mushriks.
