The Sunni/Zakir Naik explanation is that a muslim woman can't marry a Christian because he and his family might force her to convert, and because she's a woman, she won't be able to resist their efforts and will convert. A stupid explanation because it's too simplistic.

Muslim men and women have the same rules concerning whom to marry and whom to not.

2 221 And do not marry the females who set up partners until they believe. For a believing servant is better than one who sets up partners even if she attracts you. And do not marry the males who set up partners until they believe. For a believing servant is better than one who sets up partners even if he attracts you. Those invite to the Fire, while God is inviting to Paradise and forgiveness by His leave. He clarifies His revelations for the people that they may remember.

By the way, what is your defination to a muslim in your opinion?

              Peace,

While Allah alone knows who a muslim is and who the rest are i.e., kafirs, mumins, christians and jewish gangs etc., where is the question of we determining who shall marry who. One thing is certain, 5 82! You will find the nearest among them in love to the believers are those who say, "We are Christians" because amongst these are men devoted to submission and men who do not rely upon the worldly things, and they are not arrogant. Allah cautions that we cannot make friends or make relations that do not belong to the above discipline. The next open disqualification is if they are adulterers or that involve in fornication or prostitution.

Then whoso believe in the One God and the Last Day, and work righteousness from among men and women of various gangs such as mumins, christians, jews and sabians Allah shall reward them with a mighty reward 2 62. Hence any righteous person can be given in marriage to a righteous person. Almost most of the prophets and messengers have been chosen from the kafir community, including Ibrahim and Muhammad and were sent to their own community brethren with Allah's messages.

If you are a believer in the One God and keep up righteousness, then marry the like of yours. Do not see their labels! To do research into whether they are branded as mumins, christians, jews, sabians etc. is absolutely a futile exercise and not befitting Islam.

              .

I do recall reading something, but can you reference the verse or verses.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

let me share with you my understanding.
in the past i used to believe in this world wide classification ( muslim, christians and jews), in the Quran we can find different classification

                  1. Those who believe, who recievd the Quran
                  2. Nasarah (christains) who recieved the bible
                  3. jews who recieved the Torah
2+3 are the people of the book.

226 Surely those who believe; and those who are Jewish, and the Nazarenes, and the Sabians, whomever of them believes in God and the Last Day and does good work; they will have their reward with their Lord, with no fear over them, nor will they grieve.

God always address the people who recive the quran by you those who believed he never say you muslims.

muslims according to the quran can be any one who believes in the scriprure he has been handed and follow it.
2781 Nor can you guide the blind from their misguidance. You can only make those who believe in Our revelations hear you, for they have submitted.

The people of the book who belived in the true bible and Torah and follwed them are muslims .
2853 And if it is recited to them, they say ?We believe in it. It is the truth from our Lord. Indeed, we had submitted before it.? Arabic

In brief those who follow the scripture given to them by God are the muslim and believer, those who don't are the disbielivers. a believer whether a man or a woman should not marry but a believer also according to 2221

This is my understanding so far.

The Sunni/Zakir Naik explanation is that a muslim woman can't marry a Christian because he and his family might force her to convert, and because she's a woman, she won't be able to resist their efforts and will convert. A stupid explanation because it's too simplistic.

Thanks for the explanation. It's not just simplistic, but degrading to a "muslim" woman. Why wouldn't a man marrying into christians be affected by his wife and in-laws? Why wouldn't the muslim woman (and her family) affect the "no-muslim" and his family?
It is not applicable to the jews though, since for them a jew is some one whose mother is jewish. It will not, therefore, affect the children of a muslim woman marrying a jew, but the children of a muslim marrying a jewish woman will automatically be considered jews!

                    Hope

Very good post and analysis of the word "Muslims".

                      Samia,

You're welcome. And yes, it is degrading. The premise of the Sunni/Zakir Naik argument is that women are gullible and weak and that all men are very authoritarian with their wives and kids.

You know what? Lots of people acknowledge that the Sunni and Shia religious laws for women are unfair to women, but many don't see that they also assume the worst about men. For example, Sunnis and Shias argue that women should cover themselves because men can't help being tempted to rape uncovered women. I'm serious. This is exactly what they argue. Also, some Sunnis and Shias make their little girls cover themselves up, which is wrong because it's telling little girls that they should worry about being raped or viewed as a sexually active woman. No woman should have to deal with that, let alone a little kid.

I guess we are taking about 5-5 , where only Mohsinnats of the people of the book are mentioned , not their male counterparts.

This day (all) the good things are allowed to you; and the food of those who have been given the Book is lawful for you and your food is lawful for them; and the chaste from among the believing women and the chaste women from among those who have been given the Book before you (are lawful for you); when you have given them their dowries, taking (them) in marriage, not fornicating nor taking them for paramours in secret; and whoever denies faith, his
work indeed is of no account, and in the hereafter he shall be one of the losers.

The issue is tricky, i would say,

The "Men" from the people of the book are not prohibited/Haram for our women, but are not recommended/allowed as well.

Have you noticed how many Muslim girls are given in marriage to men simply because they happen to have been born into a muslim family and many men married "white women" from the people of the book without giving any consideration to the fact they were only allowed to marry the Mohsinnats peace

                                1. One of the benefits of being married to a muslim woman that can not be experienced with a mate of any other way of life are the things we have in common such as waking up together for the dawn prayer, stopping our busy day to observe the noon, afternoon, sunset, and night prayers. Praising God for the many blessings that he has bestowed upon us and the singleness of purpose that if God wills we will end up in paradise together.
                                  <br>
                                2. If your mate is not muslim what will you be missing in your relationship? Does it mean that there will be a christmas tree or easter egg hunt? How about religious arguments exaserbated by the differences. Is dualality good for the children or One God One way of life.

                                    1. So you think that this verse addresses males only? The food of the people of the book and the good things are not meant for females?

                                      Salaam siki

                                      1. So you think that this verse addresses males only? The food of the people of the book and the good things are not meant for females?
                                      2. How should it be in order to contain male counterparts ?
                                      3. How do you conclude, with this understanding, that "Men" from people of the book are not prohibited

1.The verse addresses both(male and female) , but when the issue is regarding marriage with people of the book, it points Mohsinnats only.

                                      1. See the wording regarding food "Their food is hallal for you and and your food for them, but in case of women it does not say so , I think if God wanted, he could have easily worded it like, " and your Mohsinnats for them.

                                      2. I did not conclude that.

                                      3. What other things from the qur'aan are not prohibited but "not recommended"?

When something is specifically prohibited, it is not legal, lets say , marriage with the 14 haram women mentioned in 4-22,23 and if some body does so with anyone of them , that marriage is null and void for all purposes and the state may punish all those involved.
whereas when a Momina wants to marry a Mohsin from the people of the book, that marriage is valid/legal in every way, however HE does not allow/recommend it.

                                      peace

                                      siki

Do you mean that the address suddenly changes for no reaon from To all of you), to (to only the males amongst you)? Do we have such an example in the qur'aan (languages do not have this any way)?

                                        1. See the wording regarding food "Their food is hallal for you and and your food for them, but in case of women it does not say so , I think if God wanted, he could have easily worded it like, " and your Mohsinnats for them.

This is redundant. The conjunction, in this case "and", weighs equally whatever before it and whatever comes after it. Look at verses 443 and 56, both contain the word "nisaa'" and tell me that these "nisaa'" do not include men too. The conjunction in these verses is "or".

                                        1. I did not conclude that

You did by saying that (The "Men" from the people of the book are not prohibited/Haram for our women)

And a final question Who are "we" in "our women" ?

While Allah alone knows who a muslim is and who the rest are i.e., kafirs, mumins, christians and jewish gangs etc., where is the question of we determining who shall marry who.

Can you find the Men from the people of book in that sentence? or you mean to point out that the Koranic women are allowed some kind of a liaison with "Mohsinnats otul kitab"?

This is redundant. The conjunction, in this case "and", weighs equally whatever before it and whatever comes after it. No, it does not, the addressees are "O you who believe", "lamastamumuninssa", is being used as an idiom, and is valid for both, where as in 5-5 only mohsinnat ul ou tul kitab are being mentioned , there are plenty of Arabic words which could have covered both men and women of the people of book instead of "Mohsinnatul ootul kitab", had God intended to do so.

You did by saying that (The "Men" from the people of the book are not prohibited/Haram for our women)

Yes i did so , but not the half sentence you quoted, kindly print/read the whole sentence,

The "Men" from the people of the book are not prohibited/Haram for our women, but are not recommended/allowed as well.

OK let me explain to you with an example,

let us say you are sick and I visit you. There are apples and bananas lying by your bed side table. I being a doctor, have more knowledge than you regarding your sickness, so I advise you to eat plenty of apples only, it means ,

                                          1. that apples are good for you, so you should eat plenty of them cause they would benefit you at this point in time.

                                          2. You can eat bananas too if you are hungry and don't find anything else, or if you like them very much and hence unable to resist them. But they may not be of any benefit to you, and you never know, that they may actually cause some bit of problem in recovery, that is why i did not recommend them.

                                          3. Had they been harmful for your health, and i did not want you to eat them , i would say, "Do not eat bananas", and that would mean that you ensure that you do not eat them.

Same way, It is not recommended that Koranic women should marry the Men from people of the book, However they are not specifically prohibited, for example, like zanis or Mushriks.

                                          peace

                                          siki
