    Peace (I do mean it),

There is NOTHING wrong with your son!

You dragged him around at age 2, telling him he is a girl, treating him like a little girl!

The grandmother was spot on correct giving him a little slap and you intervened, the kid saw it, no different than any spoiled child -- plain misbehavior. Reminds me of this kid running around wild at a wedding and when his mother tried to settle him down he slapped her (hard!) in front of everyone, why, because he knew he could, mommy dearest raised him to think so.

Yes those doctors are MORONS! I would beat them senseless inject them with their stupid drugs.

Telling you a 3 year old, to let him choose??? Choose what? 2 to 3 years are still learning to use the freaking bathroom and you trying figure their psychology? Most of the worlds adults are clueless and the retards want to diagnose a baby?

Take the kid out of the house, let him play with other kids, and let the grandmother have him for a month.

    Why so much vitriol?
Why do you have a problem with the way Aisha's child expresses him/her self?
Gender is a social construct anyway. It's true that girls usually play with dolls and boys with trucks, but that doesn't mean that ALL girls and boys play in a gender conforming manner.

Just because a child plays in a manner that is not gender conforming doesn't mean that the child will be transsexual, although sometimes they are.
And if they are, why shouldn't they be allowed to express themselves that way, even if it means surgical reassignment?

Can you name even one verse in the Quran that says that transsexuality is a disease as opposed to a difference? Transsexualism is treated as a disease or a blessing depending on the ruling of that particular society in that particular time. See two-spirit
    http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-Spirit

I don't think the Quran deals with transsexualism since it's a category invented by psychologists in recent times, but the Quranic reference to 'male servants without need' in 2431 seems to indicate that there are biological males who do not experience attraction to women (Of course, this verse makes no reference to their gender identity, since there was probably no defined concept of gender identity at that time, but it can be assumed that some of these males are transsexuals.).

And besides that, you say 'peace'?
Your uncalled-for vitriol is at odds with that.

I hope you learn how to treat others with respect.

To say the things you just did without ANY referenses makes you look stupid. You are telling me I should not be around my child???
Whats your competence on this issue?

Children like mine kills themeself without treatment, and it IS biological!!!

So you think all the doctors are morons?
I will pray to God that you never get sick...
And even more... That God don't give you a child, with special needs...

      Aisha

I agree, for the child's sake.
I hope God guides you and helps you in doing the right thing for your child, whatever it may be.
      Peace and God bless.

        http//en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transsexual#Causes_of_transsexualism
        Sex reassignment therapy
        Main article Sex reassignment therapy

Sex reassignment therapy (SRT) is an umbrella term for all medical procedures regarding sex reassignment of both transgender and intersexual people. Though it is sometimes SRT called "gender reassignment", those who use the word "sex" to describe an individual's biology and "gender" to describe their personal identity and social role consider this usage to be misleading. The process of changing from one gender presentation to another is often called transition.

Individuals make different choices regarding sex reassignment therapy, which can include hormone replacement therapy (HRT) to modify secondary sex characteristics, sex reassignment surgery to alter primary sex characteristics, and permanent hair removal for transwomen. Transsexual people who transition usually change their social gender roles, legal names and legal sex designation.

To obtain sex reassignment therapy, transsexual people are usually required to receive psychological therapy and a diagnosis of gender identity disorder in accordance with the Standards of Care (SOC) as issued by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (until 2006 called the Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association). The SOC are intended as guidelines, not inflexible rules, meant to discourage people from transitioning based on unrealistic expectations.

It is claimed that reviews of post-operative transsexuals prior to 1991 reveal a rate of serious regrets of less than 1% for transsexual men and less than 2% for transsexual women, while studies published after 1991 have reported a decrease in the rates for both, likely due to improved psychological and surgical treatments and increasing acceptance from society. While such studies lend support for existing protocols concerning care of transsexuals, post-operative follow-up research is considered to be lacking. However a note on a report in the UK Guardian Newspaper states

There is no conclusive evidence that sex change operations improve the lives of transsexuals, with many people remaining severely distressed and even suicidal after the operation, according to a medical review conducted exclusively for Guardian Weekend tomorrow.
A review of more than 100 international medical studies of post-operative transsexuals by the University of Birmingham's aggressive research intelligence facility (Arif) found no robust scientific evidence that gender reassignment surgery is clinically effective.

Against the statistic above indicating that 1% to 2% of post-operative persons have serious regrets, the Report itself states

Paradoxically, a growing number of post-operative transsexuals are scathing about their medical care. International research suggests that 3-18% of them come to regret switching gender.

        Regrets and detransitions

After transitioning, transsexual people sometimes regret their transition, or even choose to detransition to their original sex. However, every recent study done on the number of detransitions states that their number is well below 1%, and that the reasons for detransitioning are very diverse.

In a 2001 study of 232 MTF patients who underwent GRS with Dr. Toby Meltzer, none of the patients reported complete regret and only 6% reported partial or occasional regrets.

These cases are often cited as reasons for the lengthy triadic process outlined in the Standards of Care, which specifies a treatment process combining psychological, hormonal, and surgical care. While many have criticized this process as being too slow for some, it is argued that without the safeguards within the Standards of Care, the incidence of unsuccessful surgical transitions would be much higher. This is also questioned by many critics, especially with regard to particular demands of some caregivers. The article above states that in some of these cases, transitioning could have been prevented if some demands made by caregivers, or demands perceived as coming from the caregivers, had been less rigid; particularly, if the patients had not felt that talking about any problems or doubts would jeopardize their further treatment. An unwavering demand for medical treatment and the absolute conviction of "doing the right thing" is often seen as a necessity for the diagnosis of transsexualism, and therefore the prerequisite for any further treatment; consequently, further treatment has been denied to people who uttered any doubts or even questions.

Critics claim that when patients cannot talk about problems or doubts, but have to present themselves as having neither, the patients, anxious to get treatment they perceive at this point to be absolutely necessary, will face these problems or doubts after transitioning, when dealing with them may be much more difficult, and this will often lead to social problems, depression, anxiety, or other problems. They believe that, in some cases, this may lead to a retransitioning. While there is no scientific study on the question, many trans*-organizations and groups claim that patients who feel less pressure to conform to any particular stereotype will have more satisfactory outcomes after transition. This does not preclude any screening for mental problems which might lead to pseudo-transsexualism, nor supportive psychological therapy, if necessary.

I do think that such surgery shouldn't be done until the child is much older, though

Hello!!! Did you read the story?

What pisses me off is taking a 2-3 year old telling him he is a girl and needs drugs.

Kids start identifying as a boy or a girl around the age of 3. That is consistent with what Aisha said about her child.
            http//findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_g2602/is_0002/ai_2602000265/

            see the third paragraph
"A major step in the formation of gender identity occurs at about the age of three when children first become aware of anatomical differences between the sexes, usually through observation of siblings or peers. The awareness of physical difference is followed by awareness of the cultural differences between males and females and identification with the parent of the same sex, whose behavior the child begins to imitate. How is it relevant that there is no 'solid consensus' on the cause of transsexuality?
There is no solid consensus on the exact one cause of cancer, but that does not mean that there are predisposing factors.

And will you please not use large fonts.

Please back up your claims with scientific and/or Quranic information rather than making sweeping accusations that whoever disagrees with you is by default, 'stupid'

Read the sixth paragraph after the ranting of that bizarre doped up coke head Freud...

The formation of gender identity has been approached in different terms by Lawrence Kohlberg (1927-1987), who formulated the concept of gender constancy, the awareness that gender remains fixed throughout a person's lifetime. Kohlberg noted that while children are aware of their own gender and the gender of others by the age of three, they do not really begin assuming appropriate gender-based behavior until the age of about seven, when they first understand that gender is permanent--that they cannot change gender the way they can change their clothes or their behavior. Kohlberg believed that children do not start systematically imitating the behavior of members of their own sex until that point.

How is it relevant that there is no 'solid consensus' on the cause of transsexuality?

Cancer is easily diagnosed with almost 100% certainty while the psyche of 2-3 year olds sexual self image at that stage is impossible. Therefore, the doctors? prognosis was absurd, stupid, encouraged added stress to the situation which the child acted according to expectations and suggestive thoughts put in his head at that early age continually nudged on, wink, wink.

I call my daughter a girl becuz she is one! And I will scream and go angry with anyone hitting my children! even call the police if necessary

You asked me how she manifests these feminine side, and I will tell you... She is more feminine than any girl you know
The way she speaks, moves, dances, walks... In everything!

Kids mimic their parents and perform according to expectations; this kid is no different.

If you get cancer, God forbid, you wouldn't go to a doctor? You would just sit at home reading Quran?
Transsexualism is biological, and that's a fact today 2009.
There is this test, but it is only to be made on dead ppl, and i wouldn't go that far just to prof you wrong

I think your advice is wrong, and that you should seek knowledge in the subject before saying things like this.

Not even in the strict sect of salaafi does one say "don't go to the doctor, if you are ill".

My girl reads the Qur'an, and is learning about Islam, alhamdulillah. She is praying every night, that when she wakes up, she will have a girls body.

Do you have anything from the Qur'an, that states your advice?

                  wa salam,
                  Aisha

Would you go to a doctor who calls himself oncologist but does not know one single cause as to the factor causing cancer? And while you know that they neither have cure nor do they have control for cancer? In other words, while you yet reading Quran, you will seek protection from worthless people and who fake themselves as specialists in cancer? And I have nothing to say to you when you strongly believe it is better to go under knife, rather than believing in Allah.

I am sorry if I have made you feel that I am bent upon advising you. I understand perfectly you are advise-resistant!

2 8 Of the people there are some who say "We believe in Allah and the Last Day;" but they do not believe at all.

2 9 They think to deceive Allah and those who believe, and they understand not they deceive only themselves.

2 10 In their hearts is a disease, and Allah increases their disease. For them is a painful torment because they lie.

If at all Allah says about a disease, it is in the mind of a person and not elsewhere; Allah does not mention about cancer, kidney disease, diabetes, BP transsexualism etc. as these modern medical idiotic, robotic, moronic specialists do claim.

                  Peace.

                  .

Dr Fazl, I'd appreciate it if you would keep your words in check. It's a discussion and nothing more, no need to go on about "disbelievers" etc.

I kind of agree with Eid here, also because personally I've never seen a single case having to do with this stuff where I grew up but I did come across effeminate boys and tomboyish girls and they all grew up normal eventually... I have read about the cause of environment and parents causing gender confusion, recently I read about the sun king's (XIV) brother, which could be termed a classic case of parental care gone wrong (in his case deliberately to a great extent). Not to say there might not be some truth to a natural propensity but that could be fixed with hormones/proper care/environment whatnot? In either case, if that doesn't occur then I'm in no position to say what another parent might or might not have done because we don't know all the facts and some might be skewed as it is. Regardless, I hope everything goes well in this case.

The child is a girl beause she doesn't want boy's toys? So, I didn't want girls toys. In fact it drove me mad that I was given dolls, when dolls were such a bore, and what were fun were boys games. I am an adult woman now and I know that people are wrong when they decree that girls like dolls, instead of finding out that the particular girl likes. And what goes about toys, goes about hair's length and every other fact that is not provenly 100% proved hormonal or physiological. I am confidente that it is society's gendering that is wrong and not any person's sexual character. Gender is a mater of social convenience, not necessarily rationality or wisdom, but sex is an objective fact. I consider that to make people fit a gender no matter what may be very psycologically humiliating, but to make a person undergo a very agressive physical treatment for what may be a matter of obsessive gendering and not a physiological problem is a monstruosity, try to solve an already poisoned problem by creating a crueller and more drastic and compounded one.

There is nothing wrong in going against social conventions. It makes one strong and society deserves that. But going against one 's body is sick.

There is nothing wrong iwht a boy playing with "girls toys", but there is a lot wrong making a child believe that since he plays with "girls toys" he is not a boy, or that boys do not do that when in fact they can do whatever they want except if they need a vulva or some other physiological femine organ to do it and viceversa. Instead of getting out of the artificial trappings of unwarranted gendering, we take gendering unquestionningly and try to make sex fit the gender? Seems cracy and damned scary to me.

Will that boy-girl be a mother or a father? What can heshe be? On top of it the he she maddening dance.

I am not against this kind of operations per se, but I think that the need for them should be much more clearly seen. Unless not all facts habe been stated in the thread, and we are missing something.

Y had a rough time because of not liking dolls, not liking runing after demi-gods (boys), not liking lipstick, not liking much of that garbage, that on top of it costs money, but I am damn sure that I would have not gone into an operating theatre so that society could happily sleep meanwhile on their gender idiotics and child humiliation and conditioning because of their whimsical gender-sex lack of realism, respect and tenderness for the little persons.

Summing up I wouldn't touch a single hair of the child till I didn't see with my own eyes that identity image gene and verified to the utmost detail how and why it works if it does and had made sure that it is that and not some stupid "dolls are girls toys, and girls wear long hair" that is in action here to start with.

                      Salaam

I totally agree. That's why I don't think that this kind of surgery should be done in children, but only in consenting adults who do so voluntarily. A lot of the stories of transsexuals reveal that there is division by gender of the activities in their home, thereby making them feel 'wrong' in their own skin.

Of course, I don't know details of the exact kind of environment Aisha's child has experienced, so I don't want to suggest that the above is true, and I do not want to come to any conclusions concerning what's best for that child.

In fact, the fact that girls experience less social censure for liking toy trucks and guns than boys do for liking dolls may contribute to the fact that there are about 3 times as many male to female trans people than there are female to male trans people.

Yes, I think you have touched something there. It is weird how we are brainwashed into wanting to "improve" women to make them equal to men and now we, thank the Almighty we may dress more comfortably, shoe far far more comfortably than was the case some time ago, but instead of that, let a man wear a skirt or a highheeled shoe and see the results. The fact is that men are far more constrained in many "invisible" things than women are, but they are still the norm. I guess there lies the reason why when there are problems in a marriage or similar things, women are ready to go to counselling or follow some advice by third parties, and men refuse like they were talking about killing them to go through any of that.

But I suppose surgery is easier than putting some common sense into people's minds.

                          Salaam

Dr Fazl, I'd appreciate it if you would keep your words in check. It's a discussion and nothing more, no need to go on about "disbelievers" etc.

Savage, I am answering Aisha with certain ayats, the content and context of which she only can understand, that I am not pointing anything at her by writing the ayats except to make my point with regard to either that I dealt with diseases seeking treatment from doctors or prayerfully turning to Allah in repentance for His Mercy. Read through all the responses before commenting if there is anything more than discussion.

I think most of you didn't read what i wrote about my girls background nor about the treatment that is coming.

NO children gets under the knife. They have to be at least 18 for that. Hormones are used at the age of 16, if the case seems clear. Hormone blockers are used (and they are reversible) when the children goes into puberty. This for preventing beard, dark voice and so on, this because it is really hard to get rid off later, if the child would like so as a grown up.

My daughter doesnt just play with girly toys. She has been telling me since she was 2 and a half years old, that she is a girl and not a boy. In every way there is! I did NOT listen at first! I told her she is a boy and she needs to dress like one, act like one and so on... I tried this very hard on her until she was 4. After that the childrens psychiatry told me to let the child go her own way without telling her neither this or that. Just let her be. I did so.

Now she is almost 9 years old, and I dress her in unisex clothes to give her the opportunity to "choose"(transsexualism is a sickness, which you cant choose, but I hope you understand) later in what gender she feels most comfortable in. Sometimes she gets to dress up as a girl, but in school its unisex or boys clothes... My child says she doesn't want to live at all if she cant live as a girl.

Last august we went to a big children's hospital and my daughter and I went through a long investigation. The doctors, a hole team, came to the conclusion that my child suffer from transsexualism. They also told me that its biological and not a psychological illness.

I would go to a hospital to get treatment for cancer. And I will go to doctors to treat my child for transsexualism.

But that doesn't mean I don't pray or believe in God. I do believe that when it all comes down to it, it s up to God. But I also believe that its God who has given some of us competence to treat sicknesses, and that its God who has given us the drugs for treatment. This because He is the creator of it all!

For me this life is just a big test. I got tested by being given a child with this disease, and I will do what ever it takes to deal with it!

                                Peace you all!

Regarding this, if at two years the only clue children have of boys and girls, beside the physical, is that they get different toys, if a boy or a girl doesn?t like his or her toys ?wouldn't he or she jump to the toys he or she wats, by calling himself a girl or a boy, so that he or she gets the right toys, the right clothes, the right style?

I just put the question. I know gendering may cause a lot of harm and suffering to children that many times goes into adulthood and turns into very painful and hard to deal with traumas depending on many factors.

I am not prejudging the case of your child, Aisha77, You must surely know your child better than anybody else. However, it would be unfair to read your message and not voice any concern that may come to our mind regarding the whole thing, because, finally it is better to act having thought too much about it than too little. I don't know either how much trust you have in the medicals that you are dealing with. Sometimes the medical profession may have difficulties itself and welcome some study ground. As I say; i don't mean to prejudge, but to bear every possibility in mind. Your child predicament is a very tough one, and yours therefore too, but unfortunately, in this world, any situation can always be worse and forewarned is forearmed. I hope and pray that your child's case is dealt with in the most matching way and that your child can develop in a most harmonious and loving way.

God is indeed your mighty and merciful Helper. May He look tenderly on both of you.

I know that there is children that express theme self in the other gender, and you might have a point regarding children wanting the other genders
                                    toys. This is one thing.
I didn't just give my child boys toys when she was little, I bought whatever toys she liked to play with. Until she started to ACT like a girl, and telling me she is one. After that I didn't let her play with dolls anymore. This because I wanted her to be the boy I thought I gave birth to.
It took me several years before I let my child wear girls clothes and so.

Some children goes through phases were they try on the other gender, but still they end up normal. Some of the kids acting like this and end up homosexuals.

But the children who has acted like my child does, for their hole life, usually end up transsexuals. That's a fact, we just have to deal with.

I live in a country were both homosexuals and transsexuals is accepted, so it wont do my child any harm living as one, socially.

I prayed for a long time that my child would just wake up feeling comfortable in her own body, and I still do, but now I mostly pray for her to just feel good about herself, regardless in which gender she wants to live in to be happy.

And just for the notice, I didn't start to call her a girl, her and she, until after the investigation on the children's hospital, were they told me I had to meet her in her understanding about herself.

                                    Wa salaam Aisha

Sorry to be a stickler an all, but you never answered my questions

what is it that they test for when the child is dead to confirm this condition? and how proven is this test?
and what do they think happens during pregnancy that you alluded to previously?

You keep saying it is biological, and I would like to know what exactly.

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

Im wondering what the Quranic perspective on transsexualism is. Is it allowed to do a sex change?

I am a muslim and a mother to a transsexual child, a girl born into a boys body.

May Allah reward you all for spreading your knowledge.

                                        Salaam

                                        salaam Aisha,

959 If only they had been content with what Allah and His Messenger gave them, and had said, "Sufficient unto us is Allah! Allah and His Messenger will soon give us of His bounty to Allah do we turn our hopes!" (that would have been the right course).

I think you need to raise your boy in the light of the Quran. If he believes in God and in his revelations it will be easier for him to understand that he needs to accept he is a boy. It has to come from him. Quran teaches us to be content with our lot. It is not easy, especially in his case. Even if he has strong female tendancies that is fine, as long as he does not fall into homosexuality. If he is patient, God willing he will find a good path in life and will meet one day the right woman.
I think it is ridiculous to perform surgery and poison his body with hormones that will deny what is was born. We are in a society that often goes over the edge.
My opinion is that your son has to turn himself towards God and accept what he is a boy who feels like a woman, and base his life on Quran alone, and never break God's command. There is nothing wrong as long as he follows God's law.
Your son is no different than any of us He can only find his guidance in faith and submission (Islam) to God. Only faith and unconditional submission can save us.

                                        I hope it helps.

                                        Pierre

Im sorry i missed those questions.

In 8-14 week of pregnancy the hypotalamus gland (were our gender is in the brain) develop in one way, and the genitals in the other...
No one knows why that is, but most of the researches tells its genetic, and that perhaps hormones has something to do with the development.
It has been done tests on some subjects in the brain on dead transsexuals, on homosexuals and on "normal" ppl. The tests shows that some subject in the brain is deviant from "normal ppl". Homosexuals is the same as "normal ppl".

I will try to get some of the reports translated into English as soon as possible, and then I will get back to you.
