Suicide Really Is Forbidden
-
O you who believe, do not consume each others' properties illicitly - only mutually acceptable transactions are permitted. You shall not kill yourselves. GOD is Merciful towards you.
This verse says DO NOT KILL YOURSELVES.
Unless the translation is wrong????

I'm convinced that 429-30 aren't about suicide, but I think the following verse prohibits suicide
1733 And do not kill, for God has made this forbidden, except in the course of justice. And whoever is killed unjustly, then We have given his heir authority, so let him not transgress in the taking of a life, for He will be given victory.
"Do not kill" is a very straight-forward commandment. The god doesn't specify who you're not supposed to kill; the god simply says you're not supposed to except in the course of justice. People who commit suicide don't necessarily kill themselves in the course of justice and so I believe that suicide is forbidden and that it is perhaps as sinful as murder.

This verse says DO NOT KILL YOURSELVES.
Salaam alaikum.
In the light of these verses, as well as the verses about taqwa/guarding/preservation of the nafs, it is clear that the Quran discourages something like suicide, or anything harmful to the nafs.
But I don't think that suicide is an 'unforgivable sin', as Allah forgives whom He wills.

That's my line of thinking as well, the 'unforgivable sin' part comes from the hadiths.

Interesting topic.
I would like to point out M.H. Shakir's version of the Quran (the one I have) said "do not kill your people", but I just checked my Arabic Quran and it says "Anfusakum" which means yourselves. M.H. Shakir = owned. '(
A year ago, I planned to kill myself, and it wasn't that I thought the idea of dying was cool. Rather, my emotional pain was too much for me to take (I went semi-mad), and about 95% of it was due to a girl I loved who outright rejected me for another person even though for an entire year she and I liked each other, or at least I liked her a lot. I knew she liked me somewhat.
Anyway, I'm glad Allah saved me from that. My parents surely deserve better than knowing their youngest son committed suicide. Anyway, I hope this helps me achieve more good deeds and a straight path to paradise. Sometimes, I wonder why would Allah save someone from suicide only to throw him in hell when the person's time comes p. Not implying I know my destination, but I know it made me a better muslim today.

Salam,
And when Moses said to his people, "O my people, indeed you have wronged yourselves by your taking of the calf . So repent to your Creator and kill yourselves. That is best for you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance; indeed, He is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful. (254)
Is that an invitation to suicide?
-
Ok, what the hell?!
He really said that?! Oh my...oh my...please tell me this is supposed to mean something else. I don't quite understand why Moses (or any prophet) would say this... ??? ???
-Edit-
Alright, maybe I need to look at this differently.
I don't THINK this is supposed to imply that, if you're a nonbeliever, you should repent then kill yourself, and that would seem better in Allah's eyes. Perhaps it was said only to them because they were enjoying life so much in the haram way, or because they literally worshipped a heap of gold, so killing themselves was probably the best thing for them to do because...I don't know.
Maybe it's for them to show that they would rather have the next life than the current?
Gonna ask my loving parents what this means. My dad reads tafseer (Quranic interpretations) every day so he should have a good idea of it.
-
I wanted to edit the above post.
Anyway I consulted my dad, who reads tafseer like everyday. It turns out at that time (way before Jesus was around) the lawful punishment for idol worship was self-induced death. Allah at that time saw it better for people who worshipped things other than him to kill themselves. However, from my understanding Allah changes/updates his laws with the coming of each prophet. I even think he did this with Jesus.
In addition, it says in the Quran not to kill yourselves, so this must be a change as a result of Allah completing the religion. I think it also says in the Quran that repentance is acceptable for any committed sin (even shirk). That wouldn't invite us to sin even if we were living at the time, because we would be (hopefully) serving Allah and not a gold carving of a cow.

Salam Meteora,
It is true that the word Qatl means or translates as killing, but it can also mean other things, like Forsake yourself or work yourselves to the limit of almost dying in obedience and repentence to Allah..
I think that in the Ayah where Allah would say to those people to kill themselves It was more like a challenge to them which of course they could not bear but it was to show them the amount of their guilt probably. My point is there is a logical explanation to that, more than one. )
