How would a Court of Law work in an Islamic society? Would it be like the modern western example of one where justice takes months if not years to happen?

there is no criminal or civil law in Islam as such. Basically everyone has a right to enjoy life and no one shall intentionally deprive another of his/her happiness. The cost/punishment will depend upon the extent of unhappiness caused by such depravation if proved. It is a simple but effective system whic covers every aspect of one's life.

I'm not sure if this is entirely accurate. How can four witnesses be evaluated in the case of alleged adultery, or how can the people decide how to deal with thieves without some sort of court system? Justice cannot be carried out lynch-mob style, or else it is likely not justice.
