If water is not at all available then use sand, or even dust I suppose, since dust is always there on any surface.

how does dust clean anything? don't we usually clean dust, since it's considered dirty?, don't know how one can clean oneself with dirt?

i'd say that's not physical either, don't get me wrong, we should still clean ourselves, but i won't assume it's physical just because it may look like that at first glence and that i'd have to rethink all other ayats based on this one, no i'd rethink this one because of all others

Dust is not dirt. And ablution is not about cleaning. It is a preparatory step to enter the salat.

i know, not dirt, but still... unclean...
what about people with asthma? i had it, i couldn't be around dust...

enter the salat? what if i don't do it... what does that mean, i can't do salat?

          Reminds me of
Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the
platter, but within they are full of extortion and
          excess.
Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is
within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may
          be clean also.

Well, this has all been a big help - really - LOL

No way am I rubbing dust on my face!
I take the dirt as being almost symbolic - I would touch the dirt to my hands then touch my hands to my face - as someone said - isn't ablution kind of symbolic in itself even though its a physical ritual?

Under unusual circumstances, you may pray while walking or riding. Once you are safe, you shall commemorate GOD as He taught you what you never knew.

O you who believe, do not observe the Contact Prayers (Salat) while intoxicated, so that you know what you are saying. Nor after sexual orgasm without bathing, unless you are on the road, traveling; if you are ill or traveling, or you had urinary or fecal-related excretion (such as gas), or contacted the women (sexually), and you cannot find water, you shall observe Tayammum (dry ablution) by touching clean dry soil, then wiping your faces and hands therewith. GOD is Pardoner, Forgiver.

I will do the Ablution and Contact prayers in my mind if I cant do otherwise and feel OK with it ..

                Hello - Salam
I am a new Muslim convert or revert and I found Submission and Quran only and I am in agreement. I have found how to pray the Contact prayers the correct way through your material.

My question is, if I am at work or someplace where it is impossible to physically do the Ablution and Contact prayers is it right to mentally visualize doing the ablution and Contact prayers so I can do every prayer in it's time frame?

                Arnold Frank Van Wie

                Peace,
                Respectfully.

What kinda job do you do so that you're prevented to pray, if i may ask? I use to work in a construction business and even as a security guard and always found a way to pray. Thank God.

                Peace.

                        Peace Arnold,

Well, this has all been a big help - really - LOL

No way am I rubbing dust on my face!

No. None of the rituals taught by God including ablution is symbolic and all of them have to be done physically.

Under unusual circumstances, you may pray while walking or riding. Once you are safe, you shall commemorate GOD as He taught you what you never knew.

This verse does NOT say anything about performing Salat while walking or riding as wrongly believed by traditionalist as well as the so-called reformist Muslims. It only instructs the believers to meditate(Zikr) on God under unsual or impossible circumstances where Salat cannot be performed. In this situation, we are only skipping Salat which is allowed by God as per this verse.

The second part of this verse where God instructs the believers to meditate on him as taught by him, refers to physical Salat to be performed as taught by God. Here, the word Zikr(meditation) is used by God as a metaphor for Salat.

We can do neither ablution nor Salat mentally. We can only meditate on God mentally.

                        Yours truly,

                        K.Vivekanandan
