9:84-AND DO NOT STAND ON HIS GRAVE!
-
Salaamun Alaykum,
I came upon the verse 984 and I am not very clear about what it really means. Does it mean that we should not physically stand on the graves of the disbelievers? Also, is this verse referring to the Funeral Prayer? If anyone has done an study already on it, please post your thoughts and insights. Will be much appreciated. I am pasting some translations from quranix here.
Edip-Layth 984 Do not show support for anyone of them who dies, nor stand at his grave. They have rejected God and His messenger and died while they were wicked.
The Monotheist Group 984 And do not commune over any of them who have died, nor stand at their grave. They have rejected God and His messenger and died while they were wicked.
Muhammad Asad 984 And never shalt thou pray over any of them that has died, and never shalt thou stand by his grave for, behold, they were bent on denying God and His Apostle, and they died in this their iniquity.
Rashad Khalifa 984 You shall not observe the funeral prayer for any of them when he dies, nor shall you stand at his grave. They have disbelieved in GOD and His messenger, and died in a state of wickedness.
Shabbir Ahmed 984 Nor shall you (O Prophet!) ever follow the funeral of any of them that dies, nor stand at his grave. They rejected God and His messenger, and drifted away from the Divine Commands till death.
Transliteration 984 Wala tusalli AAala ahadinminhum mata abadan wala taqum AAala qabrihiinnahum kafaroo biAllahi warasoolihi wamatoowahum fasiqoona
A 984

I came across the same exact verse yesterday, while studying sad-lam-waw.
I suggest reading the following http//mypercept.co.uk/slw.htm - it's a very good article explaining the concept/meaning of salat.
983 If God returns you to a group of them, and they ask your permission to come with you, then say, "You will not come with me ever; nor will you fight any enemy with me. You had accepted staying behind the first time, so stay with those who remain behind"
984 And do not go towards/turn towards/reach out/show support for/remain attached to/follow closely anyone of them who dies, nor stand at his grave. They have rejected God and His messenger and died while they were wicked.
If you want it less literally
984 And do not go to the funeral of anyone of them who dies, nor stand at his grave. They have rejected God and His messenger and died while they were wicked.
So we should not go to the funeral of nor stand at a grave of such a person.

The focus of my question is not on S-L-W but on this part 'stand on his grave'...
What does stand on his grave means?
It's 'standing AT his grave'. Have you never been to a graveyard or a funeral?
If you really don't understand 'standing at a grave' in the verse, I'll give you a basic explanation dont go to the grave/graveyard of such a person described in the context of the verse. -

hmm How would you say 'at his grave' then? I think "at" is a better rendition, since 'on his grave' doesnt make any sense/would be weird.
