سنة and سنين

Sanat means a year (as far as we know) and it's a noun. It's plural is sinin. But how come sanat can be used with numbers like 40 or 1000 (suprisingly it is just used with forty or a thousand)? Isn't this grammatically wrong?
2914 Walaqad arsalna noohan ila qawmihi falabitha feehim alfa sanatin illa khamseena AAaman faakhathahumu alttoofanu wahum thalimoona
And We had sent Noah to his people, so he stayed with them one thousand less fifty years. Then the flood took them while they were wicked.Shouldn't be this like "alfa sinina" ? Can the users who are well-versed in Arabic enlighten me?

Thank you for the explanation. I will focus on this sanat and 'am thing. Been trying to figure out for a few days but couldn't get it straight.

Hey what about this verse here
Walabithoo fee kahfihim thalathami-atin sineena waizdadoo tisAAan
So they stayed in their Cave three hundred years, and (some) add nine (more)sinin is used for "three hundred" ?
