    Peace all,

"The Lord doth know that thou standest forth (to prayer) nigh two-thirds of the night, or half the night, or a third of the night, and so doth a party of those with thee. But Allah doth appoint Night and Day in due measure. He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof. So He hath turned to you (in mercy) read ye, therefore, of the Qur'an as much as may be easy for you. He knoweth that there may be (some) among you in ill-health; others travelling through the land, seeking of Allah's bounty; yet others fighting in Allah's Cause. Read ye, therefore, as much of the Qur'an as may be easy (for you); and establish regular Prayer and give regular Charity; and loan to Allah a Beautiful Loan. And whatever good ye send forth for your souls, Ye shall find it in Allah's presence yea, better and greater, in Reward, And seek ye the Grace of Allah for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

as per 7320, and taking into account God wants to make it easy for us

    • 9h of daylight during the day and 15h night in winter

    • 12h daylight during the day and 12h night in spring and fall

-15-16hdaylight during the day and 8-9h night in summer

Then 1/3 of the longest night = 5h

    Then 1/2 night of 12h =6h

    Then 2/3 shortest night 6h

This would mean a salat session (for 2 salat supporters) is about 3H.

What do you think? Is it possible?

That verse talks about only studying/reading the Quran during the night - not salat.

732 Stand the night except for a little.

733 Half of it, or a little less than that.

734 Or a little more, and enunciate the Quran thoughtfully and distinctly.

7320 Your Lord knows that you rise a little less than two thirds of the night, and half of it, and one third of it, as well as a group of those who are with you. God measures the night and the day. He knows that you will not be able to keep up, so He pardons you. So read what is made easy of the Quran. He knows that there will be sick among you, and others that venture out in the land seeking from God's bounty, and others who are fighting in the cause of God, so read what you can of it. Uphold the bond and bring forth the betterment and give God a loan of righteousness. Whatever you put forth yourselves, you will find it with God, for it is better and a greater reward. Seek God's forgiveness, for God is Forgiving, Compassionate.

This is a voluntary act, hence there is no single fixed time for it, and we are told that we cannot keep it up/it is hard to do so.

      Cross-reference...

1778 You shall uphold the bond at the setting of the sun, until the darkness of the night; and the Quran at dawn, the Quran at dawn is surely witnessed.

1779 From the night you shall reflect upon it additionally for yourself, perhaps your Lord would grant you to a praiseworthy stance.

How do you know This is a voluntary act?

          1. God doesnt give one specific length/time for it.

          2. God says that he knows that we cannot keep it up, and should do so whenever we can (ie. read the Quran at night when you can; it's not obligatory/give it your best).

          3. The passage doesnt say that this is salat - it is studying/reading the Quran.

          4. Using cross-reference, it further becomes evident that it is studying/reading the Quran and that it is a voluntary act

1779 Wamina allayli fatahajjad bihi nafilatanlaka AAasa an yabAAathaka rabbuka maqaman mahmoodan

1779 And from the night stay awake with it additionaly/as a voluntary act, that your Lord may raise you to a praiseworthy rank.

1779 From the night you shall reflect upon it additionally for yourself, perhaps your Lord would grant you to a high rank.

Nuun-Fa-Lam = give spoil, gift, voluntary gift, accession/addition, something that exceeds the original, a deed beyond what is obligatory.

            1. God doesnt give one specific length/time for it.

The night during the year vary so He gives us a specific lenght variation 2/3, 1/2, 1/3

            1. God says that he knows that we cannot keep it up, and should do so whenever we can (ie. read the Quran at night when you can; it's not obligatory/give it your best).

Yusuf Ali translation says "He knoweth that ye are unable to keep count thereof" meaning that you cannot uphold the right lenght!!!
Also by reading the verse, people that are forgiven for not following it are special category of people e.g. the ill people, the travelers, the fighters.

            1. The passage doesnt say that this is salat - it is studying/reading the Quran.

What do you do when performing SALAT, reading/reciting Al Quran is part of salat as per 1778

            1. Using cross-reference, it further becomes evident that it is studying/reading the Quran and that it is a voluntary act
              same as point 3

1779 Wamina allayli fatahajjad bihi nafilatanlaka AAasa an yabAAathaka rabbuka maqaman mahmoodan

1779 And from the night stay awake with it additionaly/as a voluntary act, that your Lord may raise you to a praiseworthy rank.

Nuun-Fa-Lam = give spoil, gift, voluntary gift, accession/addition, something that exceeds the original, a deed beyond what is obligatory.

as per 11114 Salat is performed by night, see definition of night as per Al Quran.
So how do you know God is not talking about the same salats (isha and fajr)?

            Peace

Reading the Quran is part of salat, however, one is not necessarily performing salat when one reads the Quran.

as per 11114 Salat is performed by night, see definition of night as per Al Quran.
So how do you know God is not talking about the same salats (isha and fajr)?

Sunset/dusk (time of evening/isha salat/bond) is far less than a third of the night, and so is fajr/dawn (time of fajr/dawn salat/bond). This means that the time being talked about is neither fajr not isha (see 1779 which talks about that time period after talking about isha and fajr).

Furthermore, when God wants to tell us about salat, he uses the word "salat". From 1779 and 7320 we can see that this is not obligatory ("nafila" used in 1779).

I am no longer a Sunna-rejecter. See 4:59-65, 62:2-4, 3:31, 4:156, 7:157 Messenger teaches and is to be followed and obeyed. Examples of revelation received which is not in the Qur'an: 3:123-126, 33:37, 2:187, 66:3, 62:9.

I totally agree with you, I just wanted to confirm my understanding by trying to give contre-arguments.

                  Thanks for your help.

Last but not least what do you think about salat lenght.

I understand it to be for
isha from sunset untill night darkness --> depending on your geographical location this time increase going to the poles, the smaler time frame is in equator about 20 min
fajr (twilight dusk) until sun rise. --> all muslim calendar can give that information also depend on your geographical location.

                  regards

Judging by verses 1778 and 11114, and how the Quran defines night- and daytime, it looks like the dawn/fajr bond/salat goes from when the first ray of light is visible at the beginning of the day until the first part of the sun is visible at the horizon. The evening/isha bond/salat starts when the sun is below the horizon, and lasts until full darkness.

Quranic daytime Start when the first ray of light is visible at the beginning of the day (dawn).
Enduntil the last ray of light is visible at dusk.

Quranic nighttime Start when the sun is below the horizon.
End When the first ray of light is visible at dawn (beginning of the next day).

How do you know it is not Salat AL-Wusta?

Reading the Quran is part of salat, however, one is not necessarily performing salat when one reads the Quran.

                      1. The alleged "middle prayer" is during the daytime.

Furthermore, when God wants to tell us about salat, he uses the word "salat". From 1779 and 7320 we can see that this is not obligatory ("nafila" used in 1779).

Observe/guard on the bonds/affirmations, and the most excellent/balanced bond/affirmation and stand to God humbly dutiful/obedient/devout.
So/but if you are in danger/fear, so walking or riding, so if you became safe/secure, so mention/remember God, as He taught you what you were not knowing.

"salawat" is the plural of "salat", and simply means "bonds/affirmations". It is used in chapter 9 also for "oath/bond", and seems to have a formalised oral expression connotation (e.g. this can be seen from its Classical Arabic meanings petition, oration, eulogy, benediction, commendation, blessing, honour, magnifiy). So that is why it is mentioned in context to marriage vows/promises/bonds etc.

Of course, when one asks any believer, what is the most excellent/balanced bond? They will not hesitate, and say to God / God's system. 2238 is giving a message of whilst one guards/observes the bonds, also bear in mind to guard/observe the most excellent bond and stand to God dutiful/obedient in this. All the previous verses/signs are about one's duty to God's commands. Thus, what is inseparable from this, is to remember and understand such commands, as laid out in The Quran, as God teaches us what we were not knowing. So there is a two-fold reason for bringing this into the context.
The use of "stand" implies stationary, i.e. in one place. It can also be used metaphorically to mean "stand firm or persist".

Hence, it then follows on with 2239, referring to guarding/observing of the most excellent bond/affirmation/salat by way of the regular/timed salat/bond (which is also a duty/command), and this can be done on the move if in a state of fear/threat/danger. If you become secure, then remember God as He has taught you what you did not know. Note use of word "taught". God teaches us by His guidance, and in this context it is revelation, The Quran, which links back perfectly to the prior context.

                      Regards

                      peace
