I read today that Somali extremists are (among other things) forcing people to shave there heads. There were similar stories from Afghanistan under the Taliban (though for whatever reason some men in the Pathan Taliban have long hair). Shaven heads is a common sight among extremists and moderate clerics, Sufi and Wahabbi.

Where does this come from? My only guess is that it's related to the headgear. You can't have an afro with a skullcap. Jews and some Latin Priests shave their head for the same reason.

dunno about extremists views but i know sunnis do it because apparently there is a hadith that a man must keep his hair all one level because the jews apparently used to style it.. i can't seem to find the hadith prob not a sahih one or not a bukhari 1.

so all you guys out there with cool modern hair styles tsk tsk tsk though shaving hair is a trend as well...

you think it's headgear? well apparently according to some hadiths prophet had long hair.. so dunno not everyone can get a fro

dunno exactly where it comes from.. also during hajj (sunni/shia way) they do the shaving/clipping of hair that's common..

sunnis also have a tradition called 3aqiqa where they shave the new born babies hair (After a week or so) and the weight of the hair is supposed to be the amount you give charity...

Sorry i guess i'm not much help. maybe it's their idea of humility?

      Salam

There is possibly a link from The Quran, please use the search function for "shave", "head", "hair" etc. However, they are in reference to hajj, as far as I'm aware.
        e.g.

        It was recently refuted however

All information is correct to the best of my knowledge only and thus should not be taken as a fact. One should always seek knowledge and verify for themselves when possible: 17:36, 20:114, 35:28, 49:6, 58:11.

I know about Hajj and shaving babies heads on the seventh day. I'm talking about shaving it as a tonsure. There is no hadith that commands it. In fact the hadith says that Mohammed had long hair and that the armies of the Khawarij had shaven heads. But anyone who wears a turban today is smooth as an egg.

I brought this up because I found a photo of a Naqshbandi Shaykh from India (I think it was India and not Pakistan) and he had long curls hanging out of the back of his green turban and one of the Flickr comments asked why he would wear his hair like a kafir, etc. Shaykh Kabbani and Shaykh Nazim both have shaven head so this guy really was the odd man out. It's gotta be the headgear.
