In the Maldives amputation and death penalty were not meted out, the last amputation for theft however was carried out in the 1950's by the then president, who happened to be the first president of the country. This occured during a period of great depression following the second world war when the country was in turmoil due to political rivalry between the leading elite of the capital island, Male', the seat of power.

As for flogging, the sentence is still carried on and is done in public infront of the sharia courts of law. It's mostly young girls/young women that are caught, maybe perhaps by their own confession. The men mainly escape.

The Maldives parliament the "People's Majlis' are now debating on a new penal code.

Here is what the president Mr. Mohamed Nasheed said regarding the clause on cutting off of the hands and death penalty

    Friday, October 16, 2009
President hopeful new penal code will be passed without death penalty and amputation

Speaking in his weekly radio address, President Mohamed Nasheed has said he is hopeful the new penal code will exclude the penalties of death and amputation.

After debate, the People?s Majlis sent the revised draft penal code to an ad hoc committee for further review, on Wednesday.

On death penalty, the President said ?A fair, a very fair trial ? in my view as fair as the justice delivered during the Prophetic era ? must be ensured before taking human life.

?I don?t believe that the Maldives? judicial system has the capacity to meet all requirements for such a fair trial. Ultimately, the burden of pardoning or the burden of implementing death penalty is upon the President.?

The President said, in his opinion, it was unwise to make death penalty a codified punishment in law.

?I?m hopeful the penal code would be passed without offences punishable by death,? said the President.

Speaking on amputation, the President said amputation as a penalty has never been the common practice in the Maldives.

He said the consequences of the only two instances of implementing amputation in the past were negative and bad.

?I don?t think the penal code should include amputation as a penalty,? said the President.

However, the Adhaalath Party (Justice Party?) has criticized President Mohamed Nasheed?s comments about excluding the death penalty and amputation from the revised penal code. President Nasheed made the comments during his weekly radio address to the nation last Friday morning.

At a rally held at Dharubaaruge by the Adhaalath Party, senior officials of the Party and religious scholars criticized President Nasheed for saying that he was hopeful the revised penal code would exclude the death penalty and amputation. Everyone who spoke at the rally said that no one should be allowed to criticize, debate or alter the Islamic Sharia. They said that since the Sharia was God?s commandments, not even the President or People?s Majlis should have the power to alter it. Speaking at the rally, Assadhullah Shafie said that it was the duty of all Maldivians to remove President Nasheed from power if he was against the death penalty and amputation.

The Adhaalath party comprises of scholars mainly educated at the Medina University. is a political party in the Maldives. It is part of the current ruling coalition, that ousted the former President, Maumoon Abdul Qayyoom from power in the 2008 presidential elections. The party currently holds the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, which is headed by a prominent party leader; Dr.Abdul Majeed Abdul Bari, a scholar educated at Medina University.

As the Maldives is undergoing the process of democatization, it is vital to remove these sectarian beliefs and blind submission of the masses. We need to advocate to the masses what true Islam is all about.

President Mohamed Nasheed truly deserves to be praised for his courage and love towards his fellow countrymen. Great work Mr. President.

The president has repeatedly said in public that he is not a religious scholar, neither is he well informed about religious matters. Hence, he has created a ministry called Ministry of Islamic Affairs and handed over the ministry to Adhaalath Party and I'm sure that political reasons would also be involved in such matters. Adhaalath's main target are women and their job is to make them scared for not wearing the burqa.

Actually they should be named conservative party.

Whoa, maldives is a small island in the middle of the ocean.
If I were you I will let them establish their law since it will make them good. Try to change the laws and chaos would come. I bet. You should know about one of the african country when they remove islamic (or sunism) laws.
