I never heard of a parent who literally killed their children. What is common among some of the the poor is that they sell their children.The human, children in particular, trafficking is the largest after the drug and weapon trade respectively. That selling is also common among the not so poor but usually hidden under name of marriage.
Mostly when the baby born, they killed the baby instantly, by putting the baby in thrash bin or sometimes just flush it over toilet. This is very common due to unwanted pregnancy caused by free sex. If they are too poor to have a baby, usually they left it at hospital/sell it to couples that does not have baby of their own (usually by middle man/organized crime)

Ten million girls have been killed by their parents in India in the past 20 years, either before they were born or immediately after, a government minister said on Thursday, describing it as a "national crisis".
"Who has killed these girl children? Their own parents." In some states, the minister said, newborn girls have been killed by pouring sand or tobacco juice into their nostrils.
"The minute the child is born and she opens her mouth to cry, they put sand into her mouth and her nostrils so she chokes and dies," Chowdhury said, referring to cases in the western desert state of Rajasthan.
"They bury infants into pots alive and bury the pots. They put tobacco into her mouth. They hang them upside down like a bunch of flowers to dry," she said.

Yes Girl childs and Bride burning and dowry deaths are common in India, and Girls are killed for the same reason of dowry system in India this inhuman act is a burden on poor families.

You are right. I should not dismiss the real killing. It sure is there, in India, and in the honor killing in the Middle East as another example. But the ayah does not speak about just girls. It speaks about children in general. I think what most parents do is that they kill the spirit of the child early on. I think less than few parents are clean from that crime. I believe that the ayah refers to a much common practice than the actual killing.

JALAL PUR BHATTIAN A mother committed suicide after killing her three daughters at Mohalah Alam Pura of Jalal Pur Bhatiyan here the other day .She first administered poison to her daughters first and than later took it herself
According to details Zahida Bibi w/o Muhammad Sharif was stuck of poverty and usually quarreled with her husband. She usually complained to him about non availability of basic needs. They were facing famine.
On Thursday morning she administered poison (pesticides) to her three daughters Tasneem Bibi (3), Tania Bibi (7) and Sumbul (10) and after that herself took poison and died.
Three daughters were taken to near district hospital in precarious condition where they succumbed to death.
The funeral of four dead bodies grimed the whole area.

How? ???
Translating "Kasiran minal mushrikin" as "Majority of Mushriks" is wrong; a better translation should be "Many among Mushriks..." If the "Majorityof Mushriks" were intended it should have been "Aksara al-Mushrikin" or "Aksara man Ashraku.."
