Over the last few weeks, I devoted some time to read books and browse websites related to astrophysics (universe, stars, planets, cosmos etc etc) and I couldn't sleep well of late. My wife noticed a change in my character as my mind seems to be wandering and i also felt like experiencing social withdrawal or something like that. I feel mentally and psychologically troubled by the fact that Earth is like a grain of sand on all beaches in the world. Pictures of galaxies showing billions and billions of galaxies, each with billions of stars really really affected me mentally, psychologically and spiritually. I feel like I am being grip by the fear of sliding into a state of nothingness or something when I die, knowing that the planet I live on is just like a speck of dust. I am sure modern medicine will classify me as having a mental illness if I subject my mind to their examination. I wonder how most people manage this fear.
We then refer to conquering and procreation, and inshallah that space shall be just a matter of time to over take. Most people do what they can... I would suggest you don't boil your brain and take a break. Or put ice/cooling on your head, like you would for your pc's cpu.

with all due Respect.Brother, i feel the same sometimes. I am depressed as well but over another thing and for quite some time now. Reading Quran reminds me and keeps me safe, it keeps reminding me that there is Hope and that God is in charge of everything, He will take care of me, God willing.
It's a good thing that you have been thinking so much but do not forget your spouse, bro, maybe it would be better if you discussed topics that bther you or that you wonder at with her. God knows best.

I had a similar feeling when once I was sitting in front of the Ka'ba, when I saw a particle on the ground. I thought I was so small as that speck, so worthless in the sight of Allah.
Then I picked that particle, and when I looked more carefully, I saw that it was not dust, that it was a seed in the shape of a diamond.
And that was it.
For us, big and small makes a difference. But for Allah, He does not forget the small. He is Near the small as He is Near the big. The big does not prevent Him, from being Merciful and Beneficent to the small.
And I imagined the atom, and the subparticles. His Mercy is near everything whether small or big. And who can say that the small is not only small relatively to the big. And maybe it is as big as a galaxy compared to some other particles? And maybe this is going toward the infinitesimal? Think about the fractals.

It's been a very long while since i visited here... just happens that my son clicked this bookmark.... and made me want to check this interesting topic.
I just want to add... what Carl Sagan would say about how interesting we are among the vast empty space and billions of stars and planets. The Pale Blue Dot.
- Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar", every "supreme leader", every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.
The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit, yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand.
It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character-building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.
