What does Alif-Lam-Miim/ آلم means?
-
Dear all, unfortunately, for hundreds of years our clergy keeps telling that meanings of nobody knows except Allah and his prophet. Rest as ignorant as they are about Quran and its message continued in their blind following; to the extent that they just read it as Alif Lam Miin as separate alphabet. However, if one with little knowledge of Arabic language pays attention to this phrase; it becomes very evident that first Alif is written with a medda. This would suggest that there are two Alifs before Lam i.e., in actuality this phrase is written in script as . Hence, first Alif would mean here ?hasn't or isn?t ?and ?A man in pain or man suffered from pain?.
Traditional translations added as usual for ease of comparison only. No intention to belittle or ridicule others understanding or beliefs. Hence, should be viewed as such.
Positive and constructive comments and critics will be greatly appreciated.

Al-Baqarah
(Historically The Cow)Surah 2 1
Is not mankind in pain and in suffering?
Tahir ul Qadri ( ں
Yousuf Ali A.L.M.
Surah 2 2
For that suffering, this is the book of principles, lest, this suffering makes you weak, debilitated and driven to ruin. In this book is the banner and standard of conduct that I make clear and evident, for all seeking to be amongst those safeguarding against the end of their physical life; as well as the deprivation of senses, intellectual faculty, grief, sorrows and fears.
Tahir ul Qadri (ہ (ہ
Yousuf Ali This is the Book; in it is guidance sure, without doubt, to those who fear Allah;
Surah 2 3
Such are the ones, rendering themselves secure, safe, and free from fear; with the standard and banner that I make clear and evident continually, and always remain doing so. Those, who are cunning, crafty and cause disgust or hatred, so strive against themselves, subsequently causing difficulties and are stuck deeply within their characteristics, just like deep pegs or stakes in the ground. They are among those that dwell underground, just like animals belonging to the realm of instinct and urges.
Tahir ul Qadri ( ھ ( ہ
Yousuf Ali Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them;
Surah 2 4
And such are the ones, rendering themselves secure, safe and free from fear; with all preceding knowledge that is sensible and based on fact, that comes from an ancestral source, as a benefit, favour and blessing to you. And what knowledge was preceding that is sensible and based on fact, being derived from an ancestral source, for those, who existed before you, in time, place and rank; as well as for, the ones before them, that recognized truth and became certain and sure of it, both intuitively and inferentially.
Tahir ul Qadri (ب (ل
Yousuf Ali And who believe in the Revelation sent to thee, and sent before thy time, and (in their hearts) have the assurance of the Hereafter.
Surah 2 5
Unless you rectify, so amend your behaviour, and achieve decisive control over your weakness and debilitation, you will remain among those who are dubious and confused about conduct, and social behaviour, that all should engage in. And those of you, who exercise decisive control over your weakness and debilitation; are the ones seeking to be among those prospering, so attaining what they desire and seek.
Tahir ul Qadri
Yousuf Ali They are on (true) guidance, from their Lord, and it is these who will prosper.

There is no medda on Aleph.

Alif; consonants of Arabic alphabet ( ‎, Laam and Meem. Initial letter Alif has no speech sound and is not conjoined with the succeeding consonants while Laam and Meem are conjoined, and both have above them ancillary glyph/ prolongation sign/mark which changes the sound value of the letter to which it is added. It reflects that the Book in hand is in the language that has letters and other marks, representing that its writing system is letter-diacritic combination based, resulting in the combination of sounds that form a syllable, rather than a single sound.Syllabic Letters/ consonants of Arabic language.

If one were to open up any print versions of AlKitab. One finds two Meddas not just one in this verse. However, I have yet to find an Arabic principle suggesting any other use of Medda, except indicating combination of two Alifs.
However, for discussion sake, if one were to accept that there is no Medda at the start. This would only change the meanings of first verse from "Is not mankind in pain and in suffering?" to " mankind is in pain and suffering".
Peace,
Badar

Pl see the verse above again. There are two medda, one on Laam and the other on Meem but not on the alif.

Does it mean that if there is no Medda at all, from meaning point of view, anywhere on the above "word", then still it would mean " mankind is in pain and suffering".
If so, it still carries the same message as suggested by Brother Badar?Peace with prayers for the real understanding of the message.
