Of course not. It's just a symbol of humility, which makes it inappropriate when one is trying to get noticed.

Like 'look at me im pious because I wear a symbol of humilty'?

Here the men wear the zebeeba (sp) to show they bang thier heads on the ground too hard pray a lot -\

A woman in a headscarf is less eye catching than one without. It's because the headscarf breaks up the visual structure of the head so your mind doesn't focus in as quickly.

I'd say that depends entirely on the style of the headscarf, the overall look of the lady and the environment / culture.

Why are you arguing this? Whether you like or hate them, it's obviously the purpose of the garment!

              Why are you arguing this?

Because I believe your statement that a woman with a headscarf attracts less attention than one without is simply wrong.

Not sure where you live, or how many women with headscarves you encounter in your daily life. Maybe our observations are simply different because of our living circumstances. But your statement simply contradicts my personal observations.
              peace

Whether you like or hate them, it's obviously the purpose of the garment!

I don't think the purpose of a headscarf is to show humility. And I am not aware of any verses stating this.

Obviously since the headscarf is not mentioned in Quran, you're not going to find explicit explanations of its purpose there! But if you look at the sources where it is mentioned, like the Bible where St Paul tells Christian women they must cover their heads in the Church, it is explicitly stated the purpose is to show humility.

Where the headscarf attracts attention, that's just politics at work. It's not the nature of the garment but just cultural baggage. The nature of the garment is very much about hiding oneself from attention.

Exactly. And the few verses in the Qur'an that speak about women's clothing mention that the purpose of covering is to be recognized as believing women and not getting harassed. There is nothing about humility or wearing a headscarf as a symbol for anything.

The whole hijab issue has been so overloaded with symbolism and meanings, that's why I think we have to be very careful to not assign magical qualities or symbolism to that piece of fabric.

But if you look at the sources where it is mentioned, like the Bible where St Paul tells Christian women they must cover their heads in the Church, it is explicitly stated the purpose is to show humility.

But why should we care what Paul says about covering the head in church? That's entirely irrelevant for Muslim women. If God wanted us to cover our heads in the mosque, he would have told us so.

Where the headscarf attracts attention, that's just politics at work. It's not the nature of the garment but just cultural baggage. The nature of the garment is very much about hiding oneself from attention.

Mh ... not sure I understand this statement. What do you mean by "politics at work"?

It is not wrong to wear a headscarf if one wishes to, however if one says it is God's law, then one must be sure they are right, as to say such a thing if false is not a good thing. However, if one says it after doing research to the best of one's ability and with sincerity, then there is less of an issue, if it is right or wrong.

This whole 'women should cover their hair to not get attention from men' thing is so stupid. Women are attracted to men too. Women like men's hair too. So if women should cover their hair then so should men. Some guys are stuck a few centuries back and don't realise this.

It is up to you and to anybody to adopt the attire or the atitude which springs from their heart as most respectful. But nobody can impose on others what from his or her own feeling is more respectful. To me the kind of dress does not add or detract from respect, not particularly from God, who is the most intimately acquaintanced with us. Definitely, the way one dresses goes with one's mood, and therefore I do think that dress has its importance for the prayers, but it is personal feeling. On the other hand, what is not objectively proper is that covering head should be considered more humble (as somebody has said a few messages back) or respectful when it is a woman and not matter at all if it is a man. So it is good for women to be humble or respectful, but nor for men? This is the questi?n, that hiyab and covering has been turned in a female specialty. Back centuries, as much women as men used to cover their heads, so the existence in theory of hadith or rules made by the madhhabs did not have so much wiehgt and importance in dividing sexes. Today it is blatant and offensive for women that there should be for them an added imposition and that this imposition should be dressed in a sauce of morality and virtue which is nothing to do with the question. The invention of male sensibility to females hair or whatever is pure and silly invention and nothing in the Qur'an supports such idiocy.

                                  Salaam
