Why are you arguing this? Whether you like or hate them, it's obviously the purpose of the garment!

      Why are you arguing this?

Because I believe your statement that a woman with a headscarf attracts less attention than one without is simply wrong.

Not sure where you live, or how many women with headscarves you encounter in your daily life. Maybe our observations are simply different because of our living circumstances. But your statement simply contradicts my personal observations.
      peace

Whether you like or hate them, it's obviously the purpose of the garment!

I don't think the purpose of a headscarf is to show humility. And I am not aware of any verses stating this.

Obviously since the headscarf is not mentioned in Quran, you're not going to find explicit explanations of its purpose there! But if you look at the sources where it is mentioned, like the Bible where St Paul tells Christian women they must cover their heads in the Church, it is explicitly stated the purpose is to show humility.

Where the headscarf attracts attention, that's just politics at work. It's not the nature of the garment but just cultural baggage. The nature of the garment is very much about hiding oneself from attention.

Exactly. And the few verses in the Qur'an that speak about women's clothing mention that the purpose of covering is to be recognized as believing women and not getting harassed. There is nothing about humility or wearing a headscarf as a symbol for anything.

The whole hijab issue has been so overloaded with symbolism and meanings, that's why I think we have to be very careful to not assign magical qualities or symbolism to that piece of fabric.

But if you look at the sources where it is mentioned, like the Bible where St Paul tells Christian women they must cover their heads in the Church, it is explicitly stated the purpose is to show humility.

But why should we care what Paul says about covering the head in church? That's entirely irrelevant for Muslim women. If God wanted us to cover our heads in the mosque, he would have told us so.

Where the headscarf attracts attention, that's just politics at work. It's not the nature of the garment but just cultural baggage. The nature of the garment is very much about hiding oneself from attention.

Mh ... not sure I understand this statement. What do you mean by "politics at work"?

It is not wrong to wear a headscarf if one wishes to, however if one says it is God's law, then one must be sure they are right, as to say such a thing if false is not a good thing. However, if one says it after doing research to the best of one's ability and with sincerity, then there is less of an issue, if it is right or wrong.

This whole 'women should cover their hair to not get attention from men' thing is so stupid. Women are attracted to men too. Women like men's hair too. So if women should cover their hair then so should men. Some guys are stuck a few centuries back and don't realise this.

It is up to you and to anybody to adopt the attire or the atitude which springs from their heart as most respectful. But nobody can impose on others what from his or her own feeling is more respectful. To me the kind of dress does not add or detract from respect, not particularly from God, who is the most intimately acquaintanced with us. Definitely, the way one dresses goes with one's mood, and therefore I do think that dress has its importance for the prayers, but it is personal feeling. On the other hand, what is not objectively proper is that covering head should be considered more humble (as somebody has said a few messages back) or respectful when it is a woman and not matter at all if it is a man. So it is good for women to be humble or respectful, but nor for men? This is the questi?n, that hiyab and covering has been turned in a female specialty. Back centuries, as much women as men used to cover their heads, so the existence in theory of hadith or rules made by the madhhabs did not have so much wiehgt and importance in dividing sexes. Today it is blatant and offensive for women that there should be for them an added imposition and that this imposition should be dressed in a sauce of morality and virtue which is nothing to do with the question. The invention of male sensibility to females hair or whatever is pure and silly invention and nothing in the Qur'an supports such idiocy.

What of when a time when the majority of the world saw no problem with, and even encouraged head-covering - among all populations, regardless of a religion? I guess the people to wear it during that time were wrong then but right now.

                                      Salam,

Only two women in my family wear Hijab my Aunty and my Uncle's wife. All the other women in my family (including close relatives do not wear hijab despite being religious muslims.

I remember back in my Sunni days trying to convince my mum to wear hijab or at least convincing my mum to get my sisters to wear hijab And this was less than a year ago lol, how quick time flies by. Now that I think about it, I'm glad my mum didn't start wearing hijab as this would have caused a domino effect in the family, slowly but surely my cousins would have adopted the hijab aswell. Is it strange that my mum prays 5 times a day but doesn't wear a hijab (except for prayer)?

The only problem now is that my Aunty is forcing her 5 and 7 year old daughters to wear the hijab...their probably stuck with it now for most of their life regardless of whether they like it or not.

But of course, I'm not against the hijab. I think it looks quite nice on many women.

I can't understand in what way parents can justify forcing 5 and 7 year old girls to wear hijab. -\ They're not even NEAR the stage where it's even an issue...and even then, you can't force anyone to wear anything.

Hijab is way over-discussed, and I'm very happy I took mine off.

You are right you can't force anyone to do anything... HOWEVER, sometimes it is less headache to just do it.

I have a love/hate relationship forming with my scarf. I am tired of stares, tired of comments. I want to be like the men where you have no idea what faith they are. I am like a flashing target and sometimes I want to be incognito. Sunni's will say it prevents harassment and attention, that depends on where you live. Anyway I see now it is not an obligation. I am at the point now where I would like to take it off. I have reasons of why I wear it, but for me if I run out to the car or answer the door without it, I am not worried about it.

I have sisters who have taken it off and their husbands had kittens, even threatened divorced. I had a friend who while holding her son had a man pull a gun on her calling her a "desert whore". When she took it off after that out of fear, her husband almost left her and life was very hard for her for a good while. They did fix it, but he would get so nervous when she was out and who would look at her, it drove her nuts. Why are they so insecure about someone seeing their wife's hair? I don't get it.
