what exactly is wrong with it?

do people here still don't know it's what's in the soul (how the soul is developed) is what matters?

Well it does say in the old testament not to tattoo the body, having said that, I have three.

I'd like to know what your views are on a Muslim having tattoos, such as do you think this is haram?

why would such a thing be harram anyway?
what exactly is wrong with it?

do people here still don't know it's what's in the soul (how the soul is developed) is what matters?

            Peace all,

i 'm not gonna make a final answer either, but yesterday i chatted a bit about it, and something completely (or almost) destroys my fantasy to have a tattoo on the chest over my heart it is required that a blood donor to be free of tattoos (regulations vary depending on where you live). So if you wish to become a blood donor and also wanted a tattoo, you better be well-informed about it.

That's just an example from a given context.

As for someone's already tattooed like you living as a "muslim", well, that depends a lot on which "muslim" community you're asking about. Sunni has a hadith regarding tattoo which may form their feeling/opinion towards it.

Personally, i'd "look" at you or any people not on face value. You know, there is a reason why the heart is hidden inside ...

As for your tattoos, let my eyes judge

I, like everyone else, don't have the perfect answer. But there are some things I've heard that I found interesting.

I've heard that tattoos are allowed as long as you don't tattoo your hands, forearms, face, head or feet - because that's the places you wash before praying - BUT when you get a tattoo the ink goes under the skin, so it doesn't rlly cover anything on the surface - so forget that one.

And some have said you're not allowed to because it says in the Quran you're not allowed to alter your appearance - in that case we're all sinning. So I don't know how accurate that one is either.

and i just realized this post is meaningless sorry everyone.

But personally I don't see whats wrong with tattoos, it just seems like something that should typically be haram, anybody agree?

ummm, I'm not sure cause I only read it through someone else post at a different site, there was no verse and not accurately written. It was some time ago though.

Did you get the tattoos before or after you became a submitter?

Leviticus {1928} Yeshall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor
print any marks upon you I the LORD.

As for tattoo on body I have been told that if you have a tattoo then your abolution is not accepted and as a result you can not purify yourself. Who knows!

                    Tattoo History

Tattoos are a very old form of body art and have been practiced from a very long time in civilized human history. The history of tattoos is very ancient and seems to be of thousands of years old and even before the birth of Christ. The recorded indication of tattoos comes from the ancient Egypt where wall paintings as old as 2000 BC have been suggesting the use of tattoos in the ancient Egyptian society.

The etymology of word tattoo provides few very different and interesting answers to the current day practicing of making permanent colored marks on human body or tattooing. The word ?tattoo? can have many origins as words in many different languages have the same meaning and similar pronunciation. Different civilizations have been recorded to use the word tattoo or at least practicing of coloring their body parts for different reasons have been recorded.

                    ?Tattoo? or ?Tatao? or ?Tatu?

The Polynesian word ?tatao?, which means ?to tap?, can be the originator of this word though researchers suggest an Tahitian word ?tatu? which means to mark something to be the distant ancestor of the modern word ?tattoo?. Many different cavitations in the past and few in the current world have been performing the practice of coloring their body part for different reasons.

In few groups or religions, tattoo is an integral part of their religion and each person following the religion is required to have that tattoo mark on their body symbolizing the person authority as a group member. Even modern day gangs are seen to have a particular mark on their shoulders signifying their group name.

I was thinking maybe due to this religious link, people in the past have mad tattoos taboo for Islam? Just a thought.

                    Peace

                          Asalaamu'Alaikom,
Thank you all for your time and answers, you were very helpful.
I reverted in my mid 20's, I'm 31 now & started getting tattooed when I turned 18. I've always been very much into tattoos & what they stand for not for fashionable reasons. I'm pretty much covered from the waist up including hands & neck but mashAllah not my face. After my reversion I tried not to carry on tattooing myself but saw some parts of my body as incomplete but I guess I was addicted to it. All my tattoos post reversion are all 'Islamic' for example I have Surah Al Fatiah covering my whole back in arabic! I know this is still wrong but it made me feel better about it -).
I know of the Hadith about the 'curse of the tattooed and the tattoo doers' but don't really trust any Hadith that isn't in accordance with Al Qur'an.
Mostly I get hassle from non-Muslims about having tattoos as they think it's haram and therefore I'm "a fake Muslim" & for instance Sunni Muslims looking at me like I'm a dog, which hurts & has lead me to practice Islam alone.
My conclusion is it's a sin but not a great sin & being Human we all sin & trying not to sin leads us to sin!
The point about it being haram in The Torah I'm not sure about as I was lead to believe that Al Qur'an is the only book we need as Muslims, but I could be wrong.
You all seem like a nice group of people here & more relaxed as Muslims as I've come across many types over the years and most of them not very nice.
Well thanks again, I continue to practice Islam to the best of my abilities and hope Allah is Merciful to me.
                          Neaal.

                            Question

Are Tattoos Haram in Islam ? if not , which symbols are haram ? I know hurting the body on purpose is Haram , but if tattoo doesn't hurt the body , is it still Haram , can u please clear all that for me.

                            Answer

                            Praise be to Allaah.

Tattooing, in which the skin is pierced with a needle and a blue or other coloured dye is injected, is haraam in all forms, whether it causes pain or not, because it involves changing the creation of Allaah, and because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed the one who does tattoos and the one for whom that is done. In al-Saheehayn it is narrated that ?Abd-Allaah ibn Mas?ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said ?May Allaah curse the women who do tattoos and those for whom tattoos are done, those who pluck their eyebrows and those who file their teeth for the purpose of beautification and alter the creation of Allaah.? (al-Bukhaari, al-Libaas, 5587; Muslim, al-Libaas, 553.

With regard to all these matters, the ahaadeeth testify that the one who does them is cursed and that they are major sins. There is some difference of scholarly opinion as to the reason why they are forbidden. It was said that it is because they are a form of deception, and it was said that it is because it is a way of changing the creation of Allaah, as Ibn Mas?ood said ? which is more correct and also includes the first meaning. And it was suggested that what is forbidden is only that which is permanent, because that is changing the creation of Allaah; as for that which is not permanent, such as kohl which used for adornment by women, that is permitted by the scholars. (Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 5/393).

So if what is referred to in the question is that which is not permanent, then it is not a tattoo as such and does not change the creation of Allaah. See question no. 8904.

In my opinion - even more haram than tattoos that have nothing to do with religion.
When you use the bathroom or fornicate your najis - I don't think you want to have any Islamic symbols, names or texts on your body while your najis.

There's this guy who actually tattood the name Allah on his body - he did it cause he loves God, of course. But I guess he has to be extra clean now a days.

                                        Heres my 2 cents.

I am 19 years young. and so far through-out my life, I have wanted and was Very close to getting many tattoos. I did attempt one time with a friend to get a Scarface Tony Montana Tatto on my arm using a lighter/Pen/and safty pin...but that was a failed attempt... Lol D
Here were the tattoos I was about to get....

                                        1)SKATE AND DESTROY
                                        2)PAMF punk.ass.mo.fo.
                                        3)Band Tattoos
                                        4) Anarchy/Communism
                                        5)My zipcode
                                        6)Judaism
                                        7)Kabalah
                                        African Warior
                                        9)Afrian Beads
                                        9)African witchcraft tattoos.
                                        etc....

Then I found Islam. The point that I realized is that Life is a Journey for me. and There really is no reason for me to get vain tattoos about the diverese Ideologies that I subscribe to at that given moment. Because Not only do I have NO IDEA if 5 years down the road I will Progress on and forget about the old Ideologies and develope new ones...But Also...I dont need a Permanete tatto to show these events.

Sometimes Tattoos could serve as Reminders and thats Why a part of me STILL wants to get tattoos. Right now I would like to get a Tattoo of Allah, and the Quran...However I reaslize that I dont need to go to that Extreme to develope a reminder. A simple Symbol on a Ring, or Neckless will do. or possibly a Braclet containg a verese of the QUran that is about Zakat. I could Easily take it off when nessesary and easily put it back on. Its BETTER than a Tattoo. (for me)

Not only that but there is this Girl who has a tattoo of a Virgin Mary on her back...and this guy at work told her...hey but what about if you are having sex with your boyfriend? wouldnt that feel a little weird and awkward?

Personnally, If I am with a girl (wife) and we are having sex...and shes got a religious tattoo on her back (a religion that I practice)...uh....I think that would probabily end the mood...lol I would imagine that I would feel really really akward and that tattoo would just be stareing at me the whole time...

                                        Wouldnt you feel akward?

So for me...Im on the No tatto side. D

Salaam, I guess tattoos for me are like photographs, memories of the past good & bad that will stay with me until I die. This is perhaps the reason why so many people get them. I already had lots pre-reversion & have always been really into them. My Islamic tattoos to me are showing my devotion to God weather or not anyone agrees with that or thinks it is wrong to show devotion in such a way. Either way what's done is done & I'll have to live with them as permanent scars, & display my sins. I don't really agree with some of the comments made that they are dirty. They're just ink under the skin & have never caused any infection which usually happens just after they've been done if the tattooist &/or his/her equipment are unclean.
Well anyway thanks for the comments.
                                          Peace )
