Praise be to Allaah.
Tattooing, in which the skin is pierced with a needle and a blue or other coloured dye is injected, is haraam in all forms, whether it causes pain or not, because it involves changing the creation of Allaah, and because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) cursed the one who does tattoos and the one for whom that is done. In al-Saheehayn it is narrated that ?Abd-Allaah ibn Mas?ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) said ?May Allaah curse the women who do tattoos and those for whom tattoos are done, those who pluck their eyebrows and those who file their teeth for the purpose of beautification and alter the creation of Allaah.? (al-Bukhaari, al-Libaas, 5587; Muslim, al-Libaas, 553.
With regard to all these matters, the ahaadeeth testify that the one who does them is cursed and that they are major sins. There is some difference of scholarly opinion as to the reason why they are forbidden. It was said that it is because they are a form of deception, and it was said that it is because it is a way of changing the creation of Allaah, as Ibn Mas?ood said ? which is more correct and also includes the first meaning. And it was suggested that what is forbidden is only that which is permanent, because that is changing the creation of Allaah; as for that which is not permanent, such as kohl which used for adornment by women, that is permitted by the scholars. (Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 5/393).
So if what is referred to in the question is that which is not permanent, then it is not a tattoo as such and does not change the creation of Allaah. See question no. 8904.

In my opinion - even more haram than tattoos that have nothing to do with religion.
When you use the bathroom or fornicate your najis - I don't think you want to have any Islamic symbols, names or texts on your body while your najis.There's this guy who actually tattood the name Allah on his body - he did it cause he loves God, of course. But I guess he has to be extra clean now a days.

Heres my 2 cents.
I am 19 years young. and so far through-out my life, I have wanted and was Very close to getting many tattoos. I did attempt one time with a friend to get a Scarface Tony Montana Tatto on my arm using a lighter/Pen/and safty pin...but that was a failed attempt... Lol D
Here were the tattoos I was about to get....1)SKATE AND DESTROY
2)PAMF punk.ass.mo.fo.
3)Band Tattoos
4) Anarchy/Communism
5)My zipcode
6)Judaism
7)Kabalah
African Warior
9)Afrian Beads
9)African witchcraft tattoos.
etc....Then I found Islam. The point that I realized is that Life is a Journey for me. and There really is no reason for me to get vain tattoos about the diverese Ideologies that I subscribe to at that given moment. Because Not only do I have NO IDEA if 5 years down the road I will Progress on and forget about the old Ideologies and develope new ones...But Also...I dont need a Permanete tatto to show these events.
Sometimes Tattoos could serve as Reminders and thats Why a part of me STILL wants to get tattoos. Right now I would like to get a Tattoo of Allah, and the Quran...However I reaslize that I dont need to go to that Extreme to develope a reminder. A simple Symbol on a Ring, or Neckless will do. or possibly a Braclet containg a verese of the QUran that is about Zakat. I could Easily take it off when nessesary and easily put it back on. Its BETTER than a Tattoo. (for me)
Not only that but there is this Girl who has a tattoo of a Virgin Mary on her back...and this guy at work told her...hey but what about if you are having sex with your boyfriend? wouldnt that feel a little weird and awkward?
Personnally, If I am with a girl (wife) and we are having sex...and shes got a religious tattoo on her back (a religion that I practice)...uh....I think that would probabily end the mood...lol I would imagine that I would feel really really akward and that tattoo would just be stareing at me the whole time...

Salaam, I guess tattoos for me are like photographs, memories of the past good & bad that will stay with me until I die. This is perhaps the reason why so many people get them. I already had lots pre-reversion & have always been really into them. My Islamic tattoos to me are showing my devotion to God weather or not anyone agrees with that or thinks it is wrong to show devotion in such a way. Either way what's done is done & I'll have to live with them as permanent scars, & display my sins. I don't really agree with some of the comments made that they are dirty. They're just ink under the skin & have never caused any infection which usually happens just after they've been done if the tattooist &/or his/her equipment are unclean.

Yeah, I'm at that tattoo stage. Where I want to get a tattoo for the simple reason of wanting a tattoo. I would never get a name. I'd never get something which symbolises my affliations at a particular time. I'd never get something purely for cute factor e.g. http//nbnl.globalwhelming.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/android-tattoo.jpg, never get anything in typeface or (solely) for aesthetics. It had to be something that seriously meant something to me and I don't really think that there IS anything worthy of branding your body with, even though I'd love to one day find something that meant enough.
For now though, I want a tattoo but I'm not going to make a hasty decision for something I'll probably hate the next day, knowing me.
Nothing against those people who find that special thing, but PLEASE, NO cherries (I don't care if they're dripping, it's not cool), NO Squids (WTH) and NO Hello Kitty (self-explanatory).
I wanted to get Peace in Arabic and/or Hebrew or simply the word 'live' in english. I also wanted a full sleve at one point, and I wanted some weird stuff on my feet. lol

I can't condone tattoos, and I'm not sure that they are haram or not, but almost immediately after i found out that the quran was the word of God, I took my Reformists Translation with me to a tattoo parlor and got my tattoo on the ankle
