The Importance of Hajj

There has been much discussion on hajj & what it is according to the quran. I think one thing that cannot be denied is that it is an extremely important aspect of he din. This being the case, has any effort being made to come to common understanding with the focus on actual implementation? Many people complain either that the hajj should not be in Makkah or that it should be in Makkah, but we are not allowed to practice it as it should be done or any of a number of different complaints regarding it. Is it not about time we begin to implement it?
With this in mind, I would like to ask any here who have an interpretation of what hajj is, to please email me their views as I would be very interested in drawing the commonality among the various views as a basis towards implementation.
